I'm writing this from an internet cafe in La Paz, Bolivia. About fifteen minutes ago, I started to hear what I think was gunfire and cannon fire from right outside the cafe. It was shortly followed by bullhorns booming and people chanting. The gunfire is intermittent now.
I have no idea what's happening.

Not surprised by it. Gees, Bolivia has the most coups in the world. They had over 300 coups since its existence. Many South American countries are corrupt and unstable like Argentina and Paraguay.

You should get out of Bolivia if the revolt is happening. Not a safe place.

My wife and I used to sponsor a child there; he grew up and left the program. I hope he and you stay safe! I'd tell you to get back here to the Land of Lincoln, but there's probably more shooting in Chicago than Bolivia.

I'm thinking Venezuela funded it with the political organizational help of Cuba. I think you're right. Chavez longs to be a made member of the "axis of evil".

He'll be causing or aiding and abetting trouble throughout Latin America as long as he's alive. I'm afraid you're right. Things seem to be quiet since the referendum, I think its starting to really sink in that he is not leaving office alive. That takes a lot of the wind out of the hoopla, since any action taken now must be thought through in deadly seriousness. Either that, or get ready to keep your head down for the next couple of decades.
Its gut check time in Venezuela, and I wouldn't presume to tell them what to do about it. In the words of the immortal philosopher, "this ain't no disco".

When I was growing up, the man who lived across the street from us was a Bolivian exile . His father had been a government Minister and was executed in one of the coups in the 1930's.

Over at DU, they are probably telling each other this is Bush's fault or is an attempt of the administration to divert attention to domestic issues. I bet most people on DU would not be able to identify Boliva on a map, much less name its capital or even what language they speak.

Don't you know that Bush is President and therefore, we have four hurricanes hit Florida, Mt. Saint Helens is erupting, etc. It is increbile that everything that Bush does, says, doesn't do, everything is HIS fault.

It was a few months...but while I was there, the youngsters would walk up to me and ask me things like, "Is it true that in America you can go anywhere you want?" I spoke with many of the eager young people, who enjoyed practicing their English with me. They were very bright and curious, but most of all brave. Later many of them laid down their lives in an effort to gain their own freedom.
