Fresno, Kern, San Bernadino & Riverside are California's fastest growing counties. The population growth is not from illegals, but rather, middle-class home owners. Add these counties to strong pro-freedom counties like Orange & San Diego, and California could be a red state within 4 years.

When this happens, the Bay Area will feel within Calif like NYC feels within the country.

It would be nice, not sure if it will swing in just four years.

Don't forget the growth in the Central Valley and Northern California which are also very conservative, Kern, Tulare, Merced, Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado are all counties showing substantial growth and vote Republican.

that would be nice, but you might want to review the same stats for the last 6 presidental elections.

It is true that the central valley is growing, however IIRC LA county is "growing" faster.

That would be nice but I think it will take a lot longer than that.
We live in Sonoma County. I finally felt free again this morning as I was driving my son to preschool. Almost all the Kerry yard signs were gone. It was nice not to be assaulted by the fact that I feel totally out of place here.
Then I got smacked back down to reality when I passed a car plastered with bumperstickers that said, "Impeach Bush", "Not in my name!", "No war on Iraq", "A village in Texas is missing an idiot" blah, blah, blah.
Oh well, I could always move.

Whatever population growth the city of LA is getting is from in-filling; all the new county growth is in Santa Clarita out to the Kern/Ventura borders - pure middle-class.

If you want to see even larger tracts of land being groomed for 5,000+ housing developments are far as the eye can see, take a drive out the 91, come back on the 10, head up thru aforementioned Valencia on the 5 and take a drive up the 99.

These zones represent California's political future.

As the Hispanics buy homes, open their own businesses, raise their children and become active in their churches, they become very conservative. It will become very interesting to see what % of the Hispanics voted for GW.

Given that a substantial portion of the Republican base wants much tougher immigration laws, this could be dicey. Bush lost California by a million votes; that's a huge margin to try to overcome unless 1) Bush takes leadership on immigration in a way that pleases Hispanics without alienating his anti-illegal immigration base, or 2) he avoids the immigration issue and the Democrats continue to alienate Hispanics by moving further leftward in the culture wars. The first is like acheiving peace in the Middle East, and the second may not be a given if the Dims do any serious soul-searching. Short answer: I don't see California going Red any time soon unless a popular Republican from California is on the Republican ticket.

Growing up in the San Joaquin valley and currently residing in Merced county, it is plain to me that we get a bad rap due to the liberal Bay Area and LaLa Land. If you go to Hannity's site he has a map that includes every county in the country in red and (very little) blue. It is quite impressive and shows CA to be mostly conservative with the exceptions of the aforementioned liberal areas.

Another reason why Calif could go red in 2008 is that a lot of the recent voting was driven more by anti-Bush sentiments rather than anti-R feelings. If the Repubs nominated someone like Guilianni or McCain, Calif would definitely be in play.

10.2% is the margin that sum of all the leftist presidential candidates had over the sum of all the "right" presidential candidates for 2004.

13.9% is the margin that sum of all the leftist presidential candidates had over the sum of all the "right" presidential candidates for 2000.

So the margin is shrinking

I hope you're right, but I doubt it. Bush still underperformed with whites, and still got clobbered by Hispanics.

Hispanics in Calif seem like those in Illinois and NY; i.e. they are liberal in party preference.

It used to be that San bernardino, Riverside, and Orange counties pluralities for Republicans could balanced out Los Angeles County for the Democrats, but not suite anymore.

The Central Valley counties continue to be a bastion of Republican strength, but similarly do not counterbalance the Bay area. Somehow the Republican have to learn how to win back the business-oriented south Bay area (Silicon Valley) and cut into Democratic margins in Los Angeles County.

I'd like the answer, too, even if the majority of voters went for Bush. 144 % turnout even for a "preliminary" count needs to be explained. Almost 30,000 votes counted suddenly gone by morning needs to be explained.

I haven't heard from the Sec of State yet, nor the local newspaper - http://www.theunion.com/.

I don't think there is a chance California will go red in the next 4 years unless San Francisco and Los Angeles Counties fall into the Pacific. That said I think the only demographic that will hurt the GOP is the latino's. According to Barone when you get away from the coastal areas they are not so Democratic. They actually usually vote Republican and they are now at 48% of the population and unlike the coastal areas are growing. Also the Republican's have a higher fertility rate then the Dem's, who are probably just buggering each other.

Uh, no.

California is already decidedly liberal, and the next four years will only bring more minorities to the state. And in case you didn't know, minorities tend to vote Democrat.

You can break down by county all you want... the demographics show that the notion of California becoming a 'red state' is a silly one.

Looking at the blue/red county map it already is (and always has been) a red state.

California didn't become a liberal state untill the liberals migrated here from the east coast for the weather, good paying jobs and taxpayer funded higher education at California colleges and universities.

The county I live in and the surrounding counties all voted for Bush with 55%, 56% and 57% margins.

Quite a bit of that new support came from devout catholics. Hispanics naturally vote Democrat, but they are not yet hardened in that support. They can become a swing constituency, and culteral conservatism is an area in which gains can be made into receiving their vote on a more permanent basis.

I'm actually quite pleased with the results in Cali, and other states. We're making inroads in blue states. Not enough to yet overtake the few cities that dominate the vote, and maybe not enough time to catch up by 2004, but It's conceivable CA could become a swing state if we maintain and continue to improve on that growth in future.

True, true - as are many of the posts in this thread. But consider three facts:

One, the State Republican party is run by an inept bunch of losers. Clean that house out and you can only get better.

Two, the liberal stranglehold on our educational institutions has been held by a bunch of aging flower children. And over the last twenty years they have lost, on a national basis, again and again. They are tiring and retiring. Their grip is ever-so-slowly loosening.

Three, the California media, top to bottom is the most liberal of anywhere in the country - they also are starting to fade and are steadily being replaced by the new media.

Be of stout heart. Things can change. Who, in 1996, would have thunk that in 2004................... ?

However, it's gonna take a LOT of growth to surpass the 90/10 Dem voting of San Francisco and LA.

But look at who and what liberals are....they're pro-abortion, and if they don't abort they have few or no children. Liberals are also more likely to be dopers and AIDS carriers who will die prematurely.

San Francisco County = San Francisco City. There is no hope for those folks. Fortunately, their population has been decreasing.

That is a natural by-product of the sexual habits of the primary subspecies that is resident in the area.

Fastest growing counties is only relative. It's hard to grow fast when you're already huge, but relatively easy when you have a low population.

I have no doubt that Hillary could easily carry California in 2008.
