Oregon Opens Probe of Voter Fraud Charges

Oregon officials have opened an investigation into alleged improper voter registration practices, Secretary of State Bill Bradbury said Wednesday.

The investigation follows a television report in which a paid-per-registration canvasser said he had been instructed only to accept registrations from Republicans, and that he "might" destroy those from Democrats.

It was not immediately clear what group employed the canvasser.

Bradbury said the investigation would be based not only on the KGW-TV report, but also on other complaints that have not yet been made public.

In Roseburg, Douglas County Clerk Barbara Nielsen said she had received a complaint from voters who said canvassers working for a Chandler, Ariz.-based consulting firm, Sproul & Associates, tried to push them into registering as Republicans, saying otherwise the canvassers wouldn't get paid for their efforts.

Additionally, Nielsen said she had gotten calls from voters who said canvassers from the same group had implied that their cards wouldn't be turned in if they registered as Democrats.

Sproul & Associates is run by Nathan Sproul, a former head of the Republican Party in Arizona who has subcontracted with the Republican National Committee to do voter outreach.

Reached in Arizona, Sproul told The Associated Press that "we registered anyone who wanted to register."

A spokesman for the Republican National Committee said the party has "a zero-tolerance policy for anything that smacks of impropriety in registering voters."

Similar voting fraud allegations surfaced against Sproul & Associates in Nevada, where authorities said Wednesday that they were "looking into whether any state or federal laws were violated."

In Nevada, a former employee of a Sproul & Associates group called Voter Outreach of America told reporters Wednesday that he had seen his boss shred eight to 10 Democratic registration forms.

Sproul denied any shredding occurred.

Does anyone feel what's going on in this country right now? If Bush wins the same way, losing the popular vote, there will be riots in the streets. There will be violence. The press is orchestrating this whole event and like sheep, we all go along with it. I'm sick to my stomach. I think I'm getting ulcers. What they are doing to George Bush is criminal. This is the first time I'm going to say this, I don't think Bush is going to win.

I don't claim there is no such thing as a dishonest Republican registration drive, but something smells fishy in this story. This Bill Bradbury ostentatiously "opens an investigation" and it gets covered by the national wires.

Yes - It is a setup. Bradbury has been playing blatent partisan politics with the Oregon state election and is being roundly criticized for it. Stay tuned. There is more to come.

where would you rather be right now?

Where john kerry is in the electoral college, or where GWB is?

Remember, if GWB merely wins the sames states he did last time, he gets MORE than 270 votes, due to demographic shifts towards the states he won.

I'm concerned about voter fraud, but my gut is telling me that in the next two weeks this thing is going to open up to a margin voter fraud can't compete with.

We're all concerned.

Try to take it easy.

If you're really worried about ciolence in teh streets, start getting ready now, make sure you don't need to go out the day or so after the election and if you have kids, consider keeping them in for a day or two after.

And pray.

If they thought Kerry were going to win, they wouldn't be doing this. They are sure Bush is going to win and they are ginning up their machine to protest. Don't get sick, get mad. Don't give up hope, fight. These are the Leftist bast--d brownshirts who tyrannize by physical and legal threats. These are bullies. We must not allow them to run over us. WE must stomp THEM beneath our bootheels so that they learn we will NEVER be intimidated by their brownshirt tactics. We owe it to future generations so that they can vote and debate and act freely and not in fear.

How much does anybody want to bet that Bill Bradbury will get caught in this set up.

I realize you met this for another but I hope you wont my intruding on your post. I to thought about that tonight on whether folks will accept Bush if he wins the electorate verses the popular vote.

I mean, his record should speak for itself, but the question has yet to be asked of either dems or repubs, will you set aside your differences and work with the one who wins. It will be up to the loser to set the tone. I do not see Kerry going down as a good sport.

To share your concern of whether Bush wins or doesn't win, it is a legit feeling and we should be adult enough to discuss this without being hurtful or unkind.

Your post gave a lot for folks to think about. Thank you.
