John Kerry flubs Good Morning America

GMA

John Kerry was apparently on Good Morning America and The Note snippets this baffling exchange:

DIANE SAWYER: Was the war in Iraq worth it?

JOHN KERRY: We should not have gone to war knowing the information that we know today.

DS: So it was not worth it.

JK: We should not — it depends on the outcome ultimately — and that depends on the leadership. And we need better leadership to get the job done successfully, but I would not have gone to war knowing that there was no imminent threat — there were no weapons of mass destruction — there was no connection of Al Qaeda — to Saddam Hussein! The president misled the American people — plain and simple. Bottom line.

DS: So if it turns out okay, it was worth it?

JK: No.

DS: But right now it wasn't?p>

JK: It was a mistake to do what he did, but we have to succeed now that we've done what he's — I mean look — we have to succeed. But was it worth — as you asked the question — $200 billion and taking the focus off of Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda? That's the question. The test of the presidency was whether or not you should have gone to war to get rid of him. I think, had the inspectors continued, had we done other things — there were plenty of ways to keep the pressure on Saddam Hussein.

DS: But no way to get rid of him.

JK: Oh, sure there were. Oh, yes there were. Absolutely.

DS: So you're saying that today, even if Saddam Hussein were in power today it would be a better thing — you would prefer that . . .

JK: No, I would not prefer that. And Diane — don't twist here. Notice how Kerry loses his cool and accuses the questioner of twisting; Is this guy thin-skinned or what?

In tomorrow's debate, Kerry will benefit from lowered expectations because his image among voters is something of a caricature right now. But he still has to do better than he did on GMA. You can bet President Bush has a list of zingers that he will deploy if Kerry gives him an opening. Posted by PoliPundit at 10:09 am Link to this post | Comments (21)

Kerry is still lying that there were no connections between Al Qaeda and Iraq.

He must not have read the Senate Intelligence Committee Report or the 9/11 Commission Report, both of which cited the many connections between Iraq and AQ.

A high ranking Iraqi fedayeen soldier attended at least one pre planning 9/11 meeting with AQ.

Saddam knew 9/11 was coming and where we were going to be hit.

Even the Clinton Justice Department was able to obtain an indictment against OBL which cited the terrorist's ties to Iraq.

A federal judge has granted two 9/11 families a multi-million dollar judgement - against Iraq.

During the 90's, the mainstream press wrote about the world's alarm at the growing relationship between Saddam and Osama bin Laden. Old Media thinks we can't look these things up.

Hundreds of articles and links in this thread.

I hope Bushs aids are taking notes....all they have to do to get Kerry riled and showing his temper is to continue telling the truth about this....Kerry would prefer Saddam Hussein still be in power....that's what he is saying...he will self destruct!!!

I hate when he makes it about money... The lives of my children are priceless. If he wants to hang that 200 billion dollar price tag on his own kids then he needs to say that ... don't include me... I spent 22 years on active duty fighting for this country and its freedoms and I'll be damned if someone is going to associate a monetary value to Freedom. Let Beslan Russia serve as a cruel reminder of exactly what is at stake in this war. If we will not fight the terrorists in the streets of IRAQ than we will be forced to fight them in the School Yards of America. The President needs to tell John Kerry that the true statesman, in speaking of Freedom and Liberty (John F Kennedy) the real JFK once said "We must bear any burden and pay any price"... and John Kerry is no JFK if he is going to put a dollar sign on FREEDOM and LIBERTY.

It's not Diane who is twisted up like a pretzel telling to explain it. We all really want to understand your position. All we get is a 'yes' in one sentence, then a flip to a 'no' in the next, followed by an 'it depends'. There are 5 flips in this short exchange alone.

Did anyone else see this interview? Diane Sawyer held up large color pictures of Kerry windsurfing and snowboarding and asked him how he felt it compared to pictures she held up of W clearing brush on the ranch. He said "well, I've done that too, but they didn't take pictures of it." It was hilarious.

Then she said that windsurfing and snowboarding weren't activities the typical American to relate to, and he said it wasn't true, that the guys who go with him are carpenters and electricians. I'd love to know whether or not this is true.

She was not being adversarial. She was actually trying to help him. She gave him every opportunity to take a firm stand and he just kept going wobbly. She was lobbing him softballs and he was swinging and missing. She sounded adversarial because she couldn't get him to connect with her softball pitches.

Kerry can't be helped.

Well Yaaaawn, your pessimistic hate campaign comes down to 90 minutes. You either win the debate or you and your Party/beliefs are relegated to the trash heap of historic losers. This is it and there are no do overs just like your silly Convention. You have to sell yourself as a regular guy who is not a pompous, egotistical, self absorbed elitist. Apparently, your face got wind burned from taking that final nuance on the war. Now you have nothing to offer as far as record or economy so all you have left is to fool enough voters with your empty cliches.

The Yaaaawn Tax & Kerry campaign has decided to throw dice on Iraq and hope for more dead soldiers. Witness the desperation that is left of this sinking Garbage Scow. If Yaaawn asks the people if they are better off than 4 years ago, he is terrified of the answer. If the people vote their pocketbook he is toast. Most voters know their after tax income is as good as it has been.

In his obsession to bash the President, the challenger decided he had to insult the very leader that an independent Iraq chose to run their country in the interim. Alawi was not the leader we would have preferred but was the Prime Minister they chose freely. How unstatesmanlike can you be?? This the guy who says he is the superior diplomat? In what way, by insulting and degrading all our allies sacrifices??

He has pretty much torpedoed the worst economy since the Great Depression line. It is really hard to sell that line when it is the fastest growing economy in the world. All of his midget buddies in Europe would die to have our 3.5-4% growth rate or 5.4% unemployment. Now this is not the 30-35% growth that Iraq is expected to have this year but it is still the envy of the world. This in spite of GW inheriting a recession when he took office!

The economy has never been so robust as it has over the past 12 months thanks to the steady leadership of George W Bush. Being in the housing industry over the past 15 years the average housing starts has been around 1.4 million starts nationwide. During the BJ and the Witch’s years they went to an unheard 1.6 million. They have been pegged at 2 million over the past 12 months which is the Dodge Hemi of the economy. The combination of low interest rates, tax-cuts and more jobs than any other time in history has made home ownership grow at unheard of rates. This is why they have been forced to crying about every car bomb or kidnaping in Iraq.

Now Yaaawn comes down to the biggest 90 minutes in his disgraceful history. After President Bush places his Tony Lamas where the tanning booth doesn’t shine, Cambridge will be the only Battleground left. He knows that the Rat Party is not kind to it’s losers, ask Albore if you can get into his rubber room and unmask his muzzle. He has to convince women that apologizing to terrorists and serving them subpoenas is going to make them safer?? He has to convince America that leaving Iraq is a better idea than finishing the job. Finally, he has to convince America that they want him & Dingbat in their homes over the next 4-8 years. That would bankrupt Sominex!

Otherwise, he and his Party are all losers (is this line filled with redundancy?). This would make 6 elections in a row that they have gotten blown-out since Newt Gingrich’s Contract With America. They had the White House for 2 elections but only received 42 and 48% of the vote while losing Congress? If he doesn’t win on Thursday he and his party will be 0-6 and as relevant as Gorbachev and Carter. So Yaaaawn the Demosaur has to pull the wagon full of screaming kids through the tar pits knowing the sabers are out of their scabbards. There’s still a spot left for one more failed Party on the ash heap.

Pray for W and Our Troops

He strikes me as either being disingenuous or indecisive.

He has to straddle. Half of his base wants to win the war in Iraq; the other half wants us to get out immediately (or never to have gone in in the first place).

So, in every interview he has to say "well, we didn't go about it the right way" an d "no, knowing what we know now, we should not have gone in."

See? He says two different things in every interview. He will do that tomorrow night, too. Guaranteed. And it will finish him off.

Kerry and his surrogates keep using that $200 billion figure. There was a discussion of this recently, probably on FNC, that concluded that $120 billion is about what the war in Iraq has cost us so far.

DS: So the president was wrong to go to war with Iraq?

JK: I didn’t say that, you said that. But yes, the president was wrong in his decision to not refrain from leading us into a war which I supported in theory threatening to wage, but not actually waging at that time. Sometime? Maybe, but the real issue here is health care and the fact that this president - was it wrong? I guess history will decide, as it did regarding our country's involvement in Vietnam in which I served two tours of duty, but yes it was wrong knowing what we know today which we didn’t know then but I think when the American people look to a leader, and there’s not one today, when they look I think they’ll agree with me that it was more likely wrong than right and right is what we need to be before we make the wrong decision which I supported but not at that time which wasn’t the right time to do it though it may have been given what we knew then. I’ve been consistent in many ways in this position.
