WASHINGTON, D.C. -- When pro-Kerry commentators solemnly pronounce Debate Round 2 to have been "a draw" -- you know George Bush won that round.
The president won because he went in with a theme spoken by the heavyweight champion Joe Louis, just before his 1946 victory over the lighter, faster Billy Conn: "He can run, but he can't hide." (The Brown Bomber caught up with Conn in the eighth round of that first TV spectacular.)
Bush's debate plan was to keep boring in on the Kerry record: flip-flopping this year on the war, but all too consistently liberal for 20 years on tax increases.
On the war, Kerry almost eagerly made Bush's point, at first saying, "I do believe Saddam Hussein was a threat," and moments later denouncing Bush for being "preoccupied with Iraq, where there wasn't a threat."

The trick is getting Joe Public to believe it.
One of my favorite moments:
On the war, Kerry almost eagerly made Bush's point, at first saying, "I do believe Saddam Hussein was a threat," and moments later denouncing Bush for being "preoccupied with Iraq, where there wasn't a threat."
The president exploited the contradiction in Kerry's latest policy, which claims the ability to attract troop support from France, Germany and Russia -- while agreeing with them that the war was a diversion. To Kerry's "plan" to hold a summit, Bush asked: "And what is he going to say to those people who show up at that summit? 'Join me in the wrong war at the wrong place at the wrong time'?"
Although Kerry accused Bush of "mass deception," he let the president focus on that illogical policy. The Democrat weakly cited recent worrying by Republican Sens. Richard Lugar and Chuck Hagel, recited a list of retired generals who endorsed him and embraced Ronald Reagan. Such a stretch for company, accompanied by a plaintive "We will get tough!" never shows strength.
When Kerry complained again of "going it alone," Bush was ready with a powerful counterpunch: "Tell Tony Blair we're going alone. Tell Sylvio Berlusconi we're going alone. Tell Aleksander Kwasniewski of Poland we're going alone."
This not only showed that Bush knew these allies personally, but could pronounce Kwasniewski's name, which reminded Polish-Americans that Poland's president had responded angrily to Kerry's brush-off of his country's sacrifices in the first debate. (Next day, Australians stoutly re-elected John Howard, a staunch coalition member, who trounced a cut-and-run opponent -- good news for coalition leaders.)
Kerry also blundered with a weird attack on an $84 item in the Bushes' federal income tax return, supposedly from a timber business.
"I own a timber company? News to me," said Bush, adding engagingly in what was the most natural moment in the debate, "Need some wood?"
It turns out that Kerry relied on an Annenberg Internet Web site that later admitted it had been confused, which left the Democratic candidate out on a hardwood limb.
Bush was too much the gentleman to point out, now that their income taxes were in dispute, that Mrs. Kerry paid only 11 percent on her $5 million income, while the Bushes paid 28 percent.
On this Bush has to STOP being a gentleman. Bush has to hit this thug in the gut in front of everyone.!
gee, I usually read his Op/ed in the NYT - why the star-tribune this time? (/sarcasm)
Welcome to FR.
Made the U.S. unpopular? So what?
You should have told her to ask them how nice it is for them to be able to be speaking an Anglo-Saxon dialect versus a teutonic one. Buh-bye
First impressions are the most lasting they say...and Joe Public heard Ron Reagan, Andrea Mitchell and Chrissy Matthews hand the win to President Bush. We just need to keep reminding people.
No buddy the trouble is with the animals who spat on your wife.
No one believes you. Buh bye!
Being right isn't always popular.
You know, if only informed intelliegent people we allowed to vote the final total in this election would be Bush 85% / Kerry 15%.
We have an imbecile troll in Jack Finnegan blaming our President when his wife is spat on by some degenerates.
How about defending your wife's honor girlie-man?
Your wife doesn't get along with her business associates "across the pond"?
Jack, as your heroine is so fond of shouting: SHOVE IT !!
Don't be such a girlieman!
"The trouble is: our president has made the US really unpopular"
I guess for you, being popular with "jerks" is important...
The trouble is: our president has made the US really unpopular.

It's too bad your wife had to experience what our Vietnam HEROES had to experience when they came back TO THEIR OWN COUNTRY, due to the likes of John Kerry.
I'm in London all the time and I've never had a problem. The most I get is a taxi driver telling me how bad Bush is. Be careful about generalizing. I know a lot of Brits that are conservative.
Hey Jack, if you think we believe this cock and bull story you just told, you need to get off that crack you're smoking.
Our first President was not particularly popular in England. Our sixteenth President was not the most popular either. He paid for it with his life. Our forty second President was very popular around the world. He also did nothing to protect the American people and readily traded missile guidance technology for campaign contributions.
Someone shoved and spit on your wife and you weren't on the next flight over. What kind of man are you. How does someone with a last name like Finnegan take that from some Brits. Why, if I didn't know any better I would think you are a spineless, puny, girlie man, liberal.
Hello, goodbye.

Are you visiting from DU??
Sounds like it.......
Possible Troll sighting
Why didn't you say so?
In that case, we should all just forget this ever happened, and beg the forgiveness of Islamofascist terrorists everywhere.

Don't go to Europe. Seriously, it's going to get worse. I've heard Europeans say that it's Bush's fault now but if we re-elect him it's all American's fault as we will have approved of his policies.
Frankly I'm sick and tired of Europeans trying to influence our election. When Bush is re-elected, and he will be, just don't plan any trips to Europe. If you have to go there for business, stay out of bars and public transport. The European economy is sick now. A fall in American tourism is just the ticket to push a sick Europe over the edge.
Your wife was not spat on because she was an American.
She was spat on because of her behaviour.
You should have chosen Franceasthe country she visited, it would have made your lie a little more believable. I guess Tony Blair's wife gets spat upon all the time. Not.!
Oh....may it be.
I've been over there too. Bush is not the cause of anti-Americanism, but rather the combination of a screed-writing press and a public that believes everything they see on TV. Television came late to Europe, they have very few voices, and 90% of Europeans cannot discuss Bush vs. Kerry with any significant knowledge base at all. I find them, on the whole, grossly ignorant of American politics. My aquaintance is with France, a counrty which just 2 decades ago was still giving 25% of their votes to an avowed Stalinist. Exceedingly stupid people.
----(But great cheese and a gorgeous countryside). As they say: "how odd of God to waste France on the French."
I just got back from London a week ago and got the opposite reaction from everyone I spoke to. Taxi drivers and pub patrons make for better conversation I guess.
Horse hockey. That's akin to saying that the police negotiator is a murderer when a cowardly thug shoots his hostage.
The Left and its complicit media is largely responsible for portraying President Bush in the worst possible light and "making the US really unpopular." They're using every means at their disposal that they dare use. It's as effective a set of ploys as those they were using on Saddam in the 12 year run-up, while their leaders became even richer and more elitist.
All that deserves to have as little tangible effect on President Bush as it would have had on its continuation with Saddam.

Solution? Don't do business in racist England. Yes, racist:
"she was pushed and spat on when they heard her accent"
Incredible picture. We need more reminders of September 11, 2001. It seems as though so many have forgotten why we are at war. Thank you for posting it.
"Tell Aleksander Kwasniewski of Poland we're going alone."
Kerry set that one up. The RATS were trying to get Bush to pronounce the the Polish Presidents name incorrectly so that they could pounce on Bush. Kerry jumped, Bush moved and Kerry landed on his face.

Do you think this precious child or her family give a rat's @$$ if anyone spit on your wife? Popular? You should be ashamed.
Now we move on to Wednesday nights's domestic issues debate, where the Flop-Flippin for Kerry is even more intense!!! There's a reason he never talks about his Senate record, and now America's going to find out WHAT IT IS!
FYI, we are popular with probably 50% of the Brit's just like we are popular with 50% of Americans (ie red states, ok maybe 20% of the Dims actually love their country so 70%).
I think he is right, though, not to push the percentage the Kerry's paid on their taxes. That could backfire. I suspect their income is largely dividend income and Kerry can come back and say that he, in fact, opposes the tax law changes that reduced the tax rate on dividends. He can then use his own personal situation as the perfect argument that Bush has helped the rich avoid taxes.

Your president made the US really unpopular with Islamists, many of whom atill think, because of him, that every American is a drunken coke fiend who'll hump anything or anyone that stays still long enough and gleefully murder our babies in order to use their budding body parts to fix our own failing ones.
I'd welcome you to FR but...
Ooh, she is adorable! What a little angel.
I had saved the picture of the little boy the other day because it was so sweet. The little girls running to daddy is really sweet also.
Thanks for the ping.
Daaaaaaaaaannng ! That's gonna leave a mark !
