I enjoyed reading this. I live in McLennan County and you truly captured the flavor of our area. We were all stunned by the Iconoclast's Kerry endorsement, and it's safe to say most of us saw it as an insult to us and to our President. This area is fiercely loyal to W, and we are all proud that he and Laura chose to live here. He and Laura have been good neighbors and support Crawford in so many ways that don't make national headlines. When they are in residence they go out of their way to make sure their presence doesn't disrupt traffic or business. Almost the only way we know they are here is the faint background drone of the air patrol. The Iconoclast made a lot of enemies last week, with good reason. No town wants to be inaccurately portrayed by the liberal media's agenda to elect Kerry at all costs. As to the Peace House people -- I had the misfortune of meeting a few of them at some nonprofit seminars in Waco. They are a bunch of aging, activist, liberal hippies who think they are much more important than they are. Thanks for setting things straight.

Thanks much. I tried to be fair to all sides. I'm hoping to salvage the situation, and maybe persuade the paper to at least a politically neutral position. It can be such a great asset to the community. The Bushes have been great neighbors, although they still haven't invited me over for dinner.

Looks like the next story will be describing how the locals at Crawford threw a newspaper out of it's town and went with another one.

I would like to see the NY Slimes cover that!

Thanks. You would think I would be liberal with a nick like this, would you not? ;-) People should realize that conservatism is inclusive

"You reveal so much of yourself when you write sincerely that it's scary to put it out there."

That is so true. I've been working on a novel for about 2 years (currently revising it) and one of the hardest things about it that it forces you to access the darkest places inside yourself.

Thanks for a terrific post! It's very well-written and I love hearing the perspective from Crawford.

I do hope the people of Crawford get together and make their opinion known on a national level.

The "Texas Iconoclast" is Molly Ivins' new favorite paper.
It's named after another paper, a Waco publication founded in the 1890s by another favorite of Miz Ivins', William Cowper Brann.

Mr.Brann, held up as a liberal icon of his age, and oft-quoted by Miz Ivins, was also well-known as anti-religious - he hated Baptists especially - and as racist as they ever came.

Two sample quotes should suffice:
Brann is famous for having said, "The trouble with our Texas Baptists is that we do not hold them under water long enough."
On the topic of blacks, he said that they have "no more conception of morality than a hyena." He added, "you can no more educate honor and chastity into a c--- than into a brindle cat." The "civilization of the black man, such as it is, is due to his enslavement by a superior race."

This is the founder of the original "Texas Iconoclast," and the man of whom Ivins said that it's "a shame we have no William Brann or H.L. Mencken around to mock some of the more patent idiocies advanced in the name of organized religion."

As for Mr Brann: He was challenged to a duel by Mr. Tom Davis, who shot him dead in the street in Waco, and was himself killed by Brann's shot.

"People should realize that conservatism is inclusive"

Not necessarily so.

Well, there aren't that many towns smaller than Crawford. We played Tolar a couple of weeks ago, and they were smaller. There were only about two yards behind the end zone, and our ball boy had to jump a farmer's fence and go into his field to get the ball after every extra point. I think the visitor's press box was a deer stand. The people in Tolar were great, and I love the atmosphere. Somebody asked me how many people were at the game, and I think it was all of them. Tolar is about 500 people, and I know including the Crawford people that traveled, there were at least 800 or 900 at the game.

Whoops! The site of the last post won't let me link to it. Proper spelling, according to the Copperas Cove scoreboard is "BullDawgs".
