I find it hard to believe that any thinking person has taken seriously any comment Cronkite has made since about 1956.
the real joke was that larryking didn't question him about it (or so i heard)
Walter had John Kerry do a poll for him to see how to respond to Red America's fury over Walter's idiotic babble.
Kerry's pollsters came up with the idea of saying it was a joke. Walter bought it. So, they went with that.
Larry King sure didn't laugh at Uncle Walter's "joke", but then again he didn't even question it, he just nodded and moved right on.
Ten years ago, some wag put together a web site called "Walter Cronkite Spit in my Food!", which described an obviously fictional account of a drunken Cronkite swinging from lampposts and assaulting restaurant patrons. Cronkite sued and got the site taken down, ostensibly because people would not understand it was a joke, and would accept the word of an anonymous website--and ignore its disclaimers--rather than trust "the most trusted man in America".
Now that "most trusted man" defames Karl Rove, not by saying that Rove spit into someone's food, but that he conspired with the worst enemy of the United States. And this is supposed to be acceptable, because everyone will automatically take the "most trusted man's" word with a grain of salt, and see that it's a joke!
The hypocritical old bastard.
It ain't for nothing that Cronkite--Krankheit--means "sickness" in German.
Another old fool that needs to be carted off to the old fools home.
They dig up Uncle Walter from the grave every four years around election time and then he goes back to the grave and sleeps for another four years. Most people think he's already dead anyway (and they're not that far off). Say goodbye Walter.
Stupid is as stupid does.
I wonder which was the Alzheimer induced comment, this one or the last one.
Cronkite was never much of a jokester in his career. Being taken seriously was pretty much his stock in trade.
I saw the video of Cronkite saying that. He is lying now. Either he is lying or his sense of timing is off. No, he is lying through his teeth.
Funny, apology did not come until after the election. It is like shoplifting, when they catch you outside the store, you then say, I will pay for it now, just let me go.
to quote mr. daschle, "appologize mr. cronkite, appologize!"
Sure it was a joke Walter. You have lost the great respect American's once had for you.
I hear Arafat's in a semi-private room. Maybe we could send Cronkite over to fill the other bed. Walter could tell Arafat some more jokes - he needs cheering up.
