Lansing, MI - Following a criminal complaint filed in Waterford on Monday alleging the Waterford Township Clerk harassed a woman hoping to vote an absentee ballot for President Bush, the Michigan Republican Party called on Waterford Police and Oakland County prosecutors to set a precedent of fully enforcing election laws by fully prosecuting this type of voter intimidation.
"This type of felonious intimidation is unconscionable," said Executive Director Greg McNeilly. "Unfortunately, this behavior is consistent with the message of hate and anger coming from the very top of the Kerry campaign. John Kerry himself constantly belittles those who don't endorse his radical liberal views."
The complaint was sworn out to Waterford Township Police by a woman who entered the Township Hall to obtain and vote an absentee ballot. After accidentally voting straight ticket Republican, instead of candidate by candidate, she returned to the clerk to ask for another ballot. The clerk menacingly pointed her finger and responded by telling the voter, "You should be ashamed of yourself voting Republican."
"Once again Democrats are the party of disenfranchisement," McNeilly continued. "Maybe the Democrats' cadres of lawyers will help this Waterford voter, but once again I am sure their civic responsibility will be only self serving."
The intimidation committed is a violation of Michigan Common Law 168 Section 932 (a) A person shall not attempt, by means of bribery, menace, or other corrupt means or device, either directly or indirectly, to influence an elector in giving his or her vote, or to deter the elector from, or interrupt the elector in giving his or her vote at any election held in this state; (d) A person shall neither disclose to any other person the name of any candidate voted for by any elector, the contents of whose ballots were seen by the person, nor in any manner obstruct or attempt to obstruct any elector in the exercise of his or her duties as an elector under this act; and (h) A person present while an absent voter is voting an absent voter ballot shall not suggest or in any manner attempt to influence the absent voter on how he or she should vote.
All three violations are felonies.
I live in Cambridge, Mass--belly of the beast--the "activists" around here are not happy from what i can gather.
Local TV in the Grand Rapids MI area is investigating reports of intimidation by MoveOn. Not much was said about the complaints-probably more of the same stuff we have heard about all day long.

Reason #4 why I carry concealed.

Ask to speak with an attorney at the Voting Rights Division, and explain that you have specific information.
Also, you may contact the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov/
Of course, it helps to have a camera to catch them in action.
Roger that. Me 2.
But, I keep hearing the Republicans are the ones who are intimidating everyone. The 'rats wouldn't lie about that would they?
A Democratic operative thanked me for voting once and I thanked him for not messing his pants. I still don't think he understood what I meant. This happened in 1978.
Unfortunately down here in TX you aren't allowed to carry to a polling place, plus the closet poll location is a high school. So double bad juju for me :(
I did have my Sig in my car though, parking lots and driveways don't count as part of school property.
One of many possible responses: Say: "Okay then, I guess I 'll have to vote for all Republicans then" and walk back and slide the straight ticket Republican ballot into the machine. Problem solved.
