A man in southern Norway was out looking for tree burls in the woods Monday afternoon when an angry male moose found him instead. The moose went on the attack, but Salvesen fought back, fearing for his life. Norwegian moose are generally shy and usually run in the opposite direction when encountering humans. In this case, the moose was more than simply aggressive.
"He charged right at me," a shaken Salvesen told local newspaper Fædrelandsvennen in Kristiansand. "I screamed, tried to run and dove behind some trees."
The moose kept pursuing him, Salvesen claimed, so he swung the axe he was carrying to cut wood burls off tree trunks.
"I hit him in one of his back legs and I could see that his leg broke," Salvesen said.
The broken leg didn't stop the moose either, and he swung his head towards Salvesen and tried to trample him with his front legs.
"So I lunged at him again with the axe, and got him in the head this time," Salvesen claimed. "The moose fell and I grabbed his horns, only to get kicked again."
The moose finally retreated and limped into the woods. Salvesen, in shock and with moose hair between his fingers, said he stumbled to the nearest house to get help.
Local wildlife authorities later searched for the wounded moose, but he wasn't found. Salvesen said he's still shaken, not to mention badly bruised.
"It will be a long time before I go wandering in the woods alone again," he said.

I seem to recall reading that more people are killed by moose in North America annually than by any other animal, including bears, cats, snakes, and Demonrats.
I know the moose has been out of work since Northern Exposure went off the air, but sheesh!

My wife, sister, brother-in-law, and I were once photographing a moose off a logging road in upstate Maine when it started to trot very quickly towards us. My wife and sister have never let my brother-in-law and me forget how the "big brave men" beat the women to the safety of the car!
Moose can be testy.

Whatever happened to Moose?
Moose are overly "testy" (appropriate word) during this time of year. It's the rut (woohoo).
Here in northern VT you see some really strange behavior from folks who would refer to this as "upstate" VT. People think that just because these big lumbering animals seems rather benign, they won't attack. I've seen idiots from the states just to our south take their kids on their shoulders and move toward the animals as if they're going to pet them. (Darwin Award candidates for sure.)
As for the post that referred to humans killed by moose, that's due to car collisions, I'm certain, not attacks. Most of the year a moose will just walk away, but during the rut, watch out. Did I tell you a moose bit my sister once? Moose bites can be nasty.
Has PETA heard of this outrageous treatment of wildlife?
A Swede hitting an animal with an axe! That is VIOLENCE!
A male moose challengng an intruder is nothing new, but a Swede fighting defensively is totally against the wimpy policies of Swedish foreign policy. Swedes are always supposed to be neutral. The burly burl-collector should have stopped to consider things from the moose's point of view, meditating on the years of oppression suffered by mooses under human oppression.
Once again proving the old adage:
"You don't have to able to outrun the moose....."

Just what exactly is a burl? What would one do with one, if he knew what it was? What do they taste like? Can you make wine of them? What particular tree does it come from? Is this some strange Norwegian custom, like snipe hunting?
Found this definition - A burl is wood cut from a large, rounded growth on a tree. Burl has strong, distinctive grain and is used as a special veneer.
Just damn.
