Frost drops folk singer with criminal past from fund-raiser
10:04 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 29, 2004

By DAVE LEVINTHAL / The Dallas Morning News

U.S. Rep. Martin Frost is canceling a fund-raising appearance by Peter, Paul and Mary member Peter Yarrow because the entertainer pleaded guilty to molesting a 14-year-old girl more than 34 years ago.

The fund-raising event, slated for Oct. 11, will go on as scheduled without Mr. Yarrow's participation, campaign spokesman Justin Kitsch said.

But the Frost campaign said it had no immediate plans to refund money to donors who have purchased tickets – ranging from $250 to $1,000 – believing they would see the folk music legend perform.

Mr. Frost, D-Dallas, continually mentions his support for Amber Alert and anti-child abduction legislation in his campaign against U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Dallas, to represent Texas' 32nd Congressional District.

"While Mr. Yarrow received a presidential pardon in 1981, crimes against children are very serious offenses," Mr. Frost wrote in a statement. "I do not believe it is appropriate for Mr. Yarrow to campaign on my behalf."

Weird, because I was just reading about Yarrow last night. Seems he's been campaigning for Kerry as well. There was an incident reported by Ceci Connelly where Kerry got in Yarrow's face to stop him from harrassing a female reporter. At least he likes 'em older now. ;)

I vaguely remember the incident. He probably thought it was so long ago, it was buried forever.

Speaking of that, Ceci said that Kerry mimed toking a doob while listening to this jackass perform Puff the Magic Dragon. Presidential material?

It's another shining moment in the Carter legacy. He pardoned Yarrow as one of his last acts before leaving office.

So I guess that Peter Pawed Mary?

Mary would have been about 32 when that happened, so she was about two times too old for Peter.

If you read the All-Music Guide's entries on Peter, Paul and Mary, and the individual members, there is absolutely no mention of this incident. Do you think that would be the case were they conservative Republicans?

On Saturday, Kerry kicked off a 4-day Iowa swing which is fast becoming the Peter, John & Caucus tour as folk music legend Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary travels with the Senator as his activist event opening act…

This vote-seeking, folk-singing tour took an unusual turn Saturday night as Kerry and Yarrow dropped by a party held by the Story County Democrats in Ames, IA.

Moments after the Senator's arrival, none other than Howard Dean walked in the door, prompting one partygoer to debate, Should I talk to Dean in the kitchen or Kerry in the living room?

The Governor strummed a tune with Yarrow then quickly exited stage porch. Kerry listened from the kitchen and cringed as his friend called him forth to the center stage den for a group rendition of Puff the Magic Dragon.

As the folk star began his signature song with an unintended double meaning, Kerry mouthed a few words then took his index finger to his thumb, pursed his lips, and feigned a marijuana toke.

Among the happy memories from my childhood in the '60s was listening to our collection of Peter Paul and Mary records. Such great harmony. Oh well...Now they are Kerry supporters and former child molesters. Shut up and sing indeed.

Here's a beaut from their PP&M entry:

Without skipping a beat, they picked up from their early-'60s beginnings, only the civil rights anthems had new meaning in an era when the laws protecting those rights were under attack by the Reagan administration.

So, this is the little baldheaded guy with the mustache and a sweet expression on his face and a gentle demeanor who's always singing about peace and justice and magic dragons and stuff? Sheesh! Who woulda thunk it?

I thought it would be Bob Dylan.

Bob Dylan was a man who wanted to fight
Set fire to the dropouts, late into the night
He packed a Winchester rifle and Colt when he went out
And he came back smiling ‘cause he knew what life’s about

Yup, I believe Pete enticed the tiny tot up to his hotel room by asking if she wanted to ride on Puff's gigantic tail. After he did the perp walk, Mary toured alone and I caught her once at a local venue. Fat, conceited, with a mediocre voice and no stage presence, about half the audience, along with me,had slipped out by intermission.
