Please do NOT bother posting bogus Kerry-skewing exit numbers.
Common sense ^ | Now! | Me!

Posted on 11/02/2004 12:03:04 PM PST by dangus

There is a bogus batch of exit polling numbers, supposedly released by what used to be the VNS, showing Kerry winning several key states. Don't feel bad about being suckered. They fooled Drudge and aparrently K-LO at National Review. But they are absurd on the face. Republican sources say Pennsylvania is tied, these reports say Dems are leading by TWENTY points. They even list Michigan twice.

Two notes:
* I'm inferring they are what K-Lo saw, because they match what she says. But she did not list all the states, including the Pennsylvania results.
* Initially, they listed "MI" twice, with two different sets of numbers. The last batch I saw lists "Mich" and "MI."

They listed Wisconsin twice as well, with two different margins. I agree they are probably bogus. Who knows where these numbers could have come from. We have to keep in mind that the Internet is a great source of unfounded rumors.

You're right. I posted what Drudge had up and 2 seconds later when I looked again they were gone. I agree, let's wait to hear confirmation form the Bush camp. This is getting ridiculous.

I thought ONLY AP was doing the polls.

How about the fact that the source of the poll was reported to be VNS, yet VNS was dissolved after the 2000 election and no longer exists.

I don't even think they can legally release numbers until the polls close. This whole exit polling should be outlawed. It has changed the results of elections, I'm certain.

People...remember in 2000? About this time of day, Drudge ran headlines screaming that Gore was President based on the exit polls.

1. These exits don't yet count GOP voters who actually have a job and vote after work tonight. The union people get the day off in some instances.

2. Dan Rather and his exit pollers are doing this at place like Precinct 12 in Philadelphia, PA. They aren't doing this at a zillion rural towns which are going 80% Bush and will have record turnout.

Everyone calm down....if anything, all this means is the race is tight, and GW won't win big.....but we all knew that beforehand.

Thanks for putting up this thread. Drudge has pulled the numbers off his site, although he still has that absurd headline about early exit polls giving Kerry comfort.

This is for folks who saw the numbers, but didn't catch some of the major flaws:

There were two different sets of numbers each for Michigan and Wisconsin. In addition the Florida numbers were identical to one set of the Michigan numbers.

It was a malicious hoax, plain and simple.

Personally, I think the bit about women being overpolled is a fig leaf to hide the fact that Drudge (and NRO) ran with hoax numbers. No reputable polling organization is going to skew that badly in favor of women, especially when men historically have tended to vote in greater numbers that women.

59- 41 women to men ratio. Can someone much smarter than me do the math. If we believe the one to four point lead for Kerry, knowing Bush's lead with men and almost even with women. It's that really good for Bush?

But we were way ahead in the exit polls of advanced voting. There might actually be a pro-Kerry bias among the early-birds at the polls today in states where there is advance voting, leaving W up anyway in votes cast so far.
