Excerpts:
Sen. Fritz Hollings, the 82-year-old South Carolina Democrat, is sitting on his office sofa, telling stories in his inimitable style, which is funny and caustic. Suddenly, his eyes close and his chin drops to his chest. He looks like a man who's about to drool on his impeccable blue-and-white pinstripe shirt....So, after 38 years in the Senate, Ernest F. "Fritz" Hollings is heading home to Charleston with his wife, Peatsy....
Reporters: "They just look for a smart-ass remark. They already got their stories written, and they're just looking for filler to show they did a little bit of work." .... The folks who run Bob Jones University, the controversial Christian college in South Carolina: "Jackasses."
Farmers: "They're freeloaders on government."

All you South Carolinians have gotta read this article from last Thursday. It's a hoot. I am sooooo glad this old bitter man is finally retiring. As a BJU alumnus, I don't always agree with the school's leadership, but calling them "Jackasses" is uncalled for. He also said some pretty unrespectable comments about Pres Bush in the interview.

Boy, I'm not going to argue with the Senator from South Carolina on the subject of jackasses. He's an expert on the subject.

Fritz Hollings is an old style Democrat in a new styled Republican South.
Hopefully he'll be replaced by a conservative Republican who will better represent the thinking of the modern day South.

The good news is that with his departure and that of John Edwards, the average IQ of the Senate should increase substantially to around 75-76.

I was averaging both sides of the aisle. The IQ of the left side would only reach room temperature if you're talking about an igloo.

The folks who run Bob Jones University, the controversial Christian college in South Carolina: "Jackasses." What a bitter, bitter old man. Old-style Low Country elitism at its worst - in fact, that sort of attitude hasn't been around since the Plantation days.
Go Fritz!
And don't come back.

There is a lot of Lowcountry elitism. Peope in Charleston think that they live in the center of the world. So, you have alot of bedwetters down there near the water, Charleston, College of Charelston etc. What has happened is that the Piedmont and the Upstate and Myrtle Beach are the growing areas. Charlotte has helped teh upsatte greatly. If you haven't noticed I can't stand people who always mention they are from teh Lowcountry. No one asked pal. It's lile New Yorkers saying they are from NYC all the time.

What happened to the 'Contract with America' and term limits? We need to have 2 term limits for senators and representatives.

What happened to the 'Contract with America' and term limits? We need to have 2 term limits for senators and representatives. It would take a constitutional ammendment. They tried to do it on a state by state basis and the courts shot it down IIRC

"Fritz" has evolved from a Moderate to a very left wing liberal radical. He knew he would get beat this time so he chose to leave.
He needs to move to Massachusetts to be real close to Teddy "Boy".
Inez is a clone and one who will march in lockstep if elected. All she knows how to do is spend, waste lie and march to the liberal drummer.
The Democrats can give her the sound bites and she can say she disagrees with this or that but you can bet if elected she will pick up where "Fritz" leaves off.
Do not waste 6 years and allow Inez to cancel Lindsay Grahams vote,South Carolina will lose as much ground under Inez as with "Fritz".

Inez would begin her tenure by naming public facilities after Hollings. That is reason enough to keep her at home. Has I-26 to Charleston been named yet?

My favorite comment about Hollings was by George Will:
Hollings is the only Senator that needs sub-titles when he speaks.
Truer words were never spoken.
