Kerry Stands By His 1971 Testimony (and Says Every Document of History Shows He Told the Truth)

Posted on 10/17/2004 6:06:29 PM PDT by freespirited

All,

Today's Des Moines Register includes an interview with John Kerry. We can't post from the Register on FR, so I'm writing this up as a vanity.

At one point the reporters ask him, "What are the main mistakes you’ve made during your time in public office?"

Kerry actually proposes broadening the question to include the period before he entered public office, saying "Oh, gosh. Can I include before I got in? Because that was a big mistake. I mean, how I got in was a mistake."

After digressing a bit (to take a shot at Justice Scalia), Kerry explains himself, saying:

"I’m serious about the way I sort of brashly entered politics . . . The early stage, I think, left some baggage that I’ve lived with for a period of time. I think that was somewhat of a mistake."

After a bit more from Kerry on recent issues, the Register asks him "Do you include your testimony to the Senate on Vietnam [as a mistake]?"

To which Kerry replies:

"No! No, that was not a mistake! That was - I’m proud of standing up and fighting against the war. I’m proud of the position I took. Every document of history, including the military’s own assessments, supports I told the truth at a time that it was important to tell the truth."

I think it wonderful when a liar and traitor is condemned out of his own mouth.

The Winter Soldier conference Kerry alluded to in his broad brush accusation of war crimes by US soldiers in Vietnam has been shown to be largely a hoax by people who were neither in Vietnam or not in the positions that they claimed. Also, "free fire zones" are not in and of themselves war crimes -- they just mean that the soldiers can shoot at enemy combatants without authorization, not that they can shoot indiscriminately.

Kerry's version of the "truth," that his fellow soldiers were murderers and rapists, was used as propaganda against the POW's.
We were still at war.

How in God's name can he justify that? How does he have the arrogance to think that ANYone in our military would support a commander-in-chief who did that to American POW's?

His arrogance is only surpassed by his total immorality. What he did was SO wrong that it defies credibility.

Well, this pretty much rules out any chance the Swiftboat
Vets will stand down, not that it was ever terribly likely.

Kerry is going to have to contend permanently with the
spreading truth about his personal mythology of Vietnam,
and his subsequent betrayals.

Just something I've observed ... has this guy ever
apologized for anything? He seems to have a character
defect (one of many) that absolutely blocks it.

Kerry said he was proud of fighting against the war. He has said this before. Let me put it in the full context of what he said. David Broder (see his column "Swift Boats And Old Wounds', washingtonpost.com, August 24, 2004, at p.A17) cites a conversation he had with Kerry. Kerry told him that "he thought it would be doubly advantageous that 'I fought in Vietnam and I also fought against the Vietnam War.'" Broder goes on to observe that Kerry did not recognize that "some would see far too much political calculation in such a bifurcated record." Kerry has used calculation all along to self-promote. In this instance, he willfully has manipulated his Vietnam service and antiwar posturing as part of his distorted need to advance his political ambitions.

I don't know the answer. What I do know is that earlier in the campaign, he had at least backed off a little from the 1971 testimony, saying he doesn't like hearing it because he concedes that his language was "over the top."

His surrogates would always trot out that admission whenever asked if Kerry was planning to apologize for what he did in 1971.

This sounds like a retraction of whatever apology was implied in the "over the top" admission. If this is some kind of campaign strategy, I can't imagine what they are thinking.

Take Heart, The petition to disqualify him from Presidential office because of his self professed war crimes; has gotten more than enough votes to be served (265,000 I think) to the Congress. He should have retracted his self-serving Congressional testimony while he had a chance, and Apologized.

Kerry's claim may sound lame, but you have to remember that those who were not at least 15 in 1975 don't know the truth about his false testimony in 1971. That means anyone under the age of 44 may simply buy his forcefully stated claim that history proves his testimony is correct. That is why we need to get DVDs of Stolen Honor into the hands of those under the age of 44 -- along with the video clips of Kerry's testimony and the words from the Des Moines Register.

What happened to his recent admission that his 1971 testimony before Congress was a bit over the top?

Does this man ever stop contradicting himself?

How about his quote from the article:
"No, I’m comfortable being endorsed by people, but I’m not familiar . . . actually, the questionnaire was not filled out by me personally, so I can’t tell you, but I’m not - I think you have to approach those things very thoughtfully and very carefully. There are a lot of people with a lot more expertise than me who I’d want to call on their advice before I start telling people what to do or not to do in that regard. "

I guess that is why he dropped all those names during the debate.

And what's with him not even knowing what his stances are and then not being willing to stand up for them???

Ugh.

I disagree, although we at FR have heard that so many times that many take it as established fact.

I believe that the expose you describe will take place in the future, if interest in this topic survives the election.

FR's own "Interesting Times" may have provided the central meeting place for WSI debunkers at wintersoldier.com: http://ice.he.net/~freepnet/kerry/

That's the problem, If served today (as I was told); then an investigation by congress would probably ensue. I would expect that If he still wins, Edwards would fill out his term. However he might very well LOSE the Election unless he makes a VERY SINCERE AND CONVINCING (the overzealousness of youth, etc.) public retraction of his Congressional testimony about Vietnam and the Swiftboat Veterans. He's in a mess either way (of his own making).

Yep, lots of INTEGRITY, INTEGRITY, INTEGRITY there--SMEARING (by calling them war criminals) the reputations of hundreds of thousands of good, honorable and decent soldiers serving their country for his own political self-aggrandizement! Thirty years after the slander/libel--still no apology.

Lots of INTEGRITY there.
