It was Carter Vs. Ford, so where were you during the course of that election and when Carter claimed his victory(unfortunately). It was a pretty close race.
I don't really remember where I was. I was eleven at the time. I do remember where I was in 1980, when Reagan was elected. A friend and I were at the weekly pro rasslin' matches at the Louisville Gardens, when the announcement came on that Reagan had won. My friend and I booed and called Reagan an old man (Hey, we were fifteen year old punks at the time, and since most people in the arena were cheering the news, we, as teenagers do, wanted to be contrary). Over the next four years, I fell totally in love with the man (you know, as much as a dude can love another dude who he doesn't really know personally), and in 1984, then being old enough to vote, I proudly voted for Ronald Reagan.
He had vetoed a few spending bills saying we couldn't afford them. He was WAY overmatched trying to prevent the Democrats from giving Vietnam to the communists.
In fairness to him, he didn't manifest himself to be an utter moron until perhaps 1982 or 1983.
I voted for Ford. :-)
It was January 1, my first day in California. The Rose Bowl and an earthquake in Anaheim remind me of that day.
History would prove my father correct :-)
"I was boarding the Freedom Train. Anyone remember that going around the country?"
Wow. I remember standing in line for a long, long time with my fellow 9th graders to board the Freedom Train. Can only remember 1 item in the Freedom Train to this day....Bob Lanier's size 22 basketball shoes.
You did what?
I was in college voting in my very first election -- for FORD.
I was 8 going on 9, being born and raised in NYC.
Teaching mathematics in college. The head of the department (later college president) was complaining, "I can't understand how anyone with a PhD could vote for Carter!"
In 1976 I rooted for Carter
Of course I was only 6 and didn't know any better, 4 years later by 10 I wised up and rooted for Reagan
I was an adult running a business in Australia wondering how a man who looked as if he was retarded could have been chosen by the American people to be their President, that's where I was. (And after all these years, I still don't understand it!)
1976 - Starting my senior year of high school, listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Charlie Daniels, cruising in my '71 Mustang MachI, and trying to find a girl. Funny, wound up marrying a classmate 12 years later. We have 2 daughters that like... Lynyrd Skynyrd and Mustangs! Hey, I try to raise them right!
My first presidential election. I'll leave it at that!
I was thinking about creating an Internet site, focused on discussions of the ideals of liberty and freedom. Couldn't get it done and then years later this guy Jim Robinson stole my "idear". That's my story and I'm sticking with it.
I was four.
four and a half actually
I gave birth to my second child at Andrews AFB. I was in the Army and had just completed my 3 years in the Army after serving in Seoul, South Korea. He grew up and served as a Marine. My husband, also in the army was a journalist that covered President Ford on his trip to Korea. We have great pictures of that event.
I remember getting a ride home from confirmation class, and hearing the early returns. I distinctly remember it being reported that Carter was winning Michigan (Ford's home state). I wonder if that was an early example of media manipulation.
Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan serving my forth consecutive year overseas.
I would not be alive today if I had. LOL! My grandmother would have struck me dead!
My grandmother was on both President Eisenhowers staff and President Nixons staff. She and Nixon were fast friends. She was also the committee chairwoman of the National Republican Party. I grew up teething republican.
I was 16, senior in HS, showing horses, applying to colleges and living the good life in Newport Beach, CA. Was fairly clueless despite my super Republican parents. Now I know better.
It was the longest line in Philadelphia no less. I think I remember those shoes too. It was worth it.
I voted for Carter of course. I remember wearing a gold peanut necklace which were popular during that time. Was I stupid or what?
I was 21 and working in Arkansas for the Ford Campaign. Two more weeks and we could have won the race.
In junior high school.
been there, done that in 1972. On USS SS Batfish.
Lived in Astoria, OR raising two sons. Voted for Gerald Ford. Suffered the malaise of Jimmy Carter for the next four years. Jeez, those were the days!
I was 11. Dungeons & Dragons was far more important than some silly election.
getting ready for the big, big Bicentennial celebration that ever happened.
and partying a lot.
ROFLMAO, 4 years later we found out his looks weren't the only thing retarded about Jimma Catta
I grew up in Boston, and I turned 18.
A few days later after that I voted.
A bit of time after that I found myself on the road to Damascus, and the entire world changed while I was stoic and stayed the same.
I will never ever vote for a Democrat again. Even Zell Miller needs to rebuke that political party more strongly. He done good a few weeks ago, but he should renounce the Democrat Party completely.
I voted in my first election after turning 21 - one of the only ones voting for Ford -4 years later -most of those same people voted for Reagan.
I was probably smoking a joint, but I don't remember.
You are forgiven. Carter gave us eight years of Reagan. God works in mysterious ways. :^)
Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron One (HS-1), based at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, FL.
Thank God there is another adult on this thread! I was starting to feel really old with all of these, " I was potty training" posts here ! :-)
October 1976, turned 16 years old, saw Elvis Presley that year in Chicago!!
I had yet to be conceived.
He didn't? =o)
I turned 18 just in time to cast my first vote. I voted for Reagan in the Iowa caucuses!
I was on Active Duty serving in my first assignment at the Philadelphia Naval Regional Medical Center.....Ah, yes, those were the days, but I digress....I remember hoping Ford would beat Carter, but had no idea that Jimmah Cottah would be the disaster he was econominally (gas lines, rationing, home interest rate greater than 18% for my first house - sweaters instead of heat....oh the pain remembering his administration causes) and the foreign policy disasters....but then four years of Ford and we may not have had 8 of Regan so I guess it worked out !!!
Don't think I'll stay up all night this time, although you never know, but I will follow the lawyer's machinations from my new slot as an Army contractor on an Army post.
The Carter years provided lots of entertainment to offset having to wait in line for hours for gas, seeing the lights turned down in Vegas, etc. Who can forget Billy Beer, the Killer Bunny, the Playboy interview, Ms. Lillian, Carter's Mr. Rogers fireside chats, etc. I then thought he was somewhat harmless and well meaning, but I came to realize how dangerous he was (and remains).
Conversations with my Pappy would reveal we had mysteriously elected the "Wrong Carter". Go fig.
"It was Carter Vs. Ford, so where were you during the course of that election and when Carter claimed his victory(unfortunately). It was a pretty close race."
Probably standing against the wall with my nose in the circle for throwing rocks or something. (I was 5 =)
Just graduated from college (Nov 75), looking for a job, not an easy task in the mid 70's. I had been married for 4 years and voted for Ford. Not because I was a big Ford fan, but I really was uncomfortable with Carter. As it turned out my gut was right.
