After spending a highly visible lifetime in a relatively small city where information -- particularly about media and politics -- is the coin of the realm, Brit Hume may be one of the best-known people in Washington.
The basics: He's the managing editor and chief Washington correspondent for the Fox News Channel and has long been a rabble-rouser in a trade where one rarely earns popularity points for rousing the rabble. As a young reporter he drew the wrath of Richard M. Nixon and had the distinction of being shadowed by the CIA for several months. The spooks' code name for Hume was "Eggnog," in wry tribute to his youth and his light blond hair.

Kerry and Hume pals? In what universe? For those readers gobsmacked by that information, consider that the future presidential candidate and TV news power broker were only about 4 feet tall and shared a passion for cartoons instead of politics. They met in kindergarten and hung together through fifth grade.

Hume learned he had the soul of a muckraker -- journalism's fond name for those hardy investigative types who stir up the muck to expose misconduct -- and would later land a job with one of its masters, Jack Anderson.
With the aid of assistants, Anderson wrote a widely syndicated column called Washington Merry-Go-Round. But Hume, who joined his staff in 1970, quickly became the star pupil by making one of the column's most sensational scoops when he got hold of a memo that proved International Telephone & Telegraph Corp. had contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund the 1972 GOP convention in return for which the Nixon administration dropped an antitrust investigation against the company.

I cannot believe he is 61. I figured he was 45 or so. He has been around a long time but that is what shocked me in the article.
Brit's a good man, I wonder how he stomached ABC all those years.

This is a telling statement by Brit:
"Sometime in the early '80s, I began to look at things differently." He began to observe the national media's coverage of Ronald Reagan, he says, "and I began to think, 'Oh my God. We have a problem here.'"
While there have been many articulate people addressing bias in the media for years, Brit has to be one of the most respected. He consistently exhibits class and true journalistic curiousity. Fox achieved legitimacy in my mind when they hired him.

Brit is the smartest, sexiest man in television news. Or, using one of my kids' expressions (correctly, I hope!), he's ''da bomb''.

Brit is one of the very few who actualy get it RIGHT!!! LOVE BRIT!
He said on air recently (discussing flu shot) that he was 61, and I was pretty shocked too. I really enjoy him on that Fox roundtable show.... to paraphrase another poster, when he looks over those eyeglasses, you know he means business and someone's about to get put in his/her place! I like it best when it's Juan Williams....
Agreed. I love it when he give Juan a good smackdown.

Rabble reporting for duty, Brit!
Brit is no dope, which makes it all the more surprising that it took him until sometime in the '80's to realize "Oh my God. We have a problem here." But journalism schools brainwash even the best and brightest for a time, I suppos.

LOL! All the more credit to Brit's "Fair and Balanced" appraisal of Kerry.
Brit is my favorite of the Fox fellows.

"Special Report with Brit Hume" is the best news show on TV!
If it wasn't for Hume's show I wouldn't be watching Fox to the extent I do. I can't stand the cable shows where everyone is trying to shout down the other person, or the shows where the panel is weighted heavily in one direction. I just know that one of these days Brit is going to convert Juan Williams. ;^)
