OAKLAND, Calif. The Oakland Police Department has halted its use of D-U-I checkpoints after the city's Hispanic leaders complained that the roadblocks were ensnaring too many illegal immigrants.

D-U-I checkpoints allow police officers to demand drivers' licenses and proof of insurance. City leaders agree the roadblocks are an effective way to get drunken drivers off the streets.

But Hispanic community leaders and City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente complained that the checkpoints were making life miserable for illegal immigrants who aren't licensed to drive but otherwise obey the law.

Police Chief Richard Word has ordered a month-long moratorium on the checkpoints while the department drafts new guidelines.

But City Councilmember Larry Reid says stopping the D-U-I checkpoints threatens public safety.

I'd be r-e-a-l careful about using that word that sounds sort of like another word that is "hate speech" unless uttered in a rap song or under similar circumstances. Remember the poor DC employee who lost his job for telling his staff that they would have to be more "niggardly" in dispensing city aid to the poor.

Your comments made me snigger.

Good ol' Mayor MoonBeam! And if he gets elected AG in '06, he'll probably free all the illegals in prison too if he had his way.

But the checks also have ensnared dozens of illegal immigrants who are not licensed to drive yet otherwise obey the law.

First of all, if I lived in Oakland I'd probably be drawn to the bottle as well.

Seriously, isn't this, in fact, a reason to expand the checkpoints and dualize their purpose? If this is proven an effective tool to get illegal aliens out of the country, and California is suffering from paralyzing budget woes, why not get the INS involved and broaden and coordinate this effort?

Seems like common sense, but then what do I know?

It shouldn't take long to find out that answer.

What a disgusting display by MoonBeam and his city to allow this to happen. What in God's good name are they thinking?

And I thought I heard something about him running for Governor. Didn't he see how much voters liked illegals when they kicked Davis out?

He's gearing up for a run at AG in '06 is what I heard.

Rats are impervious to nothing short of a 2x4 to the forehead. and many blows may be necessary.

The recall was just a start, even if it was hijacked by the same types of folks that backed Davi$ for the most part.

This state is ripe for reform,,

The question is will it be watered down to make it more easily imposed and accomplishing as little as possible as it currently appears to be the case, imo, or will it stem the tide of socialism and its agenda being enacted here by shattering the behind the scenes power players hold on this state's political machinery..

Only the special interests and their agents of "change" know for sure. We are left to run the gauntlet here daily to seek a more balanced and rational approach to governance, accomplished not by killing the golden goose, ie; business, but rather nurturing it.

To those who say Arnie is doing just that, I say, Oh, really?

This November, this state has to make a tough decision,, who can best govern, socialist incumbents and those who lay claim to being conservative yet perpetuated a plunge into debt at the taxpayers and future esidents expnxe, or true conservatives who recognize the need to stop the insanity that has gone on in this state too long.
