Violent video games worked for me!
Minnesota Daily ^ | 10/1/04 | Bobak Ha’eri

Posted on 10/02/2004 7:45:33 PM PDT by qam1

It’s very, very naughty to throw a hand grenade at an ambulance.

I long for the days when I could massacre the undead in video games and not worry about corrupting myself or society. But wait … who am I kidding? The controversy over violence in video games is far older than most people realize.

From 1976’s “Death Race,” to “Mortal Kombat” in 1992, to the 2001 release “Grand Theft Auto III” and beyond, the controversy pesters whenever over-anxious parents, watchdog groups and legislators are looking for an “easy basket” against moral corruption. In all the hubbub, these arguments have missed a fundamental question: What ever happened to the children that first played violent video games?

It’s been more than 25 years since the Atari 2600 mainstreamed the industry and 20 years since the original Nintendo. The granddaddy of violent video games, “Mortal Kombat,” is already a tween. Countless violent video-game playing children have grown up to be adults. Has anyone sat down and looked at what’s become of these children?

I know I was curious, so I sought them out. It ends up they’re everywhere. Starting at my law school, it turns out many fondly recall “finishing” opponents with blood-soaked vengeance in “Moral Kombat II.” Over in the Medical School, I found students who, when not learning how to preserve life, routinely gather to dissect each other with bullets in “Halo.” Heck, I even spoke to members of law enforcement who passionately enjoy carjacking vehicles in “Grand Theft Auto.”

What’s going on here? Not one was in prison for murder, arson or even tax evasion! Many scoffed at the thought of even owning a gun.

I’ve observed sizable numbers of doctors, lawyers, junior executives, political consultants and many other young professionals who play or have played violent video games to some extent in their lives. Weren’t these the same kids who were supposedly being corrupted by video games? Yet here they are, taking up the mantle of leadership in society. Might these be mere games and not devious engines of social corruption?

Yet, just the other day, the British Broadcasting Corp. continued the rage against the video-game machines, citing games where players “murder” their opponents in games such as “Doom III” (omitting that their opponents are ghouls, but I’ll hold off on that issue). They even awoke the “classic” anti-video game argument, that mimicry encouraged people such as the Columbine shooters.

Hmm — Did I just not understand Columbine? Two unholy sociopaths shoot up their school, and it was because of their video games? As though playing violent video games made them in any way different from any other teenage male for the last 25 years? It seems as though violent video games are an easy answer for those who’ve never played them.

What is it that’s happening in this handful of marginal cases? Are these instances of people being morally corrupted by video games, or morally corrupt people who happen to play video games? Why not just point these arguments at all media, including movies and books?

To a much lesser extent, they are, but because video games are still a relatively new medium, they bear the brunt of worse misconceptions. After all, even holy books are interpreted to mean vile and terrible things (just look at Brother Jed) — video games are no different (and in the case of the Bible, no less violent).

Still, I have hope. As each generation of gamers gets older, we will hopefully carry this same understanding to our own children: Just because you shoot some zombies on the Play Station 2, doesn’t mean you’re going to shoot people at your high school, reality and fiction are separate, and it’s very, very naughty to throw a hand grenade

To date, I've probably brutally murdered a hundred thousand in Counter-Strike alone. Not including any of my other games.

I often would steal cars in GTA:VC and run over pedestrians. Occassionally I'd steal the car then stalk and brutally murder the person I took it from. Sometimes I'd get the sniper rifle and "wing" people only to finish them off after they tried in vain to run.

Never hurt anyone in real life. Not even a puppy.

It's pretty fun. It's like Half Life if Valve was a bunch of Satanists.

I've racked up over 100 frags in one online game of UT2004. I must've killed almost 100,000 so far.

So far I've supressed the voices in my head.......

I've played these games my entire life.

I didn't start shooting people because of Wolfenstein(The first "Doom"). I didn't start sleeping with hookers because of Leisure Suit Larry. I didn't rip heads off because of Mortal Kombat or Street FighterII.

They are all fiction.

Although I have to say that the one liners in GTA Vice City, Redneck Rampage, and Duke Nukem 3d are still hilarious.

I preferred the golf club for that...

This dude doesnt even mention GTA:San Andreas, the most awaited video game this year, coming out Oct 25th. Combining Los Santos (LA) San Fierro (SF) and Las Venturas (LV), it will represent the whole of the state of California.

The main character is a black gangbanger, a big difference from the Tommy Vendretti slickster Italian type. This game is about 5-6 times as huge as the previous GTA games. You guys want to see how bad ass this game is?

Finally--the truth. I've killed roughly a billion lifeforms playing video games and I've never--not once--had an urge to kill anybody in real life. If anything, video games are what keep me sane.

I'm waiting for San Andreas, too. But Metal Gear Solid 3 is higher on my list.

Gaming is a multi-billion dollar per year market. Many of our future warriors are in training right now and don't even realize it with games like the DeltaForce series, Battlefield 42 or my favorite, Desert Combat.

I also like to play "Carmageddon II" where you hit peds and try to take the other cars out. My favorite cars are the 1956 T-Bird and the 1963/65 Buick Riveria. B-) Anyhoo, other games I like on the Playstation are "Army Men 2 - Air Assault," "Final Fantasy VII," "Final Fantasy VIII," "Lunar - Silver Star Story," "Syphon Filter," "Road Rash Jailbreak," (where my tagline comes from) and "Twisted Metal." Army Men 2, I love the bug hunt using the helicopters, especially the bumble bees, I love how they just disentigrate when you cut loose on them. Syphon Filter 2, I like the head to head mode you can have with a buddy, one time, we engaged in a knife fight and we both cut our throats at the same time and died. B-) The Final Fantasy games are cool too, love the anime look and the storylines. Video games do provide a good way to release pent up frustration, especially when you deal with the general public everyday like I do.

PC wise, I like Diablo II.

Syphon Filter fan, eh? What did you think of Syphon Filter: Omega Strain? I HATED it. And I say that because I love the first three SF games, even SF3, which was a bit of a disappointment

Throw into the mix a $100 million lawsuit filed by attorney Mike Breen, who is representing the surviving families of three students killed by Michael Carneal, a 14-year-old Paducah, Ky., high-school student who by all accounts was obsessed with violent video games, opening fire on his classmates on Dec. 7, 1997.

The first things I bought when I got my first paycheck (which was a humongous four-weeker because of a misfiled tax form) were a disk drive for my Commodore 64 and a copy of Gunship. I remember on a lot of missions (especially the Vietnam scenarios) I'd come across a formation of trrops and just perforate the crap out of a whole battalion with that big front cannon.

I guess it did ruin me though. To this day I have a strong urge to machine-gun terrorist scumbags. Yep, musta been the video game...

People against violent video games see them as perpetuating the human disposition for war making. If only they could suppress violence there would be more money for social spending, on themselves. They misunderstand the nature of man.

Yeah, it comes out in Japan first and there has been quite a big ruccus about it. Metal Gear Solid 2 was an ok game, I simply beat it really quickly and sold it back though. I'm still playing GTA:VC. I'm hoping MSS3 will turn out as good as it looks.
