A letter Senator Tom Daschle wrote two years ago to a fellow Democratic senator in Missouri is stirring up an abortion dispute in South Dakota's US Senate race.
Republican challenger John Thune says the fund-raising letter illustrates a clear difference between the two candidates on abortion.
The letter went to Senator Jean Carnahan of Missouri. It said in part, "The US Senate's pro-choice leadership cannot afford to lose an ally like Senator Carnahan."
Thune says the letter gives voters a clear understanding of their choice in the Senate election. He says he has always believed it's the government's job to protect life, including that of the unborn.
Daschle says he wrote the note for a colleague and not a cause. He says letter does not change his personal belief that abortion is a tragedy and that alternatives should be pursued.

I think Dashle is going down. He's finally found himself in a position where he can't slim his way out of it.

He says letter does not change his personal belief that abortion is a tragedy and that alternatives should be pursued. In other words, dismembering children in their mothers' wombs is evil, but I can't be bothered to do anything about it.

....but I can't be bothered to do anything about it.I don't think he is saying that at all. He is saying "We must keep our 'pro-choice' Democrat leadership intact so that we can be sure abortion remains legal."
Isn't that a lot different that simply not lifting a finger to stop it?

Sounds like Daschle is a tragedy and alternatives should be pursued.

These RATS are still trying to pollute the relevance, meaning and purpose of the rights enumerated in our Constitution. These RATS are still trying to have it both ways by stating the LIE that although they are against abortion personally, they are for it for "constitutional" reasons.
What part of "The right to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" do they not understand? There IS NO RIGHT TO MURDER.

The worst part is when he says that legislation won't help because these are judicial decisions. No one ever asks why he's then blocking judges who might change the situation.

By attempting to answer the letter, Daschle made the classic error of both giving the story legs and acknowledging the truth of it.

South Dakota came with in a hairs breath of out right banning abortion earlier this year, but some in the state house were persuaded it "wasn't the right time". Daschle is pretty popular because he sends a lot of pork home and sending him to DC gets him out of Sioux Falls.
