Kerry wanted to ban the TV show COPS.
Federal News Service -- HEARING OF THE SENATE COMMERCE, SCIENCE AND TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE -- L/N | OCTOBER 20, 1993 | John Kerry

Posted on 10/21/2004 2:11:32 PM PDT by TFine80

SEN. KERRY: Now, you know, here in Washington, if Jay Leno isn't working for you, you can switch quickly over to -- I think it's Channel 5 -- and pick up cops running around with people at night, you know, intruding into homes, arresting, people crying, all these kinds of things that seem to titillate. Why are our cops being allowed to do that? I mean, there is an amazing amount of cooperation in the making of that. Why, if it is not good, are they permitted to allow these people to follow them into the homes and everywhere else?

ATTY GEN. RENO: That's one of the first issues I addressed when I took office because I had made it a practice to avoid such situations like that in Miami and I've taken steps to try to make sure that the department complies with the thought that police should not be -- or at least agents of the department should not be involved in such efforts.

SEN. KERRY: I know you can't mandate it with respect to all local police, et cetera, but have you taken some kind of step with the Police Chiefs Association and others around the country?

I don't know why Kerry would be shocked-it would've looked like a typical weekend in the Kennedy compound.

One of my favorite shows... I went to college in Boston and from 2-4 am one of the local networks played 4 episodes of COPS in a row.

Kerry's a schmuck. Many Cops like this show so people understand what they are about and how they work. And to show that crime is a real problem.

Cops shouldn't be going into people's houses with cameras in tow. Camera showed up in my house at the very least there would be an expensive pile of junk on the floor.

Yeah, and missing 2 front teeth, OR has a cigarette in his mouth, OR has a beer in one hand.

Funny email:

Bill, Hillary and Kerry are flying on Kerry’s wife’s private jet.

Bill Looks out the window, chuckles and says, “You know, I could throw a $100.00 bill out the window right now and make
some poor slob very happy.”

Hillary shrugs her shoulders and says, “Well, I could throw ten $10.00 bills out the window and make 10 people very
happy.”

Kerry says, “Of course then, I could throw one-hundred $1.00 bills out the window and make a hundred people very happy.”

The pilot rolls her eyes, looks at all of them and says to the co-pilot, “Such big shots back there… I could throw all of them
out the window and make millions of people very happy.”

I'm sure they do. But even more important, they should need your permission to come in with people who are not cops.

"Excuse me, sir? Yessir, we're going to break down your door in five minutes and we need your permission to let the cameraman come in with us..."

Now that I think about it, I'll bet it works like this: The cameras come in anyway and they shoot their film. Afterward, the white trash that gets busted is too stupid to know he could sue the show for trespassing and whatever else - so it never occurs to him. After the dude is booked and released the show contacts him to (a) get releases (for both use of the film and future litigation connected with the filming) and (b) give him a few hundred bucks to buy beer and wife-beater t-shirts.

Same here. The stupidity of criminals never ceases to amaze me.

My favorite is the guy who swore up and down that he doesn't smoke marijuana till the cop pointed out that he had a joint behind his ear.

Well, I guess THAT explains a lot. Too bad Dave Barry is taking it easy. He would have a field day with that one.

The cameraman enters the home of suspects under guise of color of authority. I wonder if the producer offers cash to the homeowner to show the video.

You'd think at one time it would have been unconstitutional, but hell, I watched a LAPD episode on Reality TV where a druggie was cited for having a "hardened front door" which wouldn't allow police easy entry. Go figure.

It's Kerry's base that is shown on Cops.

If they would only go out recording people in the urban areas of Ohio and Florida on Nov 2, they would have probably have material enough to last through 2005, what with all the vote fraud and intimmidation and all.

I liked it a lot better before they started doing prostitution entrapments every week with smug cops acting like they're TV comics.

BTW-Everything Reno ever did in Miami has been discredited. Yet, she still cites her service there! Just goes to show that she really is as delusional as we all suspected.

I'm sure that's exactly what happens. But it's wrong - the cameraman is clearly trespassing. Depending on where you are, most homeowners can eject trespassers with force. You'd think at one time it would have been unconstitutional, but hell, I watched a LAPD episode on Reality TV where a druggie was cited for having a "hardened front door" which wouldn't allow police easy entry. Go figure.

I know - in either L.A. or L.A. County it is illegal to have armored doors. Clearly wrong since any door the cops can break down a criminal can also break down. I think as a matter of practice they only enforce it against drug houses - kind of like getting Capone for tax evasion.

People like Kerry want you to forget about crime. Its just a nuisance, ya' know. They deny that gangs are a problem and call them social clubs. They want you to turn in your guns so that only social clubs have guns. Don't worry be happy.

Though I haven't seen an episode of Cops filmed in Utah, if I found myself in that situation, I'd tell the cameraman he's trespassing, and should he not vacate the property (not even the house) immediately, I'd notify an officer that a crime is being committed. That's the calm solution, and I'm sure the kinds of folks they show on the program are either not in a state of mind to do such, or have no idea that they have certain rights. Makes one wonder just what ends up on the cutting room floor.

If Bubba finds out Kerry would ban "Cops", he's toast. "Cops" is to the battleground states, as "The Rocky Mountain Horror Show is to Druggies." Spread this to every nook and valley!! The only thing worse would be Kerry wanting to ban beer and 4 wheelers.

I'm sure they would make an exception for a non-drug house if you annoyed them. Thats the problem when everything is against the law and those laws are selectively enforced.

See for example the asset forfeiture laws. In this case it isn't whether you annoy them, only whether they like your assets enough to take them.

I've heard people say things like "get that camera out of here" and the cops did nothing - but that might have been 'on the street' where a cameraman can certainly be with or without objection by the alleged perp. In my house the cameraman would get precisely one request before his expensive camera was trashed. I seriously doubt they could do anything about it.

I know - asset forfeiture sucks. I heard about some guy who had tens of thousands of dollars on him - but no contraband of any kind. They confiscated his money and demanded that he prove that it was earned legitimately. WTF? I'm not allowed to have scads of cash on me? I can understand failure to declare at the border or similar - but this was on an American street.
