Reagan's opening remarks are a rebuttal to Mondale's accusations against Central America.

Interesting about that: Reagan won a landslide re-election after opening his first debate against a challenger by having to apologize.

Reagan completely on the defensive since the starting bell.

Mondale stumbling through a question that Kerry will have to face: "After calling the Russians an untrustworthy and unnegotiable adversary, how would you as President believe that you would be better in negotiating with them?"

Mondale talks about how we're not safer because 'there are 2000 more nuclear weapons pointed at us now than in 1980, and Reagan has done nothing on arms reduction with the Soviets' and that only a strategy of accords and agreements will remedy this.

We all know how that turned out, don't we?

How could Kerry use a likewise defensive response of Mondale's when talking about Al-Qaeda? There's no-one to negotiate with!

Reagan just listed off everything Mondale opposed concerning the military.

Now Reagan talks about all the military programs that Mondale voted to cut, and how he voted against military actions and upkeep.

Mondale retorts by calling the F-14 a 'waste of money' that wasn't 'flying the way it was supposed to'. Hah! The F-14 was probably the finest plane the military ever had.

Wow. I was 6 or 7 years old when this aired. This is the first time I've ever seen this debate.

Mondale sounds just like Kerry! And Reagan and G.W. sound so much alike. Twenty years later and some things never change.

Though Mondale does appear a little more emotional stable than Kerry does today.

Mondale could've hit Reagan hard on the Lebanon stuff, but didn't do much with it. Odd.

This is so interesting. Mondale sounds just like Kerry. "I am strong on defense!" And Reagan isn't doing it "right".

Now talking about how Reagan "emboldened" terrorists.

My word, the Demos always ARE on the wrong side of history.

Isn't videotape wonderful. Mondale citicizing our liberation of Central America as an evil use of our strength.

Nicaragua has been a functioning democracy for what--10-12 years? If Mondale had been elected it would be another Cuba today.

I miss him terribly.

Unfortunately, because of very young age, I never got interested in politics until well after he left the public eye, so I never saw vintage Reagan. These old videos show me just how dedicated this man was to his principles and his country. Reagan was a patriot, and somewhere, he is still similing on the land in which he believed so much.

My only regret is that I never got to see him in action. He was a true leader and he never made things boring. I bet he was the kind of person you could have sat down with and had one hell of a fun and entertaining conversation with. You are very lucky to have lived 8 years under his leadership (I only lived about about 3).

"It's amazing, the press is sounding just as hostile talking to Reagan as they do to Bush"

It's been going on since Nixon. They felt the same way about Eisenhower ("a do-nothing, golf-playing dunce")
but would never have had the bad form to address the general so disrespectfully. Life was different in the fifties.

Back then I don't think anyone was sure how to deal with them. But the fact that the debate does deal with terrorism & what Mondale's voting record was like I think it could really put flipper in perspective.

At least it could show that he is like Mondale was except in the respect that Mondale at least had the brass to stand by his loony positions.

It seems like about a year ago, when the Gipper was still alive, Kerry was boasting about how he stood up to Reagan in Central America. Does anyone recall the precise Kerry quote? Kerry dropped that strategy when he realized it was another loser. It seems like he would get tired of always being wrong.

Mondale referencing Strobe Talbott to argue with Reagan about what Reagan did!! Like Tom Brokaw telling Prime Minister Allawi what is happening in Iraq!

Mondale uttered the mantra "arms control agreement..." as a measure of presidential success. Looks antiquated now, just twenty years later. History has really moved fast since this debate.

Watching this debate I've come to the conclusion the pundits are wrong to debate whether debates should continue. These debates stand as historical record. They evidence the two party ideologies and history bares out whom was right.

OMG!! Mondale was called a flip flopper?

the press is sounding just as hostile talking to Reagan as they do to Bush.

IMO, the press was worse to Reagan.

So many conservatives have forgotten (or are too young to remember) how Reagan was constantly sneered at, treated like dirt, blamed for EVERYTHING (homelessness, poverty, racism, "creating a climate of" hate, fear, evil, etc), and lied about incessantly. And there was no "new media" then. He didn't worry about it.
