Poll finds more blacks backing Bush than in 2000

President Bush could double his meager 2000 support from black voters this year with many of the new ballots coming from conservative African-American Christians, according to a poll released Tuesday.

By a large margin, 69 percent to 18 percent, blacks wanted Democratic Sen. John Kerry to win, but Bush's support was twice that of a similar survey by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies before the 2000 presidential election.

Bush is picking up support among self-styled conservative Christian blacks and blacks making more than $60,000 a year, the study said.

The poll found 11 percent of blacks were undecided. Independent candidate Ralph Nader was preferred by just 2 percent and 30 percent of blacks didn't recognize the name.

The survey also found blacks were more likely to oppose gay marriage than white voters, especially in the South, but also were more opposed to the war in Iraq and more troubled by the economy than non-blacks.

David Bositis, senior research associate at the center, speculated that Bush's support among conservative Christian blacks is tied to his backing for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriages and his "faith-based" initiative to funnel federal social welfare funds through church-linked groups.

The center interviewed 1,642 adults - half of them blacks - between Sept. 15 and Oct. 10. They were not asked if they were registered voters, but Bositis noted the center's survey results four years ago mirrored exit polls on Election Day.

Among the findings:

- Sixty-three percent of blacks said they were very concerned that their vote might not be counted. Almost half of non-blacks, 48 percent, said the same thing.

- Bush was viewed favorably by just 30 percent of blacks; compared with 67 percent with an unfavorable opinion. Only Christian conservatives and black Republicans viewed Bush in a positive light. Kerry's ratio, 78 percent favorable to 16 percent unfavorable, was not as high as Gore's, 86 percent to 7 percent.

- The percentage of blacks who thought the country is on the right track was the same as the support for Bush, 18 percent, and about the same as those who support the war in Iraq, 20 percent. Three out of four blacks thought the country is on the wrong track compared to 54 percent of non-blacks who said wrong track.

- Contrary to recent trends, the percentage of young blacks 18 to 25 who identified themselves as Democrats rose, from 51 percent in 2000 to 71 percent in 2004, while among blacks over 50 the trend was the opposite, toward independents and Republicans. Bositis attributed the shift to the weak job market and young Americans' opposition to the war.

- Blacks young and old, with and without a high-school degree, low- and high-income, and North, South, East and West, believe they are worse off financially than four years ago.

- Blacks and non-blacks are equally split on using tax money to provide vouchers for students to attend private schools, and a majority of both groups give the president's "No Child Left Behind" program only fair or poor marks.

- On gay marriage, 46 percent of blacks favor no recognition, 24 percent support civil unions and 23 percent would allow legal marriages. Among non-blacks, 37 percent wanted no recognition, 28 percent favored civil unions, and 29 percent would allow marriages.

The survey also tested reactions to public figures.

Secretary of State Colin Powell has a higher favorability rating, 69 percent, than Jesse Jackson, 58 percent among blacks. As for the Democratic National Convention's keynote speaker, 63 percent of blacks did not recognize the name of Illinois Senate candidate Barack Obama.

Great news! That's a significant number! Actions DO speak louder than propaganda!

Don't fear, the NAALCP and the RATS will bring back ads accusing Bush of dragging blacks to their death and burning down black churches and they will again vote 90% RAT.

I agree.

I think the more we can Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to make wilder and wilder accusations against an obviously Christian and morally strong President, the less credibility the Democrats have with the African American voters.

Jesse Jackson himself may be less popular than he was, but it looks like the whining culture of complaint that he's fostered throughout his career is still a winner.

A little reminder to black Mi. voters from February 7th 2004.

Confusion over the location of caucus sites in Detroit deterred people from voting and forced the state Democratic Party to extend polling hours in the city Saturday, angering Detroit voters and political leaders.

The Rev. Horace Sheffield III, who worked on the Rev. Al Sharpton’s campaign, said he was assembling a coalition to go to court to get a federal injunction to overturn the results of the caucuses, which gave U.S. Sen. John Kerry a commanding win. He said the voting problems depressed turnout in Detroit.

``The Michigan Democratic Party knows unequivocally that voters were disenfranchised in Detroit, Southfield and other areas,'' said Derrick Alpert, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party’s black caucus.

Ralph Nader has been a public figure for over thirty years, and this is the second time he will be on the ballot for president. Yet, almost one in three blacks "don't recognize the name." What's wrong with this picture?

I have only to look around my neighborhood and see that what were bookstores four years ago are dollar stores now and abandoned housing has increased. Yes urban America is worse off from four years ago.

This is not a sole problem amongst black people. Have you ever listened to Hannity's man on the street interviews? Lot of ignorant people out there - and they all can vote.

What I do find ridiculous are people who vote because a democrat deigns to set foot in one of their churches, but will do it because it's election time. How many black churches does Kerry attend while not on the campaign trail.

while among blacks over 50 the trend was the opposite

THis is key. Older voters are more likely to vote.
Up with black voters. Up with Jewish voters. Up with Catholics. It's looking good.

I'm curious as to the so-called "women's vote". I say so-called because the gender-gap breaks down when you factor out race. (In other words, the gender gap is actually the race gap, reorganized.)

The 'Rats are already circulating an ad that has a photo from the 1960s of police in Alabama using fire hoses on civil rights protestors, and claiming that the Republicans are planning to prevent blacks from voting this year. Fox news had a couple of congressmen on to discuss the ad--a black Democrat (from Maryland?) defended the ad as legitimate.

A few days ago I saw a black man (40-ish) wearing a Bush-Cheney T-shirt. A hopeful sign.

They believe this because they are told this by the likes of Jackson. The actual employment numbers show the polar opposite, from what I have seen.

(1) Bookstores (and music stores) are closing all over America - internet shopping is killing those retail businesses.

(2) It depends on where you live - abandoned urban housing does not really exist in New York City, for example. But in my state I see urban centers like Newark declining while I see others like Jersey City thriving and I see suburbs growing.

I think that Kerry has a 'PLAN' to fix this too. He will shortly unleash our country's FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT to again bring those few blacks that have defected to President Bush 'back in the fold'. Expect to see Slick a LOT in areas where he can ENERGIZE a black electorate that is not particularly passionate about Kerry.

I hate to say it, but this PLAN probably WILL energize some of the black vote--and will buy him a few more points of support too!!

We all know how the black community feels about its FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT!

This was being reported in the MSM yesterday as "Kerry has almost as many black voters as Gore" instead of "Bush doubles his support among black voters." Go figure.

Now would be a great time for Condi, Colin and Rod to go on the capaign trail for Bush. Hit all those black churches in Florida.

That would really mess Kerry up.

As I recall it was local DemocRAT elected officials who ordered those tactics.

Yes, that's the irony, that the Democrats of 2004 are using the antics of earlier Democrats to scare their followers into blindly voting for them.

The Democrats were always the party of white supremacy...for generations they won elections in the South by scaring white voters with the bogey of black equality...then in the mid-1960s they turned on a dime and reversed the equation: now they scare black voters into voting for them with the bogey of what the Republicans want to do to them. Always the party of racism.

The collective memory of the American people is about three days (unless, of course, there is a good Jerry Springer show on)--so almost NO ONE will know or remember that. However, once Kerry brings out the "Big Dog" (Slick)--the black vote will once again be energized--as they follow his lead religiously (no pun intended) since he is proudly their FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT.

Kerry will be unleashing the BIG DOG shortly!!!

Oh puh-lease. You say that as if it is an issue unique to black people. Just last year a survey of college students showed 10% of them could not locate the United States on a map .....yeah, the United States of America. And go to any person on the street, of any race and ask them who the majority leader is. Or the minority leader. Or, as was shown again last year, who the vice-president of the US is (most did not know who Dick Cheney was ....hopefully more know him this year due to the election fervor).

Now, if general apathy and ignorance are rampant, how can you critic blacks for not knowing who Ralph Nader is? In my opinion Nader is a person in need of a life .....he is the paragon of 'liberal' plus much more. I doubt that even Ted Kennedy would want to be considered as liberal as Ralph. Personally the only thing that Nader has done that i consider worthwhile is the whole seatbelt law institution (after his book: "Unsafe At Any Speed"). Much of the rest has merely been the work of a liberal workaholic trying to turn this great nation into a socialist/enviromentalist/liberal cesspool.

Anyways, it all boils down to this. If the general population cannot name the Secretary of Defense, the Attorney General, and as of last year the freaking Vice-President, then how can you fault a group for not knowing who some over-zealous liberal (over-zealous even from liberal standards) is.

The only reason i even like Nader a bit is because he may very well help Bush out in some battle-ground states, and if this election is as close as some say it is then Nader will be doing a service. However i do not think knowing/not knowing Nader means a whole lot .....especially some people do not even know where to find their own nation on a map.

Oh puh-lease. You say that as if it is an issue unique to black people.

Here are some websites that indicate otherwise.

The first one stated, prior to the 2000 election, that Nader had "close to 100 percent name recognition."
(4th paragraph down.)

The second site, The Mason-Dixon Florida poll while unique to that state, showed that only 1% of voters did not recognize Nader's name.

While I concur that the state of education in this country is abominable, I think that, although the Black community doesn't have a monopoly on this point, it seems to be even more of a problem there than in the overall population.
