This is the second major Libertarian player to strongly and powerfully endorse President Bush in two days. I am very heartened to see that there are libertarians who still have their whole brain available to think with. So often they start out with good arguments, but then fall short when they have to deal with reality. These two endorsements show that is not the only possibility, and gives me further hope for this country.

Now you know why I describe myself as a small-l libertarian with strong constitutionalist tendencies...

By the way, Dr. Hospers indicated that he'd never been here but had received information from FR from third parties before.

I sent him links to a couple of the more interesting comments in this thread tonight, and the URL where you register.

I, for one would welcome having someone of his intellectual timbre posting here.

Y'all, it's not a good idea (or good netiquette) to put someone's email address up on a website that gets archived by search engines and is therefore accessible to spambots. Or worse, the folks at DU, who have been known to send hate mail on special occasions.

I've requested that your posts be redacted to remove his information.

Badnarik, as a Libertarian, believes in the checks and balances of a free market economy.

Most Americans feel that way, and they aren't Libertarians. I know I'm not.

They succeeded in electing a liberal Senator in Washington state last election. The LP had a full court press on against the encumbant Republican; instead on putting their effort into local and state races they put it all into playing spoiler.

However, when he lumps Kerry with leftists like Clinton & Clinton, I must protest. Kerry is WAY left of anyone who ever was born in Arkansas. Kerry is a globalist in the sense that the Clintons could never approach. They are, as Ayn Rand would have it, pikers. People like Kerry are far, far more dangerous.

You would be, perhaps correct if you were describing only BJ, but remember, Herself was not an Arkansas native, but a Chicagoan, and no bumpkin. She is every bit as dangerous as Kerry, for the same reasons...

I am a lurker here.. I am a libertarian too like some in this thread. I was going to go Badnarik but I realized Bush did enough things I liked that I was going to vote for him. Namely the estate tax, and the marriage penalty.. removing those were the big things for me.

And as you guys know the presidency is so powerful at the moment, it doesn't seem like a good idea to throw away your vote to send a message.. when there is a lot of difference between Bush and Hanoi Kerry.

I still do plan to vote libertarian in local elections and state where the republican hasn't worked to limit the size of government though.

I believe, my friends, we are in a Cold Civil War with the Democrat party, which is now run by its lunatic, far-Left fringe.

Affirmative on that. There's an old Russian proverb that the good Lord puts each of us on beautiful Earth at a certain time and in a certain place to do His work. Probably most do not carry out this duty or are unable to do so because of circumstances. But for those of us who have been made free - because of the sacrifices of others - and able to do so, it is our task to struggle against manifest evil. The sinner can be forgiven - but not the sin.

The American electorate is not yet psychologically prepared for a completely libertarian society. A transition to such a society takes time and effort, and involves altering the mind-set of most Americans, who labor under a plethora of economic fallacies and political misconceptions. It will involve a near-total restructuring of the educational system, which today serves the liberal-left education bureaucracy and Democratic Party, not the student or parent. It will require a merciless and continuous expose of the bias in the mainstream media (the Internet, blogs, and talk radio have been extremely successful in this regard over the past few years). And it will require understanding the influence and importance of the Teresa Kerry-like Foundations who work in the shadows to undermine our constitutional system of checks and balances.

Most of all, it will require the American people -- including many libertarians – to realize the overwhelming dangerousness of the American Left – a Fifth Column comprised of the elements mentioned above, dedicated to achieving their goal of a totally internationally dominated America, and a true world-wide Fascism.

A refreshing analysis from a man from a time past - back when the Libertarian Party made sense and was pragmatic instead of purist.

Hospers has his head firmly attached to his shoulders, unlike some of the other nutbags who refuse to see reality.

The truth is that if the Libertarian Party is to succeed, its going to have to be from the ground up, which means local offices, then Congress, and then the biggie. The only thing the Libertarian Party accomplishes by fighting Bush is to piss off the libertarian Republicans who could be future allies.

he Libertarian will not strike first when he knows a fist is coming at his face? Will a Libertarian shoot first if someone points a loaded pistol at him and knows they are going to pull the trigger?

The libertarian as envisioned by the party's founder Hopkins (and his ideological model Ayn Rand) would certain react with pre-emption when faced with an imminent attack. Today's Libertarian Party, however, is being run by people who are so pacifistic that they would not even dare to use force reactively, let alone pro-actively.

Ayn Rand on the use of force:

"Dictatorship nations are outlaws. Any free nation had the right to invade Nazi Germany and, today, has the right to invade Soviet Russia, Cuba or any other slave pen. Whether a free nation chooses to do so or not is a matter of its own self-interest, not of respect for the non-existent "rights" of gang rulers. It is not a free nation's duty to liberate other nations at the price of self-sacrifice, but a free nation has the right to do it, when and if it so chooses."

"A slave nation has no national rights, but the individual rights of its citizens remain valid, even if unrecognized, and the conqueror has no right to violate them. Therefore, the invasion of an enslaved country is morally justified only when and if the conquerors establish a free social system, that is, a system based on the recognition of individual rights."

Who'd have thunk it? GWB is a Randian... :)

All they seem to do is mumble about the Patriot Act. Yet NONE of them can say why they disagree with it in any detail.

I've got a few misgivings about the act myself, but still, it's a stupid reason to throw your vote away.
