Ignoring the self-contradiction,
it's doomed.

Thanks,
Doesn't the US have a stealth ship either in development by us or someone else for us, or already in service..
Just thought I had seen something similar come across the Blog...

We actually have several.
The SEALS use the Sea Spectre Patrol Boat MKIV, which is very stealthy. I've also seen pics of a ship that is a catamaran and appears like the Confederate Merrimac above the waterline.
Problem with all of these vessels (including the Swedish) is they are meant for littoral duty. Hard to hide a 600 foot destroyer or cruiser, much less a 1000ft carrier. We're working to reduce the radar profile on all of these but it will be limited. But it does make jamming easier. All the 21 class DD21, CG21 and CVA21 are set to be stealthier. In fact the CVN-77 incorporates several stealth features.

Stealth ships have been around for a century. They're called submarines.

Doesn't the US have a stealth ship either in development by us or someone else for us, or already in service.. IIRC, the operational stealth ship models being tested by the US are bi- or tri-marans. Last thing I read said that at least one was operating out of a port north of Corpus Christi on the gulf Coast of Texas...

Thanks, I was flustered we might be outdone by the Swiss. If we are ever outdone by the Swiss Navy there is no hope for our country.
The Swedes, however, have outdone us before in the sense they developed things which we have adopted.

They dropped the 21 program, or rather it became the X program. I work on the DD(X) program. The CG(X) will follow the DD(X). It will be pretty cool, but totally different. The traditionalist in me hates to see it, lots of the traditional Navy things are giving way to computers. If it does all the stuff they say it does, it will be pretty cool.
Still, I personally think we need to make about 1500 PT boats and riverine patrol craft. Maybe assign Marines to each boat for a boarding party and send them to the gulf. I read a great book about PT boats, it was called "devil boats." I did not know it but the PT's sank more tonnage then anything except our submarines in WWII. And they had paxton superchargers, which is always cool.

Here's the drawing of DD-21. The Zumwalt.

The Swedes also have some excellent small submarines. So good in fact, that we're currently trying to "rent" them for training as OPFOR.

Thanks! (I note the heavy VLS capability. Is that what is referred to as a small "arsenal ship"?)

Yeah, I have seen that nomenclature now that you mention it. I was an EW on a DE/FF. Had to go up the antenna mast all the time. It was quiet up their and no officers. Going to be hard to hide all the waveguides and transmission lines.
Prior to Newport, I was stationed on a riverboat in VN. Just yesterday I saw a post that the Marines are doing riverboat duty in Iraq and not the Navy. I agree with that whole heartedly. Patrol craft are all about small arms, and the Marines are the experts.

The Swedish Stealth Navy has been sending undercover seamen up the Yarra River here in Melbourne for years. These undercover seamen usually end up with garishly painted faces screaming broken-drunk at the top of their voices at the Australian Tennis Open, which is located fortuitously close, for the Swedish Navy, to the Yarra River.
As a precaution, the Victorian government is going to place mines in the river for the upcoming 2005 Open. Melbournians have been warned to look out for blondes in wetsuits after New Years Eve.

Trimarans are structurally difficult to design and maintain. I always wonder why we don't give hydrofoils another try. The U.S. Navy had the Dennison which performed to specification, but never exploited the terchnology.

I have been watching this vessel and other developments for some time. The Swedish, the Chinese, and others understand the necessoty of fighting successfully in the littoral regions:

The Swedish Visby Class Corvette

The new Chinese PLAN 525 Maanshan Class Frigate
Having said that, with the test-bed Sea Shadow, the Lottiral Combat Ship (LCS), and the DD(X) (The DD-21 program was cancelled and replaced with the DD(X)), the United States Navy is also developing our own advances in this area.

The IX 529, U.S.S. Sea Shadow

The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS)- General Dynamics Design

The DD(X) Next Generation Destroyer
