Kerry, On American Nuclear Weapons: "I'm Going to Shut That Program Down"
Debate Transcript | 10/01/04 | Becki Snow

Posted on 09/30/2004 11:22:49 PM PDT by dandelion

What is the biggest threat to the United States? According to John Kerry, it's not terrorism, but nuclear proliferation - and not just foreign weapons programs. He means OUR nuclear weapons programs...

DEBATE TRANSCRIPT

LEHRER: If you are elected president, what will you take to that office thinking is the single most serious threat to the national security to the United States?

KERRY: ...Right now the president is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to research bunker-busting nuclear weapons. The United States is pursuing a new set of nuclear weapons. It doesn't make sense.

You talk about mixed messages. We're telling other people, "You can't have nuclear weapons," but we're pursuing a new nuclear weapon that we might even contemplate using.

Not this president. I'm going to shut that program down, and we're going to make it clear to the world we're serious about containing nuclear proliferation.

NOTHING speaks more clearly about the mindset of this candidate that THIS answer to THIS question. Kerry believes OUR weapons program is the biggest threat to the U.S. today - and that's what Kerry's going to shut down. Nothing in this debate compares to THIS statement for illuminating the choice between Bush, who believes that our enemy is terrorism - and Kerry, who believes that our enemy is our own weapons program. Kerry believes that our enemy is not Osama Bin Laden, or Saddam Hussein, but our own scientists, who are trying to develop weapons to win the War on Terror.

I don't recall our own weapons crashing into the World Trade Center - do you? But I do recall our own weapons hitting the target at Tora Bora. Which leads to a question which must be asked of John Kerry -

Why does he think that the single most serious threat to American Security is not the men who are trying to kill us, but the men who are trying to save us?

I'm going to post this to my blog - I believe this information has been completely passed over by the media. It needs to get out that THIS was his answer to the question - "what is the most serious threat to the national security of the United States?"

Exactly. The President should've nailed his ass to the wall on this...but something tells me we're gonna have some ads out that will do just that.

I agree and we'll see that phrase "global" used again. Kerry wants to be the "global" President, not the US President.

Kerry's answer shouldn't surprise anyone. He has been voting against any and everything that is needed to defend this country. Zell Miller got it right in his speech when he asked what Kerry and the democrats would defend this country with. Spitballs?

Didn't he also say he is upset that Vladimir Putin is showing signs of reinvigorating communism... How's that for stategic double talk... I will shut down our nuclear weapons just as the Russians start sparking up Cold War part II...

Strategic Defense is our friend Senator Kerry...Don't throw the Baby out with the bath water...
Kerry came off as a typical politician full of promises and short on delivery. Empty suit.

The President was more human, more real, less scripted, resolved, confident and optimistic.

One man tells us what he thinks we want to hear and one man speaks from his heart

Kerry is giving our enemies a good place to hide. Just build a bunker and our enemies can develop all the nasty weapons they want because the U.S. is not going to be able to get them. Kerry doesn't want us to have nuclear bunker busting bombs.

Bush says we should go after the terrorists wherever they are. Even in a Bunker. I like that answer.

BTTT. Good find. Kerry really is still the pacifist wus in sheep's clothing.

When he invoked the name of Ronald Reagan, I was so hoping for Bush to bitchslap him down about how much Kerry never supported President Reagan and voted against almost every weapons program that Reagan used to win the Cold War.

I would have said: Mr. Kerry, I knew Ronald Reagan, and I Ronald Reagan was a friend of mine, and from what I know, you obstructed Ronald Reagan at every turn. If it were up to you, we wouldn't have had the tools to beat Russia in the Cold War. Why should we believe that you are equipped to win the War on Terror?

KERRY ALSO SAID HE WOULD GIVE IRAN URANIUM IF ELECTED, & HE WOULD LEGITIMIZE NORTH KOREA'S DESPOTIC REGIEM BY NEGOIATING WITH THEM AS EQUALS!!!

The man has served notice that he is a clear & present danger to the security of the nation!

Kind of goes along with his record in the Senate, don't it? Well, he's at least consistent on one thing. He wants to disarm the United States.

Oh yea. And provide Iran with uranium. And from here on out, pass a global test to see if we should defend ourselves or not.

He will make us safer? To who? Our enemies?

Haha..not needed..sure...so even though terrorists can hunker down in a bunker...a "bunker-busting" nuke isn't worth the investment?? Try again, troll.

When Kerry's answer to Lehrer's question was nuclear proliferation, I was wondering if he, like Jimmy Carter, had consulted Amy Carter before this debate.
