Kerry: No comment

Should you wish to be a fully-fledged member of an anti-American support groups at the United Nations in New York you must hate George W. Bush, love John Kerry and be rich. To be both a member and a leader, you need to be unimaginably rich.

During September, one such person -- the "Red Queen of Peace" -- was roaming the U.N. corridors as she has done for the past 36 years. It was Mrs. Cora Weiss, daughter of the late Faberge Fragrances millionaire and friend to the Soviets, Samuel Rubin. Paraphrasing Shakespeare, age has not withered her, nor custom soured her variety. She presents a facade untouched by serious thought, hence her support for John Forbes Kerry.

The Weiss wealth is fortunate for her friends as she has helped many of them (and Kerry's friends) fund projects by way of the Samuel Rubin Foundation, of which she is president. There is Washington's Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), the Geneva-based International Peace Bureau, the Peace Action Network and its related Student Peace Action Network, and the New York-based Hague Appeal for Peace (HAP). Cora Weiss has been director of disarmament programs of Riverside Church and is the founder of Women Strike for Peace, a group that never questioned its Soviet masters.

Not content with merely funding such groups, she is the Marxist hatchet-lady who combines membership in the influential Council on Foreign Relations with being boss-woman of the Peace Action Bureau and the Hague Appeal.

-- as under Catholic rules it would affect the legitimacy of their two daughters.

IANAC but, as I understand the "rules", this statement is a crock.

you are right - it has nothing to do with the legitimacy of his 2 daughters.

it has everything to do with appearances for him, to say that he 'got' an anullment.

"For his second marriage, to Teresa Heinz, Kerry sought an annulment from the Catholic Church for his marriage to Julia, which she bitterly fought -- as under Catholic rules it would affect the legitimacy of their two daughters."

This "illegitimacy of the children" argument is a bogus one with which some liberal 'Catholics' have used to assail classical Catholic teaching on divorce. The Catholic Church does not recognize divorce, (the marriage must be declared 'null' by the Church, meaning there was a serious theological-canonical impediment to the marriage rendering it invalid). But annulments in NO WAY render the children of these parents 'illegitimate'. All people are created by God, in His image and likeness, not by man. Nothing God creates is 'illegitimate'.

Below is an official Catholic explanation of the question of 'illigitiamcy' regarding children of Catholics who have had their marriage declared null, (anullment).

Does an annulment make the children illegitimate?

"No. The parents, now divorced, presumably once obtained a civil license and entered upon a legal marriage. Children from that union are, therefore, their legitimate offspring. Legitimate means “legal.” The civil divorce and the Church annulment do not alter this situation. Nor do they change the parents’ responsibility toward the children. In fact, during annulment procedures the Church reminds petitioners of their moral obligation to provide for the proper upbringing of their children."

I'm a Catholic but you are right that per the rules Kerry's annulment doesn't affect his daughters legitimacy.

However in the general public's perception and especially to non-Catholics it seems to indicate otherwise. His asking for an anullment for his marriage to the mother of his children is still a cold, cold thing for a father to do, especially since the only motivation was more $$$ for him.

Often seen with Cora at the U.N. is her husband, Peter, a former chairman of IPS, a board member of HAP and a stalwart of the National Lawyers Guild.

Peter was also a participant in the Winter Soldier Investigation and the VVAW's lawyer during the period when John Kerry was with the VVAW.

Her ties with John Kerry date to 1970, when Mrs. Weiss was co-chair of the notorious Committee of Liaison with Families of Servicemen Detained in North Vietnam. Her reward for wartime travel to Hanoi and for exploiting the miseries of these GIs and their families was to be nominated chairwoman of the committee celebrating Vietnam's admission to the United Nations.

I wonder how she fit into the POW/MIA Senate activities that Kerry led, ultimately lifting the trade barriers to Vietnam in the early 1990's.

Her name came up prominently in the report of the 1991-1993 Senate POW/MIA investigation Kerry chaired:

United States Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs, Report of the Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs: Senate Select Committee - XXII: Accounting For Missing Servciemen

In January 1970, the Committee of Liaison with the Families (COLIAFAM), released a list of 156 U.S. POWs detained in North Vietnam. The Co-Directors of the Committee were Cora Weiss and David Dellinger. The Committee also released a list of five servicemen "confirmed as being dead by the North Vietnamese." Of these five, three were listed by the DRV at the time of the Paris Peace Accords as having died in captivity, while the other two were never confirmed as having been held captive. The remains of all five have been repatriated.
