Subject: A Student discusses the Vote

I am teaching an online journalism course this Fall (Sussex County Community
College - Newton, NJ -- a very rural county in NJ). Politics is a hot issue.
Students are different from the normal population -- at least the way I view
them. I was most impressed with the following editorial(student paper) that
went to press today.. Maybe you'll find it enlightening too. It is FUNNY
FUNNY FUNNY and quite introspective as well. I am thinking some of her
closing argument is tongue in cheek - and if she really came out and said
she favored Bush - on a college campus - she might be pummelled to the
ground. Depending on the perspective (young inexperienced voters), Bush may
not be the best choice of all the "wished for" possibilites. But there comes
a time when there are really only two choices in a Presidential election.
Sometimes, like in real life, and in business and in every venture known to
mankind ... you need to make a choice for the least worst option.  So, maybe
yet, I can convince her to vote. From this, I discern her logic moving in
the right direction.  But, here .... enjoy a well written observation by one
young potential voter.

How the Media Bias Influences Youth Voters
Rock Against Voting
An Editorial   By Erin Bruno

In the 2000 Presidential election, only 7.8% of voters were age 18 to 24
versus 20% age 65 and over. But this year, Business Week is predicting 17%
of potential voters will be 25 and under. Why the increase in young voters?
Turn on the television, open up your mail, go to the movies, and magically
you will become inspired to vote even though you have no interest in
politics whatsoever. Over the past few months I have been inundated from
every direction to VOTE VOTE VOTE!!! As an 18-24 year old, apparently, my
vote is vitally important in this year's election in the eyes of the
liberal/money hungry driven media.

Reading my monthly issue of Rolling Stone Magazine has become increasingly
painful, as each month more and more anti-Bush sentiment inundates the
magazine's pages. And at the head of this anti-Bush sentiment is the
paradigm of liberal bias, none other than pigheaded bullshiter Michael
Moore, who Rolling Stone has declared King in their "hate bush" movement.
Rolling Stone began by disgracing their September issue cover with Moore's
picture and featuring him in several feature articles. In his September
issue interview Moore said, "Kerry is not the lesser of two evils," which I
found interesting myself considering how determined he is to unseat Bush. So
if Kerry is not the lesser of two evils and Bush is absolutely the worst
American for president, whom am I supposed to vote for Mr. Moore? You?
In the October Issue Rolling Stone gave their majesty, King Moore a well
deserved two page spread advertising the DVD release of his hit movie that
earned $100 million at the box office, Fahrenheit 9/11. The spread included
some of the following bold lettered comments: "Excellent" ~The Los Angeles
Times, "Compelling," ~USA Today "Two Thumbs Way Up" ~Ebert and Roeper
"Scorching," ~The New York Times "Fascinating," ~Time Magazine. I must have
missed something when I watched the movie this summer the night it opened in
theaters. All I remember was an uproar of laughter echoing throughout the
packed theater as I watched Moore use lies, bias and smart film work to
deceive an entire audience and even more so an entire nation of the truth.
First of all let me begin by saying, Fahrenheit 9/11 is in no shape or form
a documentary; it is nothing more than foolish left wing propaganda. A
documentary implies fact, not fiction.  The facts themselves should tell the
story not the storyteller. Moore manipulates factual events, using
voiceovers and sub-captions, to sway the audience in opposition of George W.
Bush and the Republican Party. Not once in the entirety of the film, is
there a positive interview clip of a Republican; Democratic members are seen
again and again, portrayed as the only hope for America by way of Moore's
crafty film work.  Moore gets away with his lies because he is a talented
filmmaker, but that does not mean he is a documentarian. In Fahrenheit 9/11,
the actual events of September 11th are discussed briefly in the beginning
of the film only when blaming George W. Bush for 9/11, which let me say is
as accurate as blaming Michael Moore for 9/11. The majority of the film went
on to rip apart every aspect of Bush over the past four years, beginning
with the Florida fiasco, where according to Democrats nation-wide, "Bush
didn't even win the election." Four years later they are still talking about
how Bush shouldn't have been president in the first place; I would say get
over it but it's no use since they're already creating a self-fulfilling
prophecy, headed by Moore who says in the September issue of Rolling Stone
that he has cameras ready to go to Florida "just in case" the same thing
happens again.

All right, so Fahrenheit 9/11 was humorous at times and Moore knows how to
direct, so what? Moore isn't just making a film, he is deliberately trying
to sway as many voters as possible, specifically undecided and 18-24 year
old voters to not only vote against George W. Bush, but to hate him as well.
And since when was hate so uplifting and patriotic?
Along with Moore's DVD release spread, Rolling Stone also featured "Voices
for Change," an article which highlights some of country's top artists, such
as Bruce Springsteen, Chuck D of Public Enemy, Adam Levine of Maroon Five,
and the list goes on, representing the new, hip "rock against bush" trend. I
found one quote in the article in particular that is truly the essence of
how people like Michael Moore in the media, influence other aspects of the
media, such as music, which all in turn bias the nation's youth vote.
"We've found that kids mostly care about the economy. I talked to this one
kid in North Carolina who works at Kentucky Fried Chicken. He heard Michael
Moore mentioned in one of our songs, so he went out and saw Fahrenheit 9/11
and got the entire work crew at KFC to register to vote. That is grass
roots- you touch a few people, and then they touch a few people. It keeps me
going," said Fat Mike of the band NOFX who, along with other whining punk
bands, put out a CD actually titled, Rock Against Bush.

"Alabama Getaway" is the final article I read before canceling my
subscription to Rolling Stone.  The article featured a picture of Bush
"enjoying a drink or two with his prep-school buddies," and makes Bush out
to be a raging alcoholic who skipped out on Vietnam to party. Like Kerry
never drank before? He probably used Vietnam as an excuse to drink more.
Hell, most of the people reading Rolling Stone were probably drunk
themselves. After all, this is America, the home of the free and the wasted.
Finally in the parade of the media vote frenzy comes good old MTV. A few
nights ago, while watching a program on MTV how teens abuse the drug
adderall; the following message came on the screen: "We interrupt regularly
scheduled program" and then Tony Hawk appeared, ratty tee shirt and all
sitting at a desk telling me to get out there and vote in his skater "dude"
vernacular. Then the screen went back to 18-24 college students cutting
lines with their Discover credit cards. I'm sure they can vote even better
on speed, MTV!

But that is not nearly enough to encourage me to be apart of the
purely joyfully patriotic voting process they have to give Drew Barrymore
her own show, "The Best Place to Start," in which Barrymore "wants answers"
so she magically becomes a journalist for a day to find out why young people
don't vote. Interviewing sugar coated politician Hillary Clinton, Clinton
explains basically how politicians don't care about youth issues because in
the past the youth vote represents a small majority. A little later

Barrymore starts crying over how young people don't vote, at which point I
turned off the TV. Recently on the MTV website I came across a new voting
special, hosted by "dirty" Christina Aguileria called, "Sex, Votes and
Higher Power." Well I will say sex is definitely one subject Aguileria is
equipped to "like totally" talk about, but politics? Let's just say I won't
even bother watching that one.

Along with their annoying commercials and whining specials, MTV
advertises various Youth Voting programs, that multiple by the day, such as
their very own Choose or Lose, along with Rock the Vote, Hip Hop Action
Summit, New Voters Project, Project Vote Smart, Declare Yourself, Smackdown
Your Vote, and Voto Latino. Although these are a more sensible approach to
encourage young and undecided voters to vote, it still represents a money,
conformist driven frenzy.

As both an 18-24 year old and undecided voter, I have been discouraged by
the media's absurd, over the top antics, and manipulative devices, along
with their completely moronic and/or biased string of celebrities being paid
to tell me to vote, and even more so who to vote for. Why isn't the media
calling out to the youth for other purposes? The youth could make a lot more
difference in this country, than just by simply voting. So I vote. Then,
like most my age, I sit on my ass the rest of the year. What good will that
do the country? This country needs the youth to volunteer more than to vote.
I will not vote in this election. Why? Because, I am not going to vote
because someone tells me to vote. Not voting is a choice also. Why go along
with the herd? I will vote when I want to vote. And although I may be titled
part of this country's "apathetic youth," I however do find an interest in
politics. I watched the first presidential debate, which proved, in my
opinion, that neither candidate is a good choice for President. While I
admire Bush's honesty and steadfast opinions and I am extremely against the
Rock Against Bush trend being forced fed to my generation, he still doesn't
seem like the smartest/best guy for the job. And although perhaps Kerry is a
better public speaker than Bush, Kerry doesn't seem much more intelligent
than Bush, as he contradicts himself every second, and doesn't come off as
trustworthy. But what do I know?  I guess I'm just the spokesperson of my
own trend, Rock Against Voting.

I challenged my children to get the facts on both candidates and then tell who you are gonna vote for.

My son is sticking with Kerry and Punk the Vote.

My daughter is now not voting for Kerry but may not vote for Bush either.

My daughters boyfriend who also was going to vote for Kerry is now going to vote Bush and join the JAG program upon his graduation from Law school next year.

I dont force my opinions upon my children but if they are gonna vote I do push them to get the facts of their accomplishments and not the Election spin.

It's good that these kids are interested early. I voted for Clinton when I was 18... then I grew up. BTW... Rock the Vote and the other get out the youth vote efforts where prevalent then too.

It the Churchillian philosophy at work. If you're not a liberal when your 20 you might not have a heart, however if you are still a liberal when you're 40 you definitely don't have a brain.

The problem is that given the magnitude of the peril, we don't have the luxury of time for Churchill's schedule to play out.

The left is exploiting churchill's timetable, MTV and the tabula rasa of youth: Getting the youth vote is like taking candy from a baby, that is, if you can get them to the polls.

I hope this stops the young MTVer vegans in their tracks - he shot Woody, the Lab!

Pee Daddy was on MTV/VH1/CMT/Nickelodeon this morning, race baiting, pointing to poor blacks as he drove through the ghetto in his Bentley, saying that these were the first ones to go to war because THEY'RE POOR.

If only he'd give them a few bucks, then they wouldn't be put on the front lines?

It's all about emotion, not logic.

Vote or Die? I agree but only vote if you're going to vote Republican.

He's got it in his head that Bush is a bad President because of what he's read from Punk the vote, even though I showed him how it is the Dems who were trying to play the DRAFT Card.

Like I said I don't impose my vote on my family and I am glad he is taking the responsibility to vote no matter the candidate.

It's a responsibility too many have forgotten and to others it's just a JOB paid for with petty cash, drugs, drinks or smokes (and according to Rolling Stone Mag paid for even with sex).

I find it reprehensible that thinking you might be called upon to serve your country in the military is something BAD.

As far as VOTE OR DIE......I was recently visiting Cincinnati and walked into a large department store and there was this huge T shirt staring me in the face first thing. VOTE OR DIE

I asked for the manager, told her I had no objection to them selling the shirts but I did NOT want to see that as the first item when I walked into their store.

They put the shirt towards the back of the rack, thanked me, and gave me a 15% off coupon for any purchases made that day.

Not voting is even worse!

The more people who start voting means the more people willing to look at the issues.

You can't set up a Global Test of which Americans can or can not be allowed to vote.

I rather have 80% of America voting than the current 50%, even if that means a Kerry Presidency.

If he does a bad job, in four years he's out. If not he get's another 4 years. It's the American way and I'm OK with that.

The store manager was very apologetic and she knew exactly what the shirt was all about. I give her credit because Cincinnati is a city in constant turmoil as to race relations.

You have my deepest sympathy. IMHO you could not be more wrong.

Frankly, you are risking the lives of all of us in general and those in the miliatry in particular. So I guess the folks in the armed services don't matter to you. Clearly you don't plan on serving or having anyone in your family serve in the armed forces either.

Some people thought that Clinton was an accident (a Ross Perot blip) and he'd be gone in four, too.

And then Gore lost by such a small margin . . .

All I can hope for is that the MTVers are so bored by all the Vote or Die malarkey interrupting their videos day in and day out that they just won't bother.

Not voting is what I hope the undecided do, as well as the Kerry lovers. And there IS hope for that. After all, Ben Affleck was so busy stumping for Gore that he just didn't have time to vote.

Rock on.
