The Oscars: Giving Best-Picture Nod to 'The Passion of the Christ is Almost...

Unthinkable, say Industry Insiders

There's a Lot of Animosity Toward This Film That Is Very Real,' says One Oscar-Campaign Vet;

but Snub Could Lead to Boycott of Awards

Most Believe 'Fahrenheit' Nomination Tied to the Election

NEW YORK, Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite shattering box-office records and dominating headlines for months, "The Passion of the Christ" and "Fahrenheit 9/11" face real obstacles in the race for an Oscar nomination for best picture. As Senior Writer Sean Smith reports in the current issue of Newsweek, many of the high-placed studio executives, producers, Oscar strategists, publicists and Academy members interviewed think that "Fahrenheit's" chances depend on the results of the presidential election, and all say that a "Passion" best-picture nod is almost unthinkable.

"A lot of older Academy voters, who are largely Jewish, refuse to even see this movie," says one Oscar-campaign vet. "There's a level of animosity toward this film that is very real. When I talk to the members, I hear it over and over and over again." Complicating matters, says one exec, is the sense, fair or not, that Mel Gibson marketed the film as something Hollywood couldn't, or wouldn't, make. "It's a little weird to trash the establishment, and then to come knocking at the establishment's door during awards season."

But if "The Passion" gets shut out, there's a concern that some Christians could protest and -- worst-case scenario -- boycott the Oscars. "The born- agains will come out screaming that it's another case of censorship," says one source. "The whole Sodom and Gomorrah thing about Hollywood will come up again."

Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit" faces an entirely different problem, Smith reports in the October 25 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, October 18). Most insiders believe its fate is inextricably tied to the election -- but they can't agree on whether a Bush or a Kerry win helps Moore the most. If John Kerry wins, 'Fahrenheit' gets nominated," says one exec. "Then it becomes 'the movie that changed the course of American history," and the perception will be that Moore contributed to Bush's loss." Or not. "Its chances are zero if Kerry wins, because then the protest is over and everybody feels better," says another source. And, says one Academy member, "If Kerry loses, it gets nominated as a big 'f--- you' to Bush."

If I ever watched the Oscars, it was one time (and, I'm not even sure about that). I guess intentional ignorance is not a noble goal, but I try my best to not even know the winners or even nominees. I'll keep one eye on it this time to monitor the situation with the Passion and F911, but I'll do it half-heartedly.

Whatever happened to free speech, even speech you abhor? Oh, I forgot....the 1st Amendment applies only to liberals' speech (snicker). Christians need not apply.

"The Passion" snub is so neat in the way it unmasks the hypocrisy and depravity of Hollywarped liberals.

The same secular Hollyweirdos who went ballistic when "The Passion" became a blockbuster are the self-same individuals who respond to concerns about Follywood's sexually salacious and gratuitously violent output by saying. "It's only a movie (or TV show)."

Hollywarped lefties want us to believe that 24/7 of sexed-up violent TV, movies and music lyrics are not harming kids and not doing irreparable harm to our culture.

Yet these same depraved lefties believe----with the religious fervor of a Tammy Faye Baker---- that a single 15 sec commercial will compel tens of millions of Americans into thousands of stores to buy billions of dollars worth of soap, soup, breakfast cereal and cars.

They can't have it both ways.

The Passion of Christ, the politics, and the nominations aside, can anyone with half a brain even stand to watch 5 minutes of that drivel. It's a gathering of half-witted, self important, self absorbed, overly pampered, and over paid lemmings how honestly believe what they do is socially redeeming. Just listening to their idiotic thank you speeches is nauseating.

Boycott a spectacle made up of marxists using the tools of capitalism to wage war against the very same economic system by which they became wealthy.....beyond reason!!!.

Kerry and Follywood.....perfect together.

IMO, Kerry's biggest mistake, to date, was his negative comments on the blockbuster Passion movie. Kerry said that he was "unsure" about it (Reuters, "Democrat Kerry Urges Caution on 'Passion,' 26 February 2004, by Patricia Wilson). "I don't know," Kerry said when asked if he would see the Mel Gibson film Christians flocked to see.

As a presidential candidate, Kerry's comments are loaded with meaning for the future of America. Kerry's ill-conceived remarks are an unspoken message to believers that Kerry will strengthen secularists power over believers. Kerry's comments are an elitist attack on believers.

Kerry praised foul-mouthed Whoppi Goldberg and went to Hollywood for votes and donations. It's clear Kerry, Hollyweirdos and Dumbocrats are in league against believers, and stand for everything Christians abhor: They worship abortion, the homosexual agenda, and the stripping away of every Christian symbol in America.

By bashing The Passion, Kerry is pandering to Hollywood secularists. In return, Kerry assures religious-hating Hollywood that a Kerry presidency will strengthen Hollywood's chokehold on American culture.

Candidates igonore Christians concerns at their peril. Kerry's comments and his positions on social issues must reach every Christian pastor, church, and group in America. These are the things Christian voters should talk about:

(1) Kerry's comments about The Passion have effectively disqualified him from holding the highest office in Christian America.

(2) Transparently anti-religious candidates do not deserve Christian votes.

(3) Candidates carrying Bibles and going to church (the Clintons) but who vote against everything Christians believe in will not fool Christians.

(4) Protecting the unborn, the sacredness of marriage, and restoring Christian symbols in American culture are very important matters believers want addressed.

Kerry kneels in obeisance to the small cadre of Hollywarped Christian haters who despise everything Christians stand for.

The future of America depends on putting into office the candidate who supports a Christian-based culture.

I've seen the film and the Oscar (considering the source) is unworthy of it. In the unlikely event that one is offered, Gibson should refuse it.

If Kerry wins we will have a lot more to worry about than what picture wins a stupid oscar.

Then the putrid old moldy bigots shouldn't be "Academy voters", huh?

If it gets the nomination, we should appeal to Gibson to withdraw it from the list.

I'm sure it will be nominated, because the controversy would help Oscar ratings. Then the Spielbergs could start bashing it all over again.

Withdraw from the list, and let the ceremony sink into the ratings swamp.

BTW--when do we know whether or not the Passion has been snubbed?

I know how to triangulate this--if they snub the Passion in the noms, boycott them. If they nominate it, petition Gibson to withdraw it from the running.

I love a lose-lose when it's the raving liberals doing the losing.

Hard to believe Passion was envisioned as just an art house film that never was supposed to make any money.
