Kerry, Salazar to campaign together in Pueblo

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry is planning his sixth visit to Colorado, this time to hold a rally in Pueblo on Saturday with Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Ken Salazar. It will be the first appearance together for Kerry and Salazar. The failure of the two to campaign together has been questioned by Republicans.

Political experts say Salazar has been better off going it alone in a state where Republicans and unaffiliated voters each outnumber Democrats.

President Bush has campaigned several times with Salazar's Republican rival, Pete Coors, and held a fundraiser.

Salazar's spokesman, Cody Wertz, said this is the first time the two men could work it into their schedules.

"We've had things planned well in advance. Now it works out," Wertz said.

Meanwhile, President Bush's twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara Bush, will attend a "W Stands for Woman Panel" on Tuesday at the University of Denver. The panel will include Colorado GOP Lt. Gov. Jane Norton.

A Bush campaign spokeswoman did not return calls for comment.

Pueblo has traditionally been the "blue collar" Democrat stronghold of CO, whereas Boulder and environs have been the "wine-and-cheese" Democrat bastion. Democrats usually lose in CO unless the GOP gets fearful and divided.

I watched Salazar introduce Kerry today and brag about his Silver Star, Bronze Star and 3 Purple Hearts and I almost vomited. Kerry is a FRAUD!

It makes sense to bring up Kerry's medals in Pueblo, since Pueblo prides itself on being home to several Congressional Medal of Honor winners.

That's what I'm trying to determine.

If Salazar were way ahead, he wouldn't appear with Kerry. If Kerry were far ahead, he'd be too full of himself to appear with a struggling Senatorial candidate.

Kerry wouldn't appear with Salazar unless he thought it would help him, which says something about how Kerry is polling since Salzar is not leading. But, I'm at a loss as to Salazar's reasoning unless he was pushed to accept Kerry. It may be an indication Dems are about to write off salazar.

How many people showed up in Pueblo? We needed to drive up to Sam's Club today but figured they would have traffic all screwed up so skipped it.

I don't know, as I just watched it on C-Span this morning while I was getting read for the rally.

I live in BUSH COUNTRY - Jacksonville, Florida, where President Bush appeared at our rally attended by 55,000 BUSH SUPPORTERS!

If they're writing off Salazar that's a rather dumb move. He's still close to Coors in the polls. On the other hand, Salazar is not proving to be the dynamo that Democrats thought he would be. Even his brother has seen his lead disappear in the polls in the race in Colorado's third congressional district.

Kerry is long gone in Colo. I could be wrong, but I think his is a sign that he knows he's going to lose, and they want to avoid losing too many senate seats.

My guess is that they got close to 10K at this rally. It was as big as Kerry rallies get but Kerry was his same old self & was mostly pure Bush bashing. Whenever he drifts and starts talking (rambling) about anything else he loses people (literally) and he goes back on the attack. This is the most vibrant audience I've seen him get at Pueblo. That said, compared to the Bush rallies, which now require stadiums and are still filling to capacities, it was pretty lame. My assessment was that both Salazar and Kerry are desperate, that Kerry is probably more desperate than Salazar at this point, even, and that was the reason they - for the first time - hooked up together on Saturday.
