NEW YORK One day after winning re-election, President George W. Bush held a rare press conference. With the campaign pressure off, and with neither "side" having to worry about an embarrassing flub, the president and the press pack enjoyed a little bantering.
"I want to thank you all for your hard work in the campaign," Bush informed the reporters. "I told you that the other day and you probably thought I was just seeking votes." This provoked general laughter.
"But now that you voted...I really meant it. I appreciate the hard work of the press corps. We all put in long hours and you were away from your families for a long period of time. But the country's better off when we have a vigorous and free press covering our elections, and thanks for your work.
"With that overt pandering, I'll answer a few questions."
The first query, related to Iraq, was in the usual three parts.
"Now that I've got the will of the people at my back, I'm going to start enforcing the one-question rule," Bush responded. "That was three questions." More laughter.

I would be pleased to pay 12% like TaRAYza.
It was a great press conference. The President made it clear who's boss and he gave 'um the grief they've earned.
It was truly Capital!
I loved what he said about not coming there just to occupy the office.
What a great man.
Indeed it as. The only flaw was of Arafat: "God bless his soul".
One typically says of murderers "May God have mercy on his soul".
Hopefully the Presdident will correct this when Arafat actually dies (although I think he is really dead, and they are doing a "Weekend at Bernie's" until they know where all his money is)
Yes he did! And I was never prouder of him than I was today - he started off sounding rather subdued and tired, but you could see his energy and enthusiasm building minute by minute. He put them in their place and did it with a smile ;o)
He certainly is one cocky son of a gun, and he has reason to be. After all that time the press trying to tear him down, even over little things, and he's pulled it off once again. I don't blame the MSM for being critical of government, hell, I'm critical of it too! But the systematic targeting of Bush even on little things to hurt him is just ridiculous.
I'm sure the President is going to simply laugh every time he goes out to face the press corps over the next four years. Expect many more conferences just for the hell of it.
I tend to agree with you, I think he will give more press conferences too. Just for the hell of it, like you say.
He has been through so much and he is standing ever taller.
He beat hell out of the press, and they know it.
Well hell's bells. This article didn't mention how he told that reporter from a Texas paper that he "could see it in his beady little eyes!"
I heard that one on the radio today. Sure glad I wasn't drinking milk at the time. I can't figure out how to get that sour milk smell out of my sinuses when I do that.
