Biggest choke in sports history by the team with the biggest payroll in the biggest rivalry in sports. Needless to say it's a safe bet that George Steinbrenner is well on his way to insanity. Page 2 looks inside Steinbrenner's head to find out just how far along he is:

Who could feel sorry for the Yankees and their fans after all the success they enjoyed? Deal with it, George.

As a relatively disinterested Mets fan, I must point out that all the way back in Spring Training, the Yankees' central worry was their October pitching. And that's what bit them in the butt last night.
I saw on TV that George sprained his arm and is having trouble writing checks. :)

A-Rod and Kevin Brown did nothing for the Yankees in the Red Sox series.
If Steinbrenner were to do something that foolish, I'm sure the Mets would be glad to hire Torre.
Not true. AROD had a decent series, batting about .300 with 2 HR and 7 RBIs or so. Brown on the other hand was total garbage. He's on the boss's short list of players to kick to the curb (if anyone would ever take his contract).
Some folks may agree with that statement. I don't. Need I remind people.

The New York Yankees are the most successful sports team/franchise in the history of sports. Boston deserves all the credit for coming back down three games to none and winning the series. But this is only one season.
The Yankees will be back and they will be champs again. Btw, George Steinbrenner is a great owner. He has put together some of the best teams in baseball history. Look for the Yanks to pick up at least two quality starters for next season.
Joe Torre is a class act and an example of how to manage in times of crisis. He's brought Steinbrenner three championships, took a relatively weak Yankee team to a 4th series in 2001 and lost to a team with Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, both players he made major efforts to obtain in later years, and a series against a Marlins team with hot pitching.
He's a whiney spoiled little boy who thinks that the Series belongs to him. Cashman and Torre should tell him to stick his job up his ass. Several teams would take those guys in a heartbeat. George went out and pissed away major money as well as his farm system and really, it looks bleak for them in the upcoming years.
Not likely....he's just about stuck at $200 million next year in payroll, he's in major luxury tax bracket and with baseball's socialistic policies, he has to revenue share.
He wants:
Beltran, Richie Sexton, Mike Lowell, Carl Pavano and Brad Radke. Signing even 3 of these guys means another $30-35 million and at some point, the dam breaks. Plus, signing free agents means you lose your first round draft picks which that farm system cannot afford to lose.
They won in the 90's with home grown talent. The free agents have helped but not won them a championship. Now they are stuck with Brown (trade), Giambi, Musina, Sheffield, A-Rod and Jeter contracts. Still good players but untradeable.
And then you can wait 1/2 a season or so for him to RE-hire Torre. Then he'll fire him again, then he'll RE-re-hire him.
It's the way the worlds biggest jack@ss (a.k.a. Steinbrenner) does things.
The with exception of the Red Sox, the Yankees have had the luxury of being in a very weak divsion, that has allowed them to get away with weak pitching. With a pitching staff whose average age is around 38, the Yankees are at a point they can no longer obtain quick fixes.
Um, no, you DON'T need to remind anyone. One of the reasons people dislike the Yankees, and even more so, their fans, is because of their tendency to "remind" everyone of their past success.
Besides, if the Yankees had won every World Series since the dawn of time, it wouldn't change the fact that they CHOKED, BIG TIME! Their 26 World Series and 39 pennants don't erase that reality. They blew what up until last night had been an insurmountable lead.
But that's what you get when you spend $190 million on a bunch of all-stars who are far more interested in their own incomes, careers, and images, than they are in being part of a team. Money can buy you talent (and lots of drooling, fist-pumping morons in the stands), but it can't buy you heart.
