We need tv and radio ads. Something like "14 Democrats have co-sponsored a bill to reinstate the draft. Republicans in Congress and President Bush have vowed to fight this bill. Why won't John Kerry condemn this bill and promise not to reinstate the draft if he is elected?"
Make them region specific, so in Florida, for example, change it to "14 Democrats including Corrine Brown and Alcie Hastings have co-sponsored a bill to ..."
Maybe end it with - "Call John Kerry and urge him that we don't need a draft. Ask John Kerry to convince his democrat friends who co-sponsored this bill that we don't need a draft."

We should be on the offensive and not the defensive on this issue. If they frame it, which they are doing, it may be too late. Spend a few million on radio and tv ads that is targeted to college students and their parents."

It's the Democrats who WANT THE DRAFT!!

Absolutely- they are hoping to divide the country just the way they did during the Vietnam war. It's so blatant- and so typical for them to project their own base behaviour on the Right.

I hate to say "I told you so," but I raised these scam e-mails on the supposed return of the draft as a potential problem months ago (May 17, 2004, to be exact):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1137275/posts

That was the first time the phony e-mails hit my firm, and some of our women employees in particular were running around like Chicken Little saying the sky was falling. It was obvious from clues in the "send to" box that this was sent out by local DemocRAT activists, but the local Rats aren't bright enough to figure out how to start such a rumor campaign themselves (like Dan Rather, they don't know the difference between a typewriter and a word processor), so it had to be sent to them by either DNC or Kerry Campaign disinformation activists with instructions to disseminate.

Now they've had months to propagate and percolate, and people believe they are true.

My point is that the DemocRATS have been laying the groundwork on this for months.

Actually all this is getting to be sorta fun with SEE BS.

The more they lie, vacillate, spin and do false news

stories the more we get to expose them. I'll take

those odds any ol' day. FR Rules.

I agree- it didn't take long for this smear to get shot down. Talk radio was all over it, too. The MSM is re-arrainging the deck chairs on the Titanic, while the band saws merrily away.

The whole debate on this topic here misses the point--and you are deluding yourself if you think this is not a serious election issue.

Most of the discussion on Free Republic is addressed to the proposition that the only legislative proposal on this issue is sponsered exclusively by liberal democrats.

But where this issue really counts is with the college and high school kids and their parents. And what this group is talking about, uniformly, is not pending legislation but rather Bush Administration action which makes sense only if the Bush Administration intends to propose legislation instituting a draft.

That action was the crisis effort to restaff local draft boards, half the positions on which were vacant; coupled with a renewed effort to intimidate young men who are in the required to register class into registering.

Third level clerks have said that the reason for this effort "is to be prepared for eventualities--maybe we will need certain specialized skills we can't get in the marketplace".

The fairy tale is that certain kinds of specalties: medical, computer, and foreign language, might be needed in foreseeable contingencies. They already have the power under existing legislation to appropriate these people, probably without pay. Further, as to the computer needs, there are excess people out there with these skills who are unemployed and who would find a government paycheck attractive.

As to the foreign language skills, they have needs that are not met in the free market--but for the reason that there are no employables out there. Not many people have the skills; many of the people who do have the skills are sufficiently unreliable politically and otherwise, that they are not of use even if the military had them. The only excess personel out there with these skills are educators who are teaching others the skills that are required. So the government is not going to draft those people either.

The special skills draft explanation does not fly. Further, this story came out after the effort to recruit people to restaff the draft boards as part of an effort to deflect the political heat from a bad political decision.

The real explanation is that the administration embarked on an effort to gear up Selective Service because its personel needs, occassioned by the Iraq conflict, are not being met with volunteers. The Bush-Cheney Administration intends to initiate draft legislation and implement a draft as early as possible in 2005. I don't see any other explanation.

I don't think a Kerry-Edwards administration would do anything different--it might take Kerry a little longer to implement a draft but FDR promised in 1940 to stay out of war and not to implement a draft and Kerry will have no more trouble forgeting his campaign promises that Roosevelt did. So far, we have not seen either Bush or Cheney commit that they are not going to implement a draft--they are making fun of the politically inept charge that they intend to do so but they have not said they won't either.

Now I also agree with those here and elsewhere who argue that the administration, like Lynden Johnson and Jack Kennedy, underestimates the probable consequences of doing this. By itself, a draft may not result in a revolution. But it might.

Conscription is a workable solution to manpower needs in a situation under which there is a clear viable direct threat to the US. But under the present situation, where we have troops scattered all over the world on peace keeping, nation building missions, and doing police duty in Bosnia; where we have an easy non-military answer to the Iraq requirement which is to break the country up into five manageable political areas, compulsive government service is not going to be acceptable to any part of the younger generation.

It will also be difficult to see another Mohammadan attack on North America as justifying conscription. Defense of the domestic US is also a requirement that admits of a fairly direct solution which is to close the borders, identify all non-citizens who are in the country, and kick most of them out unless they are here serving some purpose which is in the long-term US interest.

We need some kind of effective domestic security institution and the FBI was been largely irrelevant and counterproductive in responding to the attacks on the World Trade Center, TWA Flight 800, the Oklahoma City bombing and other similiar incidents.

These are real political issues that ought to be at issue in this election. Kerry is inept and may not be able to get them before the house.
