Gotta disagree. The most over-rated American president, by far, is (the original) JFK.

People will be indulging in all this nostalgia for Camelot, and then you ask what JFK's actual accomplishments were, and a deathly silence falls over the room like you've committed an unspeakable social faux paux.

But it's interesting that nobody has any real answer to the question.

From what I can tell, his major accomplishment involved boinking a much higher grade of bimbo than BJ Clinton.

There are other catagories to their "Underrated/Overrated" series. Among them are catagories for Civil War Generals and Musicals. The most overrated General was Robert E. Lee and most overated musical was My Fair Lady. That should give anyone other than the bitchy cranks of criticism sufficient pause to take the whole thing less seriously.

Cancel it, demand a refund and donate the refund to FreeRepublic.

Why? It's only an opinion. Opinions are like [ censored ] everybody's got one. No harm done. History and memory determine greatness, not magazines and polls.

Like BUSINESS WEEK. I read that magazine faithfully for twenty years. I cancelled after it promoted Bill Clinton in 1996. BW is now a full-blown socialist rag.

I have a free sub to BW. I read it without fail the day it comes, only for its pure entertainment value: I can't wait to see what creative new ways they've come up with each week to talk about how evil Bush is and how much better the U.S. business climate would be if only we'd follow those brilliant Europeans.

I would love to know how they manage to make money; how in the hell can they publish a business magazine that hates business, and get people to pay for it?!?

Re: Kevin Baker Overrated & Underrated, and the Overrated designation for Ronald Regan.

What a pack of liberal lies, I am much disappointed your magazine has sunk to such disgusting depths. It is just incomprehensible that you print such garbage. There is not on factual thing in that article, all the article does is print the lies by the Communist Left that is out to destroy our country.

Does not anyone there remember that under Jimmy Carter we had “stagflation.” Interest rates were around 20%. In fact the S&L problem was due to a change in laws by Jimmy Carter. In fact it was the tax breaks put in place by Regan that gave Clinton such a good economy. It the payoff of S&L losses that created the huge budget deficits and a congress that reneged on its promise to cut spending. Regan should be given credit for working with a hostile Democratic Congress, and getting most of his plans through.

Does not one remember the stores of how Regan would start a nuclear war with the Soviet Union? The Russians themselves admitted that it was Regan that brought them to their knees, with his fight on communism throughout the world, including helping Afghan rebels fight the Russians with shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles.

Iran-contra was not flouting the Constitution, it was a way to fight the pro-communist in congress, and it must be pointed out that Regan was never convicted of any crime.

As for the lie “His reaction to the AIDS epidemic was sluggish and indifferent at best.” Fails to point out that Regan spent billion on AIDS before it was know what it was. Originally it was called “Gay Bowel Syndrome.” In fact the people who get it has not changed in 25 years, the majority are still Gays who practice anal intercourse and IV drug users. The spending on AIDS surpasses spending on all other disease, and can be stopped by a change in the promiscuity of the infected. This attack on Regan’s AIDS record is by self centered gays are not satisfied no matter how much we spend on it.

Furthermore, how can you say “air traffic controllers’ union was a watershed moment in the destruction of workers’ rights in America.” The air traffic controllers have a contract that does not allow them to strike, because they are doing a critical job. They broke the law. If Regan had let them get away with a strike you would be criticize him for not being a strong leaders.

It is getting both old and disgusting that liberal idiots, like those on your staff, want to rewrite history for their own sick political agenda. Why can’t you people get your morals together and print the truth as it is, not as you want in to be to insult one of our best Presidents.

Ain't it the truth? BW is a business magazine that hates business. And any politician who has a good word to say about business (GWB).

In spite of all he did and didn't do, some still act as though he was the Second Coming.

Actually there is much truth in that. Any positive legacy he might have left was possible only because he didn't do much. Unintentionaly he did exactly the best thing government can do to any country. Stay the hell out of the way.

However, that's not to say he did nothing. But we best forget that part.

I'm still trying to stick with Scientific American, but it's getting tough. The astronomy and physics stuff is still great, but after the relentless global warming and stupid sociology articles, their tribute to the bravery of Henry Waxman and his crusade against Bush's "religious assault on science" may have been the last straw.

How did you manage to make it this far? After their brazen, overtly political attack on Bjorn Lomborg a year or so ago, that was the last straw for me.

Their severe dumbing down of the contents didn't help either. It used to be too technical to be mainstream, but now it's so low-rent it makes Discover look like the Journal of Applied Physics.

I hadn't read SA for years and recently picked up a copy. It wasn't even remotely like the magazine I remembered. Was there really a time when you could pick a science or history magazine and not be pummeled with leftist dogma, or was I just so naive back then that I didn't notice it?

Yes, there really was such a time; you're not dreaming it. A few months ago I was poking around in a junk an antiques store, and came across a box of SAs from around 1980. I almost bought a few just because of the incredibly cool full-page ads in them for the Apple II Plus, but when looking through the content, I was amazed at how intellectual it was. Most of the articles were too heavy for a layman; it came off as the sort of magazine professional scientists would read as their idea of leisure.

It was almost nothing like the current-day SA.

This writer has some interesting strange ideas

FDR as underrated ??

FDR got us through the two greatest crises of the Republic;the Depression and the war;and built much of the framework that would actually win the Cold War

I wonder where this writer would put the Civil War (or, in the case of the South, the War of Northern Aggression)on the crisis list ?

I totally agree, Kennedy is the most over-rated American president. In office a little over two years, most people can't name any significant work done by Kennedy. Yet the libs gushed over him, putting him on a coin, naming streets, schools, you name it after him. But what the hell did he accomplish other than nearly blowing up the world? What he did do, was in part to attempt to clean up after his mistakes like the Bay of Pigs fiasco in Cuba. He caused as many problems as he tried to fix.

The Cold War was won by every President from Truman through Reagan,

WRONG... Every president, right or wrong, maintained a holding action against the Soviets. Reagan was the first President to go into office determined to try and beat them. Grenada, Central America, Afghanistan, Poland etc etc, these were not holding actions, these were attempts to beat back the communists, AND IT WORKED. One can argue he got them when they were already weakened, but the fact is Jimmy Carter had them when they were in the same position of weakness and he let them walk all over him. Reagan won the cold war.

Boy all of those fireside chats with Carter in his sweater telling us how miserable we were and how it was all our own fault just did wonders for me. </sarcasm off>

Ok, just so long as we don't go too far and put him below Carter. Carter was the worst president we ever had, but since he isn't highly rated he doesn't fit the category of "over-rated."

That's the way I remember it. Even TV back in the 70's had good science on it. The Discovery channel periodically reruns the old Ascent of Man series from PBS and it blows me away. I remember seeing it when it first ran, and it's as fascinating today as it was then.

It's inconceivable that PBS would run such a series today.

Actually I liked John F Kennedy... the only Kennedy worth anything. The only democrat president in my lifetime that comes close to being a halfway decent president. I respect the view that many here dislike him, but I'll give you a couple reasons that I do like him. 1) He did stand firm with the Soviets and Castro, when he could have totally caved in like Carter or Clinton would have. 2) He also had tremendous foresight to start a space race with the Soviets, which led to a rapid expansion in many areas of technology and science. 3) He truly inspired many people here and elsewhere to work toward defeating communism. That is not a trivial thing - Reagan did much the same thing in his own style. Reagan had a plan to defeat the Soviets, while Kennedy merely isolated them and tolerated (feared?) them. Now having said that, there are also a number of reasons why Kennedy was flawed and is not in the league of presidents like Reagan or Lincoln, but we all know of those already.

If he is overrated, why do those running for the presidency, even Democrats, still try to emulate him?

No, the most overrated President in history is/was/and most likely will always be: William Jefferson Clinton. In spite of all he did and didn't do, some still act as though he was the Second Coming.

And you know why that is, because for 12 long years, their party, on the presidential level, was in the crapper.
