...there are plenty of newly minted U.S. citizens, expatriates and older people like Dethman and Godat joining the tide of voting neophytes, according to Teresa Van Deusen, the creator of the Voter Virgin, a campaign and Web site promoting voter registration among new and lapsed voters.

Buoyed by their new power, Godat and Dethman are more than ready to join the political fray, though on opposite sides.

Both want to make up for lost years and decades of regret over not helping to choose the right president.

He (Dethamn) supported John F. Kennedy, but hated Richard Nixon. He would have backed Ronald Reagan in his second term because he had enough guts to fight for his convictions. He lost faith in the senior George Bush because he felt like he didn't hold his ground in the Persian Gulf War. And he thought Democrat Bill Clinton was a "weenie."

..."Bush got clobbered with 9/11, and I thought he handled it very well and pushed right in and said, ‘No more,'" Dethman said.

...Dethman said he believes re-electing Bush would help abolish the threat of terrorism. He worries that Kerry will pull the troops out of Iraq if he becomes president, leading to the violent fallout that plagued the Vietnam War.

Dethman, who was in the Navy during the Vietnam War, knows firsthand what it's like to come home ....

"He drove a nail through the heart of everyone that died over there," Dethman said.

Because of his opposition to Kerry, Dethman stuck to his guns when it came to registering, even though it took him a month to fill out his voter registration card because he kept making mistakes. ....

There are two people I know one is my sister and an old school friend who have never voted,but they are registered and ready to vote a second term for the President. skeery scares them that much!!
