Immigration officials try new tactics

PHOENIX (AP) - Law enforcement officials in the Phoenix area are using new tactics to cut off illegal immigration: They are going after used-car salesmen who sell vehicles to smugglers and are arresting operators of safe houses where immigrants stay after crossing the border.

Unlike past crackdowns, which have focused more on stopping immigrants at the border, immigration officials say the new campaign frustrates smugglers by zeroing in on the tools of their trade.

The tactic seems to be working in Phoenix, the nation's hub for transporting illegal workers throughout the country.

Smugglers, also known as coyotes, typically charge thousands of dollars per person to sneak immigrants across the border, either by foot or hidden in vehicles. Once across, many are taken to hiding places known as "drop houses," where they often stay for months before fanning out across the country to look for work.

For years, many smugglers stole cars to carry migrants from the border to the Phoenix area. But recently, used-car salesmen began selling cars to smugglers with fake liens and names on the titles, so if the car is seized near the border, it reverts to the dealer.

The dealers then resell the car to the smugglers, a practice that has allowed many to increase their revenue fivefold, said Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard. Police said they were tipped off to the scheme by a tow truck operator.

Yet another example of how illegal immigration spreads corruption wherever it touches.

*GASP!* I'm choking on my decaf-latte! They said "illegal immigrants" instead of "undocumented migrants". How reactionary!

Actually I'm even more surprised to see state officials actually taking their responsibilities seriously instead of just passing the buck to the feds. When did this happen?

Hello everyone! I've been MIA for my job (60-hour weeks lately) so I really appreciate many of you pinging me so important stuff isn't missed. What a gruesome mess! How to hold the politicians' collective tootsies to the fire on this issue post-election? The debates illustrated how both parties avoid it like the plague and how the press is too happy to play along with that. Please pardon the homilies but we, the non-blindered, are left shifting in the wind while the branch threatens to break. If being verbally beaten up for not goose-stepping along party lines isn't challenging enough, some FR members can't resist accusing us of being 5th colluminsts deliberately trying to undermine the election. I accuse them, in turn, of gross negligence taking care of our country's (and their progeny's) future for the sake of short-term profits.

Done ranting and thank you for your time.

Outstandingly relevant question! We've grown complacent to local governments crying that illegal immigration is strictly a Federal matter. In reality it is a local problem that should be dealt with by local governments in affected localities. I don't believe local governments ever lost actual power to deal with invaders so much as local politicos attempting to shuffle responsibility to higher levels to cover their falabilities. As we've seen, this results with the problem getting worse while government wastes time (and our money) squabbling. This must change.

Miriam-Webster: culumniate: to utter maliciously false statements, charges, or imputations about

What am I wrong about here? If i'm performing anal tranquilicy here I'll gladly bow out for wiser minds.

Not "tranquilicy", but ventriliquency, like Jim Carrey in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective"...talking out one's butt. And no, I'm not trying to deceive anyone. For that look to our representatives.

Could one of you guys put me on you're immigration/borders ping list? I feel like a lone wolf on this issue sometimes and I know there are a few others out in Freep land that feel the same on this issue.

Thanks; 4.10 was letting me know that too much deadly seriousness leads to coronary problems (he's a good guy). Much fun can be had in the Home Depot parking lots while wearing the ballcaps and nylon jackets favored by the alphabet agencies during their raids. Most uniform stores carry them for around $35.00 or less for the set. Iron-on lettering optional.

Done. You're not alone on this issue, though there's no shortage of money-grubbing traitors here willing to use our Constitution for a doormat while welcoming criminal invaders. Orange jumpsuits and soap-on-a-rope for the lot of them.
