I would like to think it is both of those reasons, and not the possibility that the bishops agree with Kerry.
What are we going to do about it?
Can we live with ourselves if we don't at least try to do something and Kerry wins?
Imagine the state of the Church in America after just ONE YEAR of a Catholic President like sKerry?
Indeed. Will some brave bishop have enough courage to pronounce this verdict of excommunication?
Our priest pointed out that the church takes no position in such matters, and he had not given the authorization to allow this to happen. He was even having the lawers looking into this situation.
I am upset at the continued silence by our clergy.
If they don't start pointing these things out to Catholics, do we go the way to Nazi Germany? (I am not calling Kerry a Nazi...) but does it demonstrate our ability by follwing political correctness to not offend anyone doom us a society?
I like this priest alot, and have worked closely with him, but when are we ever going to get the church to take a stand?
Still at a lose for the moment...
Hello my friend!
I'm confused by what your priest said. The Church evidently has taken a position on such things. The thing is, some (US Bishops and their underlings) in the flock are chosing not to follow. Vatican: Kerry guilty of heresy; incurrs automatic excommunication
I am a devout but highly disappointed Catholic. Beginning in the 60's the Church became a magnet for antiwar and activists and homosexuals. These same clerical hippies are now in positions of authority and have done significant damage to the Church.
Your priest/friend has a moral obligation to object to a law that he thinks is immoral and wrong. Unless he thinks abortion, euthanasia, embryonic research is o.k., he cannot with good conscience stay silent on these issues. I've read the voter's guide, and it only addresses the issues, not the candidates. As far as I'm concerned, any priest that is pro-abortion, is just a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Herein lies at least one difference between the orthodox Protestant approach and the Catholic approach. In my church, it is not the sinning per se that will get a member shunned -- it's the arrogant lack of repentance. Somebody like kerry wouldn't last one week with us. And if our pastor failed to make the correction, we would have to "correct" him. We just won't tolerate persistent heresies, corrupt doctrine and the embrace of abomination in our midst.
The priests who continue to give Kerry communion are jeopardizing Kerry's soul. I think this is difficult for many people outside the Catholic Church (and, unfortunately, for many inside the Church) to appreciate. Refusing communion to Kerry is an act of love, not punishment, intended to lead him to repentance of his mortal sin.
"But to boycott the Sacraments to get a point across--absolutely not. The Sacraments are not to be "used" in this manner. They were instituted by Christ to be received in grace and for grace, and defintely not for the purpose of a protest."
I agree - such a boycott would do spiritual harm to those doing the boycotting.
However, a seriously organised boycott of financial giving - even if it was only a postponement of that giving - might have the desired effect.
If the US bishops are anything like the hapless bunch we have in the UK, then they are probably more concerned about the financial viability of their dioceses than they are about the state of souls in their care anyway.
Large institutions hate cashflow problems, and there is probably sufficient support amongst Mass-going Catholics to do something to get Kerry out.
Is a Catholic who does not attend church beyond salvation?
A Catholic who deliberately and intentionally misses Mass on a Sunday or other Holy Day of Obligation is in a state of mortal sin.
They can have that sin forgiven by receiving the Sacrament of Confession and then returning to the practice of their faith.
However nobody who dies in a state of mortal sin will be saved.
The reason why I specified "Mass-going" Catholics, however, is that generally it is only those Catholics who actually go to Mass who support the Church financially. It is also only among Mass-goers that you will find a majority who are faithful to the Church's teaching on abortion and, incidentally, a majority against Kerry.
THis was the Homily at my mass Yesterday. Pray for the 'Conversion' of the Bishops, and the rest will take care of itself.
Called Kerry,Mikulski and their ilk, small potatoes...lol.
I was roaring with laughter...(on the inside...)
Thanks for the ping!
