Just got an IM from my office over in Winston.
Per xxxx, Please be aware. Stay away from Hanes Mall (and the Hanes Mall area). A substance was sprayed there earlier that has made people sick. They have sealed off the mall. Also, there has been a bomb threat at the courthouse.

Someone went to the 2nd level balcony about 5 min. before the mall stores opened and sprayed some kind of substance, which caused burning eyes, throats.
Perp ran, Cops called, Mall sealed off. No bio agent, mall reopened. Reviewing mall security cams for a pic. of the perp.
Also, the Courthouse bomb scare was just that, nothing found. Probably some guy who didn't want to face a judge today.

Don't get too excited about the bomb threat though.... they get bomb threats all the time, pre and post 9/11, it's always just a threat.
Just the fact that a caller warned them to evacuate points to a hoax to cause fear - real terrorists would do everything possible to ensure casualties.
One possibility is the gas released when the janitor accidentally dumps too much bleach into the water, or combines bleach with an ammonia based cleaner. Can't count the number of times people forget bleach is chlorine (mustard gas) or the bleach-ammonia deadly combination.
Another possibility is the use of chemical agents in stripping the tile. Again the janitor forgot to ventilate the area.
Another possibility is that a floor service coated the wood in one of the department stores with a fresh coat of poly which required the use of a bonding agent instead of sanding the floor. I used a bonding substance called Wil-Bond on a floor once that released vapors that could knock a moose over in a heartbeat.
Just some amateur ideas on the cause that's not terror related...Funny how 9-11 changed how we see a half-wit janitor's bright idea of combining bleach and ammonia as a terror plot.
Chicago PD found a grenede on a propane tank somewhere around Midway Airport last night. No other info given, other than they blew it up to disarm it.

After much ado, the substance is usualy pepper spray.
they have sniffers that identify bad stuff pretty quickly....they are installed in LA and NYC downtown near the subway stops

The same thing happens if you poor bleach on urine -- because of the ammonia. I used to have to do this to do this to clean my kids' bathroom, then I'd shut the bathroom door and run for it. Ended up killing my Bamboo plant.

This is so weird... I just got back from early voting at the 201 Chestnut location downtown and a bunch of streets were blocked off. There were quite a few people who were kicked out of the courthouse, because of the threat, who used that time to vote;-) It has been blocked off for a while now.
