"The problem with offering a deal is I'm not sure he's interested in the kind of power that Appropriations would offer"

Are you kidding? He'd LOVE being Chairman of Appropriations---he'd be appropriating millions for the Arlen Specter Federal Courthouse in Philly and for million-dollar outhouses in state parks in PA. I think the biggest hurdles would be (i) Specter not wanting to wait two years, especially since he only has 6 years left in his Senate career (assuming he doesn't kick the bucket first, a distinct possibility that will allow Rendell to name his replacement), (ii) Chairman Stevens' not wanting to step down as Chairman, and (iii) younger, more conservative Senators on Appropriations objecting to the RINO Specter becoming Chairman.

Hoeffel is an idiot. Not saying Specter is anything but electing Hoeffel is electing an empty chair. Remember what counts in the senate

What counts ? SENIORITY ! I would rather have a junior lowlife than a senior lowlife heading the judiciary committee !

I have been out of Philly for a while. However, I have a lot of relatives that despise Arlen and the things that he has done. They like what Toomey has to say. So maybe there is hope yet.

Specter is the Republican most responsible for blocking Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court.

I also will not forget his voting for the Clinton Gun Ban

Ma'am, you're preaching to the choir! : )

I just posted that Specter probably won't live until 2010 and thus Rendell will select his replacement (unless Pat Toomey runs for Governor and defeats Rendell in 2006, which could be tough, since Rendell's approval rating has increased and since PA traditionally throws out the Governor's party every 8 years, not every 4). And as for Pat Toomey being a gazillion times better than Specter, you should read the primary election threads from earlier this year---I was one of Toomey's biggest backers. And the worst part is that had the Democrats nominated a strong candidate instead of Hoeffel, or had Hoeffel run a stronger campaign, Pat Toomey would have been our only chance of holding the seat, since Specter does not motivate conservative voters and normally does not do well with blue-collar Democrats from outside Philly.

I was on those same threads!!! I found Pat to be bright and personable and a true conservative. I heard Santorum on with Mike Pintek today...and by golly, Ricky has to turn himself into a pretzel to toe the party line to support this 'senior Senator from Pennsylvania.'

Have you seen the Michael J. Fox 'stem cells for Spector' ads? Or my personal favorite...the sKerry/Spector signage? And the best...he won't return the favors granted him (I have posted it before, but if Bush would have totally stayed clear of Arlen, we might have Toomey instead today)...the Scottish Law expert has publicly stated that he won't vote for conservative judges...you know the ones that Bush nominates!?! I think I would rather have Hoeffel (or a Rendell crony)...

Putting on my asbestos...and waiting for the flames...

"I have never understood why W supported him."

Because it was the only way W could win in PA.

"This can easily be avoided by giving Specter a different Charimanship."
No, not if Specter wants to keep it. His support from Rendell, the unions, and Kerry comes from the fact that he will be Chairman of the Judiciary Committee so he can block all those "extremists" that Bush nominates. He will NOT sell out his fellow travelers, the Democrats because he owes them for his entire pathetic Rino career.

Rendell the Unions and whoever else are supporting him have no bearing on who the GOP leadership places as chairman of the SJC. It is generally done by leadership but it does not have to be. However, actually doing so would require the GOP leadership to grow a pair something they are unlikely to do.

The people of Pennsylvania are about the learn the hard way the saying, "You may not always get the government you want but you alawys get the government you deserve.

Individual after individual on this forum warned about voting for Spectre.

Their warnings went unheeded. Now the price is to be paid.

Specter has more than enough seniority to KEEP the chairmanship unless he chooses to give it up. Nobody in the Republican leadership is going to lean on him enough to switch for some other chairmanship. THE REASON: Arlen is the CHOSEN (by the Democrats) alternative to Leahy (I think that's who would chair if the Dems take over.) Either way the Democrats control the Judiciary committee and who will get a hearing, a floor vote, etc. Specter is in bed with Rendell, the unions and the Democrats and he has been for years. NO WAY if the Republicans control the senate that Arlen will not be Judiciary chairman because he is OWNED by the Democrats.

You don't know Arlen too well

First, I'm in Michigan so even a 1/2 of a Republican Senator would seem like a great thing. But you are right, I don't know Arlen that well. I do know the President though, so let's see what happens if Arlen crosses him.

As I said it would require the Republicans to grow some balls to keep Spector from being Chairman of the SJC. It could be done no matter what the democrats say or how much seniority Spector has. If he doesn't like it he can always cross the aisle. After this election we will have plenty of extra Republican Senators.

We hope the good folks in PA will take Spector out this time. I think the pubbies will pick up a couple of seats and his loss would be beneficial to the party if he is going to be another "jumping jim" jeffords type and block his party's nominees.

IF the Republicans gain enough seats to just tell Arlen to take what they are offering or take a hike, he will most likely take that hike right across the aisle and still end up chairing the Judiciary. Arlen holds all the cards in this hand and the only way he isn't going to be chairman is if he wants to swap it for something else and I don't for a minute think he will do that because he is a fellow traveler and true believer. He does everything he can to screw up the courts and rid us of our constitution. He may be not so bad on some other items, but if it's the UN or the courts and the constitution, Arlen is as bad as any Democrat and as damaging to the country.

If Snarlin Arlen switched sides he could be in the Senate for a thousand years and not be the chairman of a dung heap. When the Republican have enough seats to tell him to take a hike they should tell him to take a hike. Give him the out of heading another committee but otherwise assure him the door is open to his leaving. This is only wishful thinking on my part unfortunately because Republicans are remarkably weak when it come to doing anything that will bolster conservatism.

Yep, let's see, since the President came to PA right before the primary and stumped for Arlen on the same day that Toomey was having his big rally. He wrapped up the win for Arlen. Politics makes strange bedfellows. Don't worry, I'm working for Bush. But if he looses PA he did it to himself. A lot of people here are still upset at him.

"Because it was the only way W could win in PA."

Well, that was the official party line, but the exact opposite is true. It will damn near take a miracle for Bush to win PA and Specter is not helping him at all. He gets booed at all of his appearances with Bush when he does show up.

Had Toomey run, PA would have been a definite in the Bush WIN column.
