Bush signed concealed carry legislation as TX governor. The topic never came up in NY, but I'm utterly certain that if it had, Rudy would have been a featured witness in Albany testifying against it. Bush allowed (and probably encouraged, behind the scenes) the AWB to expire 2 months ago. Rudy would undoubtedly have taken Kerry's advice and pushed the Congress to pass a replacement. There is a qualitative difference between these 2 men on this issue. Bush may not be a "gun nut" (that title I reserve for Cheney, who reportedly owns hundreds of machine guns), but given the alternatives to him in the last 2 general elections, Bush was the only choice for those who are pro-gun. Even in the 2000 primary, Bush's main opposition was John McCain, a notorious statist on the issue of guns (and, as we've all found out, on free speech as well). Rudy, OTOH, will first have to face a field of Republicans in 2008 (IF he decides to run, and there's no guarantee of that), most of whom will have done more than just "toe the line" at a politically convenient time, a line that he has never toed before (like Kerry on this and many other issues).
Rudy has strong points in his favor vs. many other Republicans - but the gun issue isn't on of them. Given the importance of that issue down south and in many parts of the west, I think that it is a significant roadblock to him winning the nomination.
Rudy is a cross-dressing, gun grabbing guido who is the most OVERRATED POLITICIAN IN AMERICA, along with Barack Obama.
