Pols vow to revive gun ban Taking on assault rifles
BY AMY SACKS and CRISTINA SILVA DAILY NEWS WRITERS
Local lawmakers pledged yesterday to work to reinstate the recently expired ban on assault weapons.
U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer said he hasn't given up trying to renew the ban, which fell by the wayside two weeks ago.
"Not continuing the ban on assault weapons is one of the great disgraces this year," Schumer (D-N.Y.) said, promising that members of Congress will take up the cause during its next session.
A story in yesterday's Daily News showed how the once-banned weapons can pierce through concrete and even some bulletproof vests.
And some law enforcement officials fear the powerful guns, once used to guard drug dens during the height of the crack epidemic, could make their way back into New York City.
"The Daily News talked about people having AR-15s," Schumer said. "Nobody needs an AR-15. These were designed as weapons of war. ... They should be abolished."
Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly aggressively lobbied to keep the 10-year-old ban in place.
Earlier this month, the Republican mayor took the unusual step of taking President Bush to task for his inaction.
"I think every congressman and every senator has a responsibility to stand up," Bloomberg told reporters. "And I think the President can do more."
Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens, Brooklyn) accused the President of cozying up to the National Rifle Association.
"Every police organization and even Commissioner Kelly said these will make the streets less safe," Weiner said. "In the showdown between the NRA and the overwhelming majority of the population and police officials, President Bush chose the NRA."
Hey , Chuck... that's why they're criminals.... they don't obey the law. a-hole!
If you can't support the second amendment, you can't get my vote.
Bring it on, Chuckie.
Clinton's 1994 AWB is what caused the Republican Congressional takeover of 1994.
We would love to have an excuse to make you have to find a real job next time you are up for election.
Gee, you mean like ice picks?
If anyone wants one. Now is the best time to get one.
I have yet to see a 223 round pierce concrete. Unless you are talking about that concrete backer board you put down before laying tile. I can punch holes in that all day long.
What are they pissing and moaning about? NY's ban is still in effect.
So was the Brown Bess muzzle loader. And, I bought my AR-15 while the ban was in effect. Schumer, like all liberals, is a lying pos.
---If anyone wants one. Now is the best time to get one.---
Consider it the Chucky Schumer memorial assault rifle!

hehe you should see what a 300WSM can do to a Kevlar helmet :) (they did it once on tactical to practical on hist channel) Thank goodness RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE LIKE FREEPERS USE THEM FOR HUNTING ANIMALS (and tasty animals at that) AND NOT PEOPLE. Guess Id better hurry and get my folding stock and bayonet for my cetme before they are illegal again
Molon Labe, chuckie
We the People have spoken when the ban faded in the sunset. Give it up, a-hole.
Thank you very much.
Yep, and if you have a post-ban, now is the time to upgrade. You can buy an upper with the nasty features (flash hider and bayonet mount) and get a folding stock. Buy plenty of hi-cap mags, too. Bushmaster has plenty of stock and the delivery time on these items by UPS ground was under 10 days (they assemble to order so it takes a day or two to get your upper built). Speaking from recent experience;)
The Top 10 Reasons The Clinton Gun Ban Should Expire
The federal "assault weapon" ban championed by Bill Clinton expires September 13. Here are the top 10 reasons why it should expire and never should have been imposed in the first place.
Number 10: The ban was never intended to reduce crime.
In 1988, an anti-gun group invented "assault weapons" as a "new issue" to "reinvigorate the [defunct] handgun restriction lobby." Now, the "issue" is being used to pave the way for bans on other guns. Sens. John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, and Dianne Feinstein co-sponsor S.1431, a bill to ban--as "assault weapons"--every semi-automatic shotgun and semi-automatic detachable-magazine rifle, the majority of which are widely used by sportsmen. Another provision in the bill would ban semi-automatic rifles and shotguns designed for defensive purposes. In some states, anti-gunners now propose banning pump-action rifles and shotguns as "assault weapons."
Number 9: The shape of a gun`s grip is not a reason to ban it.
Modern rifle and shotgun grips are shaped as they are for the same reason that hammers, scissors, computer mouses, and other products are made with contours and curves--to conform to the shape of a person`s hand and wrist. All pistols have "pistol grips," after all, and no one claims that they should be banned because of the grips` shape. Custom-made guns have had stocks tailored to the physiques of their owners for centuries.
Number 8: The claim that the guns are "high-powered" is a lie.
Rifles used for hunting dangerous and other large game are quite powerful, for good reason. However, so called "assault weapons" are much less powerful than many rifles used for hunting.
Number 7: The guns are not machine guns or "weapons of war."
Machine guns have been heavily restricted since 1934. The "assault weapon" ban deals instead with semi automatic firearms, which fire only one shot when the trigger is pulled. They do not "spray-fire" multiple rounds. They are not used by military forces. For the record, though, throughout history Americans have owned the same firearms the military has used.
Number 6: Some of the guns are widely used for sports and hunting.
The Colt AR-15 and Springfield M1A are the center-fire rifles most often used for marksmanship competitions in America. The utility of a rifle for hunting is largely a question of the ammunition it uses, and many banned rifles use hunting-caliber ammunition.
Number 5: Gun control supporters lie about police officers.
The radical Violence Policy Center`s (VPC) claim concerning the percentage of police officers killed with "assault weapons" is false. VPC inflates its count of such crimes by deceitfully counting guns not defined as "assault weapons" under federal law.
Number 4: The ban has had no effect on crime.
The BATFE says it "can in no way vouch for the validity" of Brady Campaign`s claim that the ban is responsible for violent crime`s decline. Even the VPC says "you can`t argue with a straight face that the ban has been effective," and scoffs at Brady`s attempts to prevent it from expiring.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studied the "assault weapon" ban and other gun control schemes, and found "insufficient evidence to determine the effectiveness of any of the firearms laws reviewed for preventing violence."
Number 3: The guns have never been criminals` "weapon of choice."
A recent study directed and approved by the National Institute of Justice, state police reports, local police department reports, state Department of Justice reports, federal Department of Justice felon surveys and crime victim surveys, and a Congressional Research Service report show that the guns have never been used in more than about 1-2% of violent crime. The study Congress required of the ban found, "the banned weapons and magazines were never used in more than a modest fraction of all gun murders." More than 20 times as many murders have been committed each year with knives, bare hands or clubs. The fact is that firearms of all types are used in only one out of four violent crimes.
Number 2: More guns equal less crime.
Violent crime in the U.S. has declined 12 straight years, 35% overall, and is at a 27-year low. Murder rates are the lowest they have been since the mid-1960s. At the same time, the number of privately-owned firearms--including "assault weapons"--rises by 5 million a year. There are more Right-to-Carry states (38) than ever. Many states have passed laws eliminating local gun control ordinances, and many states` waiting periods and purchase permit requirements have been eliminated in favor of the National Instant Check.
Number 1: The ban interferes with the right of self-defense.
It bans guns and magazines that are useful for defensive purposes. The Brady Campaign says self-defense is "not a federally guaranteed constitutional right" and "the only reason for guns in civilian hands is for sporting purposes." However, the U.S. Constitution, the constitutions of 44 states, and the overwhelming majority of Americans recognize the right to use firearms to defend themselves and their families.
----
Clinton gun ban supporters argue that because criminals and madmen use these firearms to commit some crimes, honest citizens must surrender them. Banning guns because criminals use them is telling the law-abiding that their rights and liberties depend not on their own conduct but on the behavior of the lawless. It tells honest citizens that they have only such rights and liberties as criminals will allow.

Thanks for the laugh! Talk about lies and propaganda.
BTW, their "concrete" in the article is a cinderblock, hardly the same thing. I can break a cinderblock by dropping it on another cinderblock.
Bring it on.
Let's make it Dems number one issue.
If they thought 1994 was bad, just wait.
They're referring to the utterly fraudulent report on the subject aired by NBC Nightly News a while back, where they showed a .223 AR-15 demolishing a cinder block while a Remington .223 went "plink!"
The Goebells-inspired national media strikes again...
Astonishing that none of the 2nd Amendment points of view got into the article.
Prominant Jews against Guns....dumb...very dumb to trust the "state" to protect them....you'd think they'd have learned.
You know, my buddies and I went down to the range with some concrete and an assault weapon.
The assault weapon just crumbled the concrete, it was frighteining!
But then we unscrewed the flash hider and unbolted the bayonet lug and the thing just bounced off the concrete without crumbling it at all.
Schumer is so wise to protect us from these instruments of concrete destruction.
By the way we used limited capacity magazines to hold our two inch long bullets.
They know what's best for you, even if you live somewhere else.
Can we somehow get this article reprinted in newspapers in places like Tennessee, West Virginia, Arkansas and Missouri?
That's NOT how the DIMS think amigo. The will of the PEOPLE means NOTHING to them. It is what THEY, the ELITE, the INTELLIGENTCIA, THINK! PERIOD.
That is why the American people will continue to slap them down.
"Prominant Jews against Guns....dumb...very dumb to trust the "state" to protect them....you'd think they'd have learned."
Not all of us are so prominant as Scumbag Schumer or Feinswein, but neither do we let the idocy of hoplophobia infect our minds. Check out this site, where Jews are more sensible concerning guns: http://www.jpfo.org/
Yes, history teaches that society is much better protected when only the government and police have these weapons of war.
Great to see that Chuck Schumer is a student of history.
More guns in hands of responsible citizens... less crime
Less guns in hands of responsible citizens... more crime.
"Pleeeease don' fling me in dat br'ar patch!"
H***, most ammo above a .22cal will do such. Duh!
Wonder what Senator Schumer thinks about the 1938 Nazi "Regulations Against Jews' Possession of Weapons." (11 Nov 1938)
I am sick and tired of being inconvenienced because what has be caused by criminals. Just a couple of nights ago to people were killed in a house fire, because they could not escape because of the burglar bars over the windows. I know people who cannot sit on their own front porch with out fear. The police cannot "Protect and serve". They serve and do paperwork after the fact. The public must be given more encouragement and legal means of protecting itself. The criminal element should not be able to sue law abiding people who try to protect themselves and property.
AR-15s and their full-auto brothers in the M-16 family were designed for hunting. The quarry isn't Bambi; rather, it is Homo Tyrannicus, some examples of which were described quite vividly in the Declaration of Independence and other writings of the Founding Fathers. Said beast has lived in every part of the world in every era of history, and despite the best efforts of millions of hunters, it has - regretfully - escaped extinction.
Chucky DOES understand that relationship. That is WHY he wants fewer guns in the hands of law abiding citizens. He WANTS you to be dependent.
Can you post a link to the article you posted. I need to send this to my mom, an avowed pacifist, whom I'm trying to convince of the silliness of the ban.
bump
Oh I know....I support JPFO wholeheartedly and now that you've brought it up...maybe I ought to send a donation or buy something.
I bet there is an urban thing about this. You think Bloomberg or Chuckie do much hunting or range time?
But I bet Bloomie has security....him being a "big people" and all.
Thanks for the link....I was looking for it the other day....I was also looking for that banner that has a Star of David, Regular Cross and Orthodox Cross flying side by side and the verbage was something about standing up to the Islamists(?)...ring a bell?
Even most dims in Congress probably rolled their eyes at this one. They would rather keep their jobs than join that losing fight.
The Second Amendment is not about hunting.
That's what I questioned too. If New York does not have a ban on these guns, why not? If they do, leave the rest of the country out of it. This should not be a federal issue.
I had been wishy-washing about the gun control laws until the drug gangs started shooting it out in back of my home.
In a real-time situation, you are better off calling out for pizza rather than dialing 911 for two reasons: 1. You will get a faster response; 2. At least you will get something that will satisfy you.
I am thinking that the Swiss have the right idea. Every household is issued a fully automatic machine gun. Amazing how their crime rate is so low!
Schumer is one of the founding members of the Firearms Flat Earth Society. I used to think he was only stupid, but now I think he knows exactly what the truth is, and he is an outright liar and traitor. You have to wonder what the ulterior motives are for someone who works so hard to deceive and disarm the citizenry.
I see they have a link about the battle of Athens Tennessee....a great story of armed citizenry throwing out the trash.
And a story a lot of pols fear BIG TIME.
I'm joining today.
I know, but the gun-grabbers are immune to common sense and ridicule. And apparently immune to prosecution and term limits.
What is worrisome is that when Congress did not re-new the ban, it was NOT because they believed it to be unconstitutional, but because it was a political decision in an election year.
And it will be a political decision when a ban is put back on the front burner.
I'm absolutely certain a ban of sorts will be used as a killer amendment over and over on any Bill the Dems do not want to be passed. The Defense of Marriage Bill (if there is one coming up) will be their first attempted use of it, even though there is nothing germain in an AWB amendment to warrant the attachment.
The only counter we have for that would be to sponsor a Bill that would rescind ALL gun laws.
1. In 1961 the cry was "We don't want to take your guns away, we only want to register HANDGUNS. Rifles and shotguns will not be affected. And we want to ban the import of 5 shot bolt action army surplus rifles because they compete with American made hunting rifles.
2. In 1964 the cry was,"We want to ban the evil army surplus rifles and "saturday night specials"and register ALL handguns and long guns.
3.1n 1968 the 1968 gun control act was passed which banned the import of Army surplus rifles and handguns and low cost small foreign made handguns.
"Today we make America safe by taking the guns out of the hands of criminals."...Lyndon B. Johnson said signing the bill.
4.1972. "We want to ban 'Saturday Night Specials only'. Rifles, shotguns and large handguns will not be affected!"
5. 1976. "We want to ban ALL handguns. Rifles and shotguns will not be affected."
6.1981. America is awash in semi-auto assault rifles. The cry from what became Handgun Control Inc. was "We only want to control handguns. Long guns will not be affected."
The day after Reagan was shot Actress Lee Grant was on Good Morning America and proclaimed, "The NRA is a RIFLE organization! They should give up their handguns and they can keep their rifles!"
7. 1988. The anti-gun media begins a campaign to ban handguns and military style RIFLES and large capacity SHOTGUNS. "We only want to ban ASSAULT RIFLES and ASSAULT SHOTGUNS. Regular rifles will not be affected."
8.2001. "We want to ban .50 rifles. Regular style hunting rifles and shotguns will not be affected.
They lied to us in '61.
They lied to us in '64.
They lied to us in '68.
They lied to us in '72, '76 and '81 and 2001.
They are lying to you now.
Hey Chuckie. Molon Labe you motherf*cker.
Note to Chuckes the Cereal Killer:
The second Amendment is NOT about Hunting.
