You are right, it's a big problem when four million (plus a few) people voted for Bush in this state and Bush didn't get one single Electoral College vote. Talk about disenfranchised! We who live in the conservative part of California feel like our vote doesn't count.
What needs to be done is either break California into two states (East California and West California) or to give out the Electoral Votes proportionally, according to how the state is split percentage wise. I'm not holding my breath though.
Proportional distribution of the electoral vote would favor the left and severely dilute the need for even having states, sorta like going all popular vote only.
