TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A senior al-Qaida operative lived in New Jersey and posed as a student while conducting surveillance of financial institutions as possible targets for a terror attack, according to a published report.

The operative, identified by U.S. officials in Washington as Dhiren Barot, 32, entered the United States on a student visa, The Record of Bergen County reported in Thursday's editions.

Could you post some perinant info on this cad? Like where he lived, went to school, worked and worshipped? Does the article give it? Was he married? Did he date? Who? Where? When? What kind of car did he own or drive? Where did he eat? What activities did he engage in? How was he caught?

Make your post worthwhile. This too much a wee bit is just cheerleading of some sort. Idle and wasted.

Just because the idiot tyrants on our court's benches force us to excerpt does NOT mean we can not rewrite! You must. We must. I do when I post excerpted articles. Otherwise don't bother posting such a tease of no information. Why bother?

If you feel this was worthwhile enough to spend the time on to note and to post, well make it so for the rest of us.

Thank God Britain was on its toes:

Authorities believe Barot was dispatched by Osama bin Laden himself to conduct the scouting mission in New Jersey, the newspaper reported. Barot was arrested by British authorities in August and remains in custody there.

The British say Barot had reconnaissance reports for the Prudential building in Newark, the New York Stock Exchange and the Citigroup building in Manhattan and the International Monetary Fund headquarters in Washington.

Discovery of those surveys led U.S. Homeland Security officials to declare an orange alert in early August and prompted heightened security measures at the buildings. Authorities later concluded that the buildings were not under imminent threat of attack.

The Record, citing "an official familiar with the matter," said the al-Qaida survey on the Prudential building contained minutely detailed information, including an observation that a van carrying explosives probably would not fit into its underground parking garage. The report recommended using limousines instead.

It also contained a listing of potential getaway routes to be used after an attack. One notation said using the PATH commuter rail system was an option, but cautioned that exact fare should be carried for use at its automatic turnstiles to speed a getaway, the unnamed official said.

U.S. counterterrorism officials believe Barot authored the reports, which were written in fluent English. They describe surveillance operations during 2000 and 2001.

Here's 2 target hints for today freepers: The Department of State issues the visa in the foreign country.

Then immigration or as it is known now Customs and Border Protection admits the visa holder into the U.S. to "study".

As long as the price for getting caught being in America illegally is little more than a slap on the wrist (if anything at all), this will continue...until we have a catostrophic loss of life. Then, it may be stopped.
Neither candidate is right on immigration. Kerry is wrong just about everytime that he opens his mouth. Bush is on the right side of 99% of the issues; however, the lack of immigration/border enforcement in this country is a big mistake. One has to hope that it won't be a deadly one.

"...until we have a catostrophic loss of life."

But we already had that. Those 19 guys weren't here legally, they were visa overstayers, sneak-ins, etc. Nothing has changed, Bush just made things worse with his thinly veiled promise of a future amnesty. We should have closed the borders on 9/11 and starting rounding up illegals on 9/12, but we missed that chance.

Priority #1 here should be to identify the schools involved, and then check to make sure that these schools are fully cooperating with the FBI in releasing all of the records they have for their foreign students.

I can pretty much guarantee that the New Jersey Institute of Technology is one of the schools involved . . . 1) it is located in Newark, and it has a foreigner/citizen student ratio of about 15:1.

Student visa restrictions have hit higher ed right in the gonads. It's a big issue with some universities here in the US, which have become too dependent on the big $$ they receive in non-resident tuition, and are now facing tough competition from schools in Great Britain and Australia. Makes me wonder how many colleges here are letting international students slip in under the door just to keep their numbers up.

Was that you that made the "piss on Clinton's grave I hope he dies" statement or something to that effect on the other thread? You were wrong there and are wrong here. We need much stricter and more diligent background checks of all international students, but certainly not to ban them.

I am excellent friends with many students from China, Turkey, Korea, Italy, Canada, India, and other countries, and while we might not share all of the same political views, they will return to their country with a high opinion of America. They will also be in positions of importance and command respect, having obtained PhD's from one of the best schools in the world, which will make their opinions all the more valued.

The reason people vote for idiots like Kerry and Nader is because they are un-informed, i.e. under-educated about what's going on. Spreading higher education throughout the world will only work to America's benefit. Denying it to good people will only hurt us. It is well within our ability to examine who we let in and deny entrance to the murderers.

Foreign students are big money. They pay full tuition. With more than half the students at private colleges getting some sort of financial aid the universities will do anything to keep them here.

Probers retrace terror suspect's moves in N.J.
Thursday, October 14, 2004
BY DUNSTAN McNICHOL
Star-Ledger Staff
State and federal investigators are scouring northern New Jersey and New York in an attempt to reconstruct the activities of an alleged al Qaeda operative charged with conducting surveillance of Newark's Prudential building in the months before the 9/11 attacks, the FBI's special agent in charge for New Jersey said yesterday.

FBI Special Agent Joseph Billy said Dhiren Barot, a suspected terrorist plotter who was arrested in London in early August, "was here in New Jersey legitimately and spent time here in New Jersey. He was low-key."

Barot has been charged with a series of terror counts, including conspiring to use radioactive materials against the public and possessing, since February 2001, reconnaissance plans of the Prudential building in Newark and other financial landmarks.

The Prudential building, the Citigroup building in New York and other financial institutions have been under heightened security alert since early August after investigators in Pakistan found the surveillance information. Barot and seven others were arrested Aug. 3.

Billy made his comments at the kickoff of a seminar in Trenton to brief local police officers about the current state of the terrorist threat in New Jersey. He told the 150 law enforcement officials gathered at the seminar that the Prudential surveillance conducted by Barot was a genuine threat.

"That was the real deal," he said. "That was discovered on a Qaeda operative. He had packaged the information and had forwarded it to his supervisor."

Billy said investigators are interviewing landlords and others who might have encountered Barot while he spent time in this country as a college student in 2000 and 2001. Their goal, he said, is to determine whether any associates of Barot's may remain in the metropolitan area, poised to conduct attacks.

In England, Barot and one of the other men arrested, Nadeem Tarmohammed, are charged with possessing "a document or record, namely a reconnaissance plan concerning the Prudential building in New Jersey, containing information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism."

Barot also was charged with possessing two notebooks containing "information on explosives, poisons, chemicals and related matters." The final report of the 9/11 commission states that interrogation of Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks, revealed Barot was sent to the New York area in early 2001 to do surveillance on possible economic and "Jewish" targets in New York.

Yesterday's seminar was designed to beef up the "front-line" of counterterrorism efforts by alerting local law enforcement officials to what sorts of suspicious activities they should be looking for and how to make sure information they uncover is widely distributed.

As an example, Billy noted the recent information state officials passed to Franklinville and Rumson school officials after data about their schools were found on computers in Iraq. He said there did not appear to be a threat aimed at the schools, but he wanted to make sure local officials had not seen any suspicious activity.

Billy, State Attorney General Peter Harvey, Director of the New Jersey Office of Counter-Terrorism Sidney J. Caspersen and others said that by staying vigilant to evidence of budding terrorist projects, local law enforcement agents can head off attacks. He said officials should be alert for attacks conducted to influence the upcoming presidential elections.

"We know they have the intent to do it," he said. "The question is whether they have the capability."

The "New York Times" has quoted an unnamed senior US official as saying that the British arrests were part of a global crackdown on Al Qaeda suspects who were "part of this web that emanates from Pakistan". Barot had reportedly travelled to the US with two others for casing economic targets, but the identities of the other two have not yet been established. It is said he was generally using South African and Sudanese passports for his travels

New Jersey Republicans need to get united and throw the stinking Democrats out of office in this state. I think they truly are the most corrupt of all the dems in the country right now, with the particular exception of Terry McAuliffe, whom I despise.

With New Jersey being the terrorists fave home away from home McGreevy wanted to put his boyfriend (or victim, whatever!) in charge of our security. Now they have rigged it so we are stuck with Mr. Codey for another year, a man elected by such a small number of voters that obviously he will be beholden to no one but the party.

The murder rate is up 19%, anybody doubt the media assault on the state troopers has something to do with that stat?

I for one pledge that if I am still living in this god forsaken state on next election day I will vote for whoever the Republicans run, including Mickey Mouse if necessary. I suggest that everyone else do the same.

Update from ABC Eyewitness News Investigation: They may have been operating out of Starbucks

FBI Believes Student was bin Laden Scout

Investigators Say He was Doing Surveillance Here

By Kemberly Richardson

(Newark-WABC, October 14, 2004) — He looked like any student attending college in New Jersey. But in reality, FBI officials believe he was sent here by Osama bin Laden to scout out possible targets for a terrorist attack. Eyewitness News' Kemberly Richardson reports.

Sources tell Eyewitness News they are making headway with this investigation. They say as they canvas the area showing people a picture of Dhiren Barot they are getting confirmation he was here.

He was seen at tourist areas, universities, and perhaps the most unsettling place: Right in front of the Prudential building.

A senior FBI agent tells Eyewitness News a Starbucks Coffee near the Prudential building may have been a perch for an alleged al-Qaeda operative.

Witnesses confirm that Dhiren Barot was seen inside the shop directly across from the building described by authorities as a potential terror target this past summer.

The 32-year-old is being held by British officials, charged with conducting surveillance of the company's Broad Street headquarters and other buildings in our area.

The buildings have been under heightened security since August, when Pakastani police discovered Barot's reports on computers and emails.

Sources say there are references to trash containers at Prudential Plaza, and that Barot paid close attention to vehicles that were being permitted into the area, including Fedex trucks.

Federal officials believe the reconnaisance took place in the months leading up to September 11th, 2001, that Barot was taking orders directly from Osama bin Laden and was well-known to Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, the captured mastermind of the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.

The FBI says he entered the U.S. on a student visa, and was living in New Jersey. Witnesses have confirmed he was seen at several college campuses in northern New Jersey.

The FBI also tells us Barot had two notebooks containing information about chemicals and explosives and may have been planning to use radioactive material.

A spokesperson for Prudential says they were briefed on all of these details back in August, and have taken appropriate security measure.
