PORTSMOUTH Betty Hill of Portsmouth, who along with her late husband in 1961, had the first publicized and best-documented UFO experience in the White Mountains, died Sunday in her sleep after a battle with lung cancer. She was 85.
On a return trip from Canada, the Hills said they were abducted for two hours by a UFO on Sept. 19, 1961. After going public with their story, the two gained worldwide notoriety.
Their story became the subject of a book and later, a made-for-TV movie starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons.
They traveled across the country and made numerous television and radio appearances telling their story.
When her husband, Barney, died in 1969, Ms. Hill continued the job alone.
In 1995, she published, "A Common Sense Approach to UFOs,"
Ms. Hills life was not all about UFOs.
She was a social worker for the state of New Hampshire where she trained foster parents and worked in the area of adoption.
She was also an activist throughout her life where she was a member of the NAACP and a founding member of the Rockingham County Community Action.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Rose Marie Stewart Norton of York, Maine.
Ms. Hill is survived by her daughter, Constance Jean Stewart Zukowski of North Little Rock, Ark., a son, Kenneth James Stewart of San Jose, Calif., and a niece, Kathleen Florence Miller Maden of Stratham.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Burial will be private.
Visiting is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
I remember this story! Carl Sagan even talked about it in the "Cosmos" series.
I doubt she's dead, just abducted again...
Cosmos was fiction.
PING, Quix's UFO ping list..
In other news, the Art Bell show ratings mysteriously dropped by 10%.
ping to quix's ufo ping list...
whoops...double post...my bad folks...
All in all, she lived a decent life and I hope she rests well.
THANKS.
UFO PING LIST PING.
Let me know if you want on or off.
I recall Look (weekly) magazine had a two week story about the incident.
I met her in 1976. Quite a character.
But more recently I stumbled upon a site that debunks UFO stories. I learned there for the first time some things that cast doubt on some of the best UFO stories. Betty and Barney Hill first drew images of aliens with long hair and long noses like Jimmy Durante. The classic oval shaped alien head evolved in their later hypnosis sessions. I also learned that Travis walton's family had a history of making false UFO reports. Finally, on the night of the Pacalooga dockside encounter, a toll booth security camera was pointed at the dock and showed nothing happened that night.
Any UFO buffs out there will know what I'm talking about.
Tell us about her please.
Shortly after I read it we had a UFO "flap" in my area with a lot of sightings. I figured it was just a matter of time when saucers would be landing on the White House lawn.
Add one or more votes to the Kerry column: here you have absolutely the perfect profile of a Democratic voter: dead and abducted by space aliens.
Do you recall the addy for the site?
We talked a bit and then Betty said she had to get going to catch the UFO's flying over Wells Maine at 8:15. Said they came fairly reguarly at that time. Betty Hill was not your run of the mill after dinner guest.
When I was young, I poured over this book. Just forever.
I don't know who this person is but the stories of abductions are the most ridiculous of all the various UFO tales.
sounds interesting
Sorry, Betty, couldn't resist.
Was she serious or was she messing with you? If serious, I'm guessing she was a little kooky, or else she knew something.
No, she lost a little something after her husband Barney died.
You mean all the others with him that night were lying though they told the exact same stories while isolated and all passed lie detector tests...
They sure were good...and never made a nickel off it either...
Was she beamed up, or did she just have a comet to catch?
I read the book about 10 or so years ago and found it very interesting. I often wondered what became of them. Now, I know.
It's Bush's fault!
My only comment is that I KNOW that she now knows the Truth, beyond question or doubt.
I trust that she will remember that God loves her and her husband.
Thanks, Quix!
Thanks for the ping Quix. I remember reading their story so many years ago and it was spooky. I always wondered what happened to them!
Most welcome.
They seemed like an interesting couple apart from the UFO stuff.
Blessings,
Blessings to you too, Quix.
I don't know, the Walton story is also one of my favorites, but I am telling you what I read. People don't only make up stories for money, they also do it for attention. Also, I'm afraid that UFO stories are so loved by the media they often fail to report facts that undermine the story line. Personally, I always thought the Betty/ Barney Hill story was brilliant and have always wanted to believe that one. For example, Norad records supposedly tracked a UFO landing and taking off at the time the Hills had their encounter.
I guess this means she will be voting for Kerry.
The Hill story is very interesting. No I dont believe in alien abductions, but their story is rather fascinating.
It seems hard to imagine that in the mid 60's a mixed race couple would concoct a story and choose to draw intense scrutiny to themselves.
They sounded like a normal, average couple when the alleged abduction happened.
Not like crazed attention seekers.
A lot of NH's history is strange.
Btw did this happen near "Mystery Hill" aka America's Stonehenge ?
It happened to me once.
I was driving to work and I suddenly blacked out. When I awoke I was in a strange room and surrounded by beings I couldn't identify. They wore all white and had strange masks on their heads.
Before I knew it one was placing a probe into my anal cavity while the others were prodding my chest with instruments.
I was then taken to another room and put through some type of scanning device. I was given some kind of drug and taken to a room where every hour they would come in and check my vital statistics as if they were monitoring their experiments.
I awoke the next day to find they carved into my left leg and ankle. I barely remember them giving me more mind altering drugs that was intended to render my memory useless.
OH WAIT...that was after a car accident I was in.
Thanks, Quix! I remember this incident well. Whether it really happened or not I don't know, but I believed that the Hills were sincere. I've always wondered what happened to them.
I think they were sincere, too.
I think she got to where she enjoyed the attention. But many people would.
It was while I was QB of the Green Bay Packers. Interestingly they chose to abduct me right after I had completed a 99 yard pass to win the Super Bowl.
I awoke to find myself surrounded by several hundred gorgeous blondes wearing bikini's. They were speaking an unknown language but I could sometimes make out words like "awsome" "handsome" "a real stud" "king" and a few other mildly complimentary terms.
After several years ruling the known universe, I happened to see a picture of Hillary Clinton. Suddenly everything went black and I found myself living in the Florida backwoods, slightly overweight with a little arthritis. No one knew about my previous life, they just treated me like an ordinary person.
Unlike all those other stories, I swear mine is true.
Apparently anal probes give you lung cancer,
Who knew?
I guess Michael Schenker's going to have a tough time getting the band back together, with the other half of the UFO couple gone.
As for me, I wish a hearty R.I.P. for Ms. Hill.
As for some of you, haven't you ever heard of not speking ill of the dead? Sheesh, whatever you may think of UFO's, Abduction, and related phenomena, Ms, Hill seemed to be a decent person outside of the "subculture" and deserves at least a modicum of respect.
Some people are deserving of ridicule at their death, Ms. Hill is not one of them.

Another oldie.
