WASHINGTON (AP) -- John Hinckley Jr., who tried to assassinate President Reagan in 1981, is seeking five-day, unsupervised visits with his parents at their home in Virginia.
Late last year, U.S. District Judge Paul L. Friedman granted Hinckley shorter visits, limited to the Washington area, with his elderly parents.
Hinckley, who has lived at St. Elizabeths psychiatric hospital in Washington since he was acquitted in 1982 by reason of insanity, now wants to expand those visits to five-day trips every two weeks to Williamsburg, Va., about three hours south of the nation's capital.
The judge denied a similar request by Hinckley in his ruling last year.
In a recent court filing, Hinckley's lawyers argued the visits would pose no danger to Hinckley or others and that they would "further the therapeutic goal of reintegrating" him into society.
"Because Mr. Hinckley ultimately seeks to reside on a permanent basis with his parents at their residence at some point in the future, it is important to start this transition and allow Mr. Hinckley to begin to integrate himself into that community," his attorneys wrote.
The judge has set a Nov. 8 hearing on the motion, which prosecutors will contest. "We do intend to oppose the request," Channing Phillips, chief of staff of the U.S. attorney's office, said Wednesday.
According to the filing, Hinckley has taken six day visits and one of two permitted overnight visits in the Washington area since the judge's ruling on Dec. 17, 2003, that allowed the unsupervised trips with his parents.
His lawyers say Hinckley has visited a number of restaurants, malls, museums and a movie theater. He also stayed overnight at a hotel.
All of the trips, the court papers say, have been without incident.
"Mr. Hinckley's psychiatric condition has remained stable, and there have been no indications of narcissistic or attention-seeking behaviors," the filing said.
While the trips have taken place off hospital grounds without supervision by medical staff, they have all been conducted under the watchful eye of Secret Service.
Hinckley, 49, was acquitted in the shootings of Reagan and three others outside a Washington hotel in March 1981.
Reagan was nearly killed; press secretary James Brady was permanently disabled. The shooting was said to be an attempt by Hinckley to impress actress Jodie Foster.
The Reagan family and others strongly objected to Friedman's ruling last year granting the unsupervised visits, and government lawyers insisted Hinckley remained a threat.
The judge ruled that "under appropriate conditions" Hinckley would not be a danger to himself or others.
hmmm
get out in time to go after "W"?
programmed?
whats the little bastard want ?..2 weeks at Club Med ?
Does he still have his fetish for Jodie Foster?
Is Jodie Foster still single?
He should shut up and be thankful for still breathing air.
Maybe we should unleash Hinkley while sKerry is comparing himself to President Reagan...
I say let the guy out so he can walk around free on the streets......of Fallujah.
I don't get five consecutive days away from the damn office, and he wants a vacation every two weeks from the looney bin! Damn!
"Does he still have his fetish for Jodie Foster?"
His doctors confirm that he wants to stalk and kill Jodie Foster. But that's considered healthy for anybody who sat through NELL.
Someone should write him and tell him that Kerry is sleeping with Jody Foster.
In the mid 80s, he was supposedly rid of it. Then in the late 80s, they found secret writings that proved that he wasn't.
By the mid 90s, he was again cleared of his obsession with her, and he even had a steady girlfriend who was also a patient at his facility (I believe she was an abused child who lashed out and killed someone? She only had one arm, I know that much.)
Hey if Al Gore can get out as much as he is why not
Well, OK, put him in the pen with the GP. I'm sure somebody will think he's just as pretty as Jodie Foster.
LOL ....good un
So far as I know she's still single but then I thought she was a lesbian...
bull-pucky!
He needs to remain in the psych ward and not loose.
I don't want him INTEGRATED into society. I want him locked away forever.
This person has a fixation, which I doubt is entirely tied to Jodie Foster. I don't trust him to be on the streets. NO one is safe with him loose. HIs elderly parents cannot control him, and I am not sure they are not also in harm's way.
Nah, just tell him rumor has Kerry and Foster doing the nasty...
One day...he will simply walk away. And you will never see the little idiot again. Maybe a good thing...but I doubt that he is really cured.
He was too sick to go to jail, so they put him in the looney bin. If he's "all better" now, then he needs to go to jail, not get out. This country is doomed, which I'm quite certain is the plan.
Psst Ron Reagan works for MSNBC.
It was a Bush who would have been President if he had succeeded. He knew the Bush family. I doubt that he would want to ever harm one.
LOL, That would work too!
