I do not know what G is, and I've seen no discussion of it.
For the most part, liberals see Iraq as another Vietnam, and conservatives tend to see it, and the WOT in general, as a replay of WWII.
My point is that the WOT is potentially both and neither. The very process of deciding whether to categorize it as A or B limits creative thought about how to respond appropriately.
Invading, conquering and occupying countries as in WWII does not seem to be a valid response, and arresting individuals doesn't either. Yet the discussion seems to switch back and forth between these two options as if they are the only ones imaginable.
I understand your argument that our government should look for other options as well to deal with the war on terror. But you seem to forget one important aspect to the "occupying of countries" approach and that is the necessary spread of democracy in the middle east. This has a two-pronged tactic; one, to liberate the people and give them the satisfaction that only true freedom can bring and two, to create pockets of US friendly-democratic regions who will in turn become allies in the war on terror. Spreading democracy and a free-market society to other countries give us shared values and interests that could potentially lead to a lessening of animosities and burgeoning mutual tolerance.
Our occupying countries will not necessarily bring them to a democracy. And a true democracy is not necessarily friendly to the US and may not even have a true civil society. In 1938 had Hitler allowed a free election, he would probably have won an absolute minimum of 75% of the vote.
Democracy has been described as two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.
Historically speaking, o.n
Make that a "no."
Although Imperial Germany was a semi-capitalistic and semi-democratic country when it went to war with France and Britain.
Yeah that was the closest one that I could come up with.
