Hispanics threaten California boycott over license bill veto

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Angered by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto this week of a bill to allow illegal immigrants to drive legally in California, Hispanic leaders and pro-immigrant groups are organizing protests and a national boycott of the state in their campaign to win the licenses.

Supporters of the bill, which was approved by the Democratic-controlled Legislature, said the Republican governor will pay a political price for reneging on promises to reach a compromise. They charge that Schwarzenegger belatedly added a demand that such licenses be specifically marked to differentiate them from licenses held by U.S. citizens and legal residents, a suggestion many said would encourage discrimination and persecution.

"If this is the posture the governor wants to take, then our community is going to be forced to kick it up a notch," said Nativo Lopez, president of the Mexican American Political Association and Hermandad Mexicana, based in Southern California.

Lopez, who led a one-day state boycott in December over the same issue, said he will organize a national boycott to drive convention business away from such popular destinations as San Diego, Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Francisco.

Uh oh...lawns are going to go unmowed. And buy Produce futures!

That’s the sort of thing I routinely hear. Meanwhile, I live in Irvine and mow my own lawn. It takes less than 10 minutes with a push-mower because it’s so small. That includes sweeping, raking, picking up the clippings – the works.

Also used to pick strawberries and tomatoes for summer jobs as a high-schooler (and even into my early 20’s). It’s not “sexy” work. It’s tedious. It isn’t fun. Your hands will be stained red for a month. But it isn’t the end of the world either.

Bottom line is that there are a sufficient number of Stupid White People that have never done those things that think those jobs are horribly difficult to do – they’re simply not.

Whatever. If they’re that dopey they deserve whatever they get.

Hispanics that have either legally immigrated and attained citizenship and those born here that attend school and work hard to advance their lives I have typically found to be against amnesty or issues like driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.

Those that travel here illegally or support those that do, those that refuse to learn our language or celebrate American festivities, typically line up to support amnesty and driver's licenses.

This isn't the united issue in the community some would have people believe.

I doubt Arnold is terribly worried. The majority of people threatening to boycott can't vote, given the small exception of voter fraud. They need to purchase American products to survive and they need to continue working to send money back to their families in Mexico. I'm glad he appears to be standing form on this issue.

Self-centered attitude.

"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you
(Mexican Am.) can do for your (US) country".

If the illegals were given these DL's, could they then try to register to vote in California using motor-voter??

Hispanics threaten California boycott over license bill veto

If only...

Maybe the illegals could start by boycotting CA and going back to whatever countries they came from -- ILLEGALLY.

What exactly is a "national boycott of the state"?

Can we assume then that the ones who are there will all go back home?

It's funny as hell to drive by a Texas or Californian construction site and yell out the window "La Migra" (immigration!) as loudly as you can.

Watch 'em haul ass out the back door and across the yard.

Good maybe they can leave! Shame though the spray paint graffiti is a nice touch and the Third world look of sections of LA will be a nice reminder of their passing.

I want the federal government to enforce existing immigration laws now. The proposals of amnesty that are circulating only encourage more illegals to surface here. Either follow the process for legal entry or be deported. It's that simple.

Boycotts usually result in a backlash.

Legally you can only vote if a citizen, but polling spots typically will only ask for a driver's license to prove that citizenship. It would make it easier to pull off voter fraud, as well as scam all our federal programs. A driver's license is esstinally a national I.D. card that will gain you access to near anything in our system.

Arnold said from the beginning that he wanted the licenses to be clearly marked do indicate that the driver was NOT a citizen.

This was NOT a late addition. The Mecla group is out- right lying.

Let's hope he does and that our political "leaders" that have been ducking on this for so long then begin to face the truth and do something about the actual problems. There is no right to be here illegally; there is no right to vote here illegally. The great majority of Americans want something done about this ever-growing illegality and mostly, with few exceptions, what we have seen thus far by elected officials is ducking and avoidance.

So, maybe they'll spend some of that money in the US rather than sending it back to Mejico. Great! Of course, El Presidedente Fox don want no dollars to stay in the US because that hurts his cut.

So the criminals are going to protest, so what? When are the black thug demagogs going to get replaced by folks who realize that wetback criminals take jobs from unemployed youth in the black ghettos?
