New information released by Secretary of State Kevin Shelley's office Tuesday shows that consultants paid with federal election funds served as his staff at Democratic political events, including a Sacramento lunch that raised money for presidential candidate John Kerry and a fund-raiser for Assembly Democrats. "Staff activity reports" released to The Bee and other newspapers under the state's Public Records Act show that several of the consultants recorded whom Shelley met at events he attended, introduced him to people and kept track of his activities.
In a report on one of the more blatantly partisan events, consultant Jason Vega wrote that he went with Shelley to a Kerry fund-raiser at the Sacramento home of Eleni Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis. She's the daughter of millionaire developer Angelo Tsakopoulos, one of the biggest financial contributors to Democratic candidates in the country. While at the event, according to Vega's report, Shelley spoke individually with more than two dozen prominent Democrats and two people - Julie Sandino and Dan Weitzman - who have raised money for past Shelley campaigns.
"It doesn't look good," said Tony Miller, special counsel to Shelley, a San Francisco Democrat. "It is hard to justify when you see something like this submitted."
In another instance, Vega filed a "staff activity report" describing his attendance at a Sunday meeting of the California delegation to the Democratic National Convention. He wrote that he was there "to represent the SOS" (secretary of state) and confirm Shelley's status as a delegate for Kerry.

Apparently, liberals have no problem violating the law in the furtherance of their socialist dreams.
What is a California Secretary of State?
I thought Colin Powell was SOS and dealt with foreign affairs.
California's Secretary of State is a guy by the name of Kevin Shelley, who apparently has spent a great deal of time defrauding the people of California. Just do a Google News Search for "Kevin Shelley" and you'll learn more about him.
This is actually scandal number 3 for him this year...
If you're asking about the position, every state has one as far as I know. If you'll recall the 2000 election debacle in Florida, now-Congresswoman Katherine Harris was the Secretary of State for Florida and was tasked by law to certify the election results.
That's what makes what's going on in CA so despicable because this guy has such an important responsibility with regard to elections...
You'd think this would be something that'd catch national attention.
Oh, wait a minute, for a moment there I was visiting a delightful place where truth is actually relevant.
My mistake.
Oh oh........this spells trouble for the Dems,in a big way.
I'd like to think so but then where's the outrage?
What if this had been a Republican SOS using federal funds for partisan purposes? Is there any doubt in anybody's mind that the mainstream media wouldn't jump all over it like a band of hungry hyenas???
I only found out about it by going to the CA GOP website and then researching the claims on Google. And that's only because I foolishly thought for a few fleeting moments that with Kerry being such a fraud and with CA having a Republican Governator, that there might...just might be a teensy, weensy chance that GWB could carry California.
But then we must always remember that Dems will go all out and do anything they possibly can to ensure a Kerry victory...even if it means resurrecting dead voters or creating them from scratch...
And welcome to FR! :-)
So then why isn't this discussed in the major media? Why don't I see or hear anything on Fox News? MSNBC? CNN? (Okay, that last one was a joke).
But still, California has 55 electoral votes and it seems pretty clear to me that the CA Sec of State wanted to ensure that CA's Republican governor would not help deliver the state to Bush
