Kristol: N.Y. Times and CBS 'Conspiring' With Kerry to Defeat Bush

What a treat on "Fox & Friends" this morning: William Kristol hammered the pro-Democrat New York Times and pro-Democrat CBS for "colluding" and "conspiring" with Sen. John Kerry to topple President Bush.
Even Kerry's own handlers now admit they have no proof to back up the issue the Democrats concocted with their media allies.
Kristol notes in his new column for Weekly Standard: "Pressed on Tuesday afternoon about the accuracy of the allegations on Fox's Big Story with John Gibson, Richard Holbrooke, a senior adviser to the Kerry campaign, said: 'You don't know the truth and I don't know the truth.' He later underscored this point: 'I don't know the truth.'
"That minor issue hasn't kept the Kerry campaign from creating a television ad based on what may well be untruthful claims. ... Shouldn't he at least make sure that such a charge is true?"
But in the Democrat playbook there's no entry for truth. The party's longtime strategy is to repeat a lie until people believe it. Thanks to their media collaborators, and President Bush's wimpy refusal to denounce the Times and "60 Minutes" and Kerry and John Edwards, the stunt could succeed.
At least a few voices are speaking out. "Kerry gins up his attack machine based on a flawed New York Times story," the Republican National Committee noted Tuesday.
Richard Lessner, executive director of American Conservative Union, blasted the story "a cheap, baseless and partisan hit-job on President Bush" and pointed out that "neither the Times nor CBS has much interest in reporting the facts."

It looks like all these wafflers like O'Reilly and Kristol (and others), are coming out of there Halloween costumes the final week and finally speaking what they believe instead of towing the Fox News line.

Good Morning,
"That minor issue hasn't kept the Kerry campaign from creating a television ad based on what may well be untruthful claims. ...
I wrote and complained, just to see what would happen. Here is the reply below.
Although the FCC licenses broadcast stations, we have virtually no control over the content of what they broadcast. That's because of the First Amendment's freedom of expression and the no-censorship provision of the Communications Act. Thus, we cannot tell stations what to air and what not to air. (A notable exception to that is obscenity and indecency, because the U.S. Supreme Court has held that obscenity is not protected speech under the First Amendment.) Consequently, in most cases, it is within the station's discretion to determine what it will air. A key exception to that is candidate advertisements. Section 315 of the Communications Act prohibits stations from censoring the content of candidate-provided programming. Therefore, both the FCC and the stations are without power to censor the content of candidates' advertising - even if the information included is false. Moreover, stations are forbidden from adding a disclaimer advising viewers of the falsity of such an ad.
Sincerely,
Mark Berlin

I remember in the O'Reilly interview Bill was pushing Bush to say something about the CBS debacle. Bush's response was something to the effect that he wasn't going to say anything, that he wasn't "foolish enough' to make an enemy of CBS in an election year.
Bush is probably playing a political game. Because I am sure he knows CBS is ALREADY the enemy.

See BS (Completely Biased Surrogates) needs to be intellectually honest and register as a 527. In fact, they may be breaking various laws with blatant influence peddling, fraudulent voter influence using false documents, and conspiracy under RICO laws. Can I get me a Texas Ranger?

This all started with an IAEA tip. But about them:
Duelfer also said U.N. weapons inspectors recommended in 1995 that the high explosives be destroyed because of their potential use in a nuclear weapons program. The International Atomic Energy Agency instead ordered the explosives stored in sealed bunkers 30 miles south of the Iraqi capital. The last time the IAEA verified that the bunkers were still sealed was in March of last year, about a month before the first U.S. troops moved into the complex as they pushed toward Baghdad.

Bush should run against CBS and the Times in these last few days. Everyone hates them. This would steal a page out of Kerry's playbook when in his race with Gov Weld in the last week started running against Newt Gingrich.

I agree. If Bush has to he will say something, but it's all of us and the talking heads that have been failing the President. Everyone but Bush should be calling for the NYT and CBS and Kerry to come clean on their lies. They should be pressed so hard that Kerry's got to pull the commercials. THAT WOULD BE THE BACKLASH WE WANT. IF KERRY HAD TO PULL THE COMMERCIALS. IT WOULD MAKE HEADLINES. THEN HE WOULD TAKE IT IN THE POLLS. PERHAPS THIS WEEKEND. Email everyone you know. Talk to everyone you know. Write letters to Newspapers, call talk radio, do everything you can. I am. This is where the hard work really begins. Throw your free time away for the next 6 days and work so hard your miserable. Email letters until your hands ache.
To: kattracks
Cheney needs to go unhinged on this story. This has to remain in the news for the next few days and the conservative commentators needs to keep making the point that this was just an October Suprise coming from the UN to hurt Bush.
To: kattracks
I watched Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai again. The themes of honor, courage, and basic human decency resonate as never before now when the once honorable Free Press, long the protector of representative government and guardian of truth, has sunk to previously unimaginable depths of immorality, dishonor, depravity, distortion, disinformation, depravity, lying, and corruption and has degenerated into nothing more than a ruthless propaganda machine.

I don't know why President Bush doesn't defend himself. It kind of dampens the enthusiam. I keep hoping the WH has an ace up the sleeve but I just don't know anymore. The polls are tightening, too. Kind of reflects the fact that the lies are taking off. Yesterday my son came over and he had heard about the missing weapons but he hadn't heard that they were already missing when the troops got there. If the WH doesn't respond, I'm afraid that is going to be the story that sticks. It looks like Rove would know the Dem strategy by now.

GWB doesn't have to go ballistic on this KerryNYTCBS silliness. (1) They are making GWB's case for going in: Iraq had stockpiles of dangerous weapons, many of which were being moved around, hidden, etc. It was right to invade, even if 1 percent of the stuff went missing --- so WHAT? This translates into an unwitting Kerry endorsement of the war! (2) The followup stories are making it clear that the Qaqaa explosives were likely gone when our soldiers got there. Factor in the indecency of Kerry chiding our brave troops who were doing a great job, don't we all agree. Ha! It's a winner for GWB.
