SAN DIEGO (AP) - Angered by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto this week of a bill to allow illegal immigrants to drive legally in California, Hispanic leaders and pro-immigrant groups are organizing protests and a national boycott of the state in their campaign to win the licenses.
Supporters of the bill, which was approved by the Democratic-controlled Legislature, said the Republican governor will pay a political price for reneging on promises to reach a compromise. They charge that Schwarzenegger belatedly added a demand that such licenses be specifically marked to differentiate them from licenses held by U.S. citizens and legal residents, a suggestion many said would encourage discrimination and persecution.
"If this is the posture the governor wants to take, then our community is going to be forced to kick it up a notch," said Nativo Lopez, president of the Mexican American Political Association and Hermandad Mexicana, based in Southern California.
Lopez, who led a one-day state boycott in December over the same issue, said he will organize a national boycott to drive convention business away from such popular destinations as San Diego, Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Francisco.

(just finishing filling the barf bucket) --- is this not amazing??? ILLEGAL, NON-U.S. CITIZENS, LAW BREAKERS, coming into this country and complaining because someone is making them obey the law?????
Why, how outrageous! What an infraction of their "illegal civil liberties"...where is the ACLU on this one ????
The inmates are truly running the crazy house now!
What a load of cr*p. They'll have to consume and pruchase commodities, or starve. Other states won't be so sympathetic to them as even CA is. Try heading over to the good 'ol south, and see how far that gets ya.
This is funny stuff. If they're illegals, ship 'em out anyway - go home.
Uh oh...lawns are going to go unmowed. And buy Produce futures!
What? Wetbacks will boycott California now? Let them swim to Hawaii or Alaska, if that's closer!
The blackmail begins and another cottage industry springs up.
I wonder who the jerky jesse jackson of the illegals is gong to be.
Boycott WHAT?! Social Services?????
Does this mean no more "for spanish press 1 - For english press 2" when I call a business? Please say it is so!!!
Imagine if 10 million Americans flooded into Mexico then demanded free health care, free education, drivers licenses and a full array of social benefits...
Are they threatening to not vote?
Great idea for a movie. Call it "Un Dia Sin Gringos." Or would it be "Un Dia Fuera Gringos?" Anyway it follows Jose and Julio as they sit on the median strip outside Home Depot waiting for work, wondering where all the gringos are. Surprise! They're all gone. Jose and Julio drink beer and smoke and at the end of the day head back to Mexico.
Yeah, boycott Emergency rooms for a month you leeches.
What part of illegal is it that these people don't understand.
Lord they are dumb. The hand waving talk a mile a minute crowd has never learned the anglo reaction pattern.
The last time they did this, the only ones who participated were the kids who gt a free day off of school (even though it cost the schools thousands -- but the state got to keep it).
John Kerry voted for giving drivers licenses to illegals before he voted against it.
Darn the bad luck!
Thats the sort of thing I routinely hear. Meanwhile, I live in Irvine and mow my own lawn. It takes less than 10 minutes with a push-mower because its so small. That includes sweeping, raking, picking up the clippings the works.
Also used to pick strawberries and tomatoes for summer jobs as a high-schooler (and even into my early 20s). Its not sexy work. Its tedious. It isnt fun. Your hands will be stained red for a month. But it isnt the end of the world either.
Bottom line is that there are a sufficient number of Stupid White People that have never done those things that think those jobs are horribly difficult to do theyre simply not.
Whatever. If theyre that dopey they deserve whatever they get.
Hispanics that have either legally immigrated and attained citizenship and those born here that attend school and work hard to advance their lives I have typically found to be against amnesty or issues like driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.
Those that travel here illegally or support those that do, those that refuse to learn our language or celebrate American festivities, typically line up to support amnesty and driver's licenses.
This isn't the united issue in the community some would have people believe.
I doubt Arnold is terribly worried. The majority of people threatening to boycott can't vote, given the small exception of voter fraud. They need to purchase American products to survive and they need to continue working to send money back to their families in Mexico. I'm glad he appears to be standing form on this issue.
Isn't that what they were trying to accomplish?
"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you
(Mexican Am.) can do for your (US) country".
If the illegals were given these DL's, could they then try to register to vote in California using motor-voter??
Maybe the illegals could start by boycotting CA and going back to whatever countries they came from -- ILLEGALLY.
Can we assume then that the ones who are there will all go back home?
Boycotts usually result in a backlash.
Legally you can only vote if a citizen, but polling spots typically will only ask for a driver's license to prove that citizenship. It would make it easier to pull off voter fraud, as well as scam all our federal programs. A driver's license is esstinally a national I.D. card that will gain you access to near anything in our system.
Arnold said from the beginning that he wanted the licenses to be clearly marked do indicate that the driver was NOT a citizen.
This was NOT a late addition. The Mecla group is out- right lying.
As a hispanic Californian may I say to these so-called leaders, "Go to Hell."
...and the right to vote
Let's hope he does and that our political "leaders" that have been ducking on this for so long then begin to face the truth and do something about the actual problems. There is no right to be here illegally; there is no right to vote here illegally. The great majority of Americans want something done about this ever-growing illegality and mostly, with few exceptions, what we have seen thus far by elected officials is ducking and avoidance.
So the criminals are going to protest, so what? When are the black thug demagogs going to get replaced by folks who realize that wetback criminals take jobs from unemployed youth in the black ghettos?
I say boycott all you want, just do it in Mexico.
I've been boycotting California for years.
Oh yes, no trip to Baja this year for me either.
Mexicans passing through the State of California can use their Mexican drivers licence for most normal identification needs. There is no reason for a foreign national to have a State identification document.
They're going home and not coming back? I just don't get it - what part of ILLEGAL do they NOT understand? (That goes for our elected officials as well!) I am tired of American citizens being used as patsies.
I hope they do. We'll see, once and for all, if the rhetoric of how much we need them is true.
The Mexican Brotherhood. Sounds like a nice pro American group.
By the way, could you boycott the entire USA while yer at it. This coupled with the massive exodus of libs after Nov. will be welcomed.
Does that mean that illegals will stop coming into CA from Mexico because of the boycott?
Proud Hispanic U.S Citizen, Republican. Got my 1976 Bi-Centennial Citizenship Certificate, U.S. passport, Genuine Flori-Da Broward County Drivers license. Voter's Reg. signed by Miram Oliphant. Ooops! Me and 575 friends put Dubya Over the Top in 2k. Play it again.... I support ID's particularly in California.
