Chinese Muslims Held at Gitmo to Be Freed
Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Defense officials have authorized the release of a majority of the 22 Chinese Muslims being held at the Guantanamo Bay naval base, the State Department said Thursday.
Spokesman Richard Boucher said the Bush administration is seeking to relocate the Uighurs, from northwest China, in a third country because they do not wish to resettle in China.
Boucher said it was unclear if they would be eligible for asylum in the United States.
The State Department has contacted a number of countries, mostly European, about possible resettlement of the Uighurs. One country, which an official refused to identify, has indicated an interest.
Amnesty International has said the Uighurs should not be returned to China because they could face torture and possible execution.
Boucher said the administration is "certainly not in a position to say that they wouldn't be tortured or persecuted" if they are returned to China.
Some Uighurs support independence from China for their home province of Xinjiang. China says the independence fighters represent an Islamic movement linked to al-Qaida.

BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said here Friday that China hopes the United States will handle issue involving terror suspects of Chinese nationality in Guantanamo with prudence and in a responsible and appropriate way.
The remark came in response to a US State Department saying that the United States is trying to get a third country to accept the Chinese terror suspects being held in Guantanamo.
Zhang said that terrorism is a common foe of humanity and poses serious danger to world peace and regional security.
Abdullah Mehsud, a former Guantanamo prisoner, masterminded the kidnapping of two Chinese engineers in Pakistan, causing great concern of the international community, she said.
Given that East Turkistan terrorist forces pose a great threat to the security and people's lives in many countries, Zhang urged the United States to handle the issue prudently, without hurting Sino-US ties and anti-terrorism collaboration around the world. Enditem
Unclear????????????????????????????????????????
We're even thinking of admitting them to the USA as citizens?
What a great way for muslim terrorists to destroy their target from the inside.
Let China have them. These terrorist scum should never set foot on America.
Loo - its a no brainer - they were arrested in Afghanistan fighting along side the Taliban. They may not be al-Qaeda but they were Taliban so why does that mean America has to grant them asylum? Meanwhile that retard kid from California who converted and joined the Taliban is doing hard years??? Something is rotten here.
SEND THEM BACK TO CHINA! NOW!!
Send them back to China. Let it be a lesson for any future terrorists from China.
RED FLAG: The State Dept UNCERTAIN if Al'Qaeda detanees are ELIGABLE for ASYLUM in the USA ? ? ? ? ?
I hope Bush is CERTAIN that they WILL NOT! How many Iraqis did we resettle in the US after Desert Storm, and how many were spies, and how many helped Timothy McVeigh destroy the OK City Federal Bldg? Please God, can common sense triumph over bureacratic posturing?
Contact the State Dept and assure them WE DON'T WANT TERRORISTS HERE!
China is at war with the Muslims in Western China. You don't hear about it. China has got their own problems with Muslims and it can be real messy.

Hmmm, yes I think a "Slow boat to China" would be in order!
"Zhang said that terrorism is a common foe of humanity and poses serious danger to world peace and regional security."
Oh please, Red China opposed to terrorism. They terrorize their own citizens each and every day.
and the State Dept. seems to be considering granting these terrorists asylum.
