New Arizona law sends fear through immigrant community
AP ^ | 11/5/4

PHOENIX -- Immigrant parents have been flooding community leaders with calls and pulling their children out of Head Start this week after Arizona voters approved a ballot measure aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration, Hispanic officials said.

Proposition 200 requires proof of citizenship when seeking some public benefits or when registering to vote. Government employees are required to report suspected illegal immigrants seeking public benefits or else face jail time and fines.

Latino leaders sought to offer assurances Friday to parents wondering if they should keep their children in school or avoid going out.

"This proposition is still not law," said Janet Murguia, executive director and chief operating officer of the National Council of La Raza.

Can anyone really have a problem with this? Has the word illegal lost its true meaning?

"keep their children in school or avoid going out" - no, just go back to your homes - in Mexico. And. Don't. Come. Back. Ever.

What a concept.....expecting end users of a product to pay for it (or at least some of it). What will they think of next?

This proposition is not yet law -- get out of the country before you are busted, and come in the front door next time like everyone else had to do.

If this works well, I can imagine it happening everywhere eventually.

This is a great law. It needs to be fully enforced - even sending the offenders back to Mexico and elsewhere - but with a reasonable hand.

My husband is a naturalized citizen. He came to the states from Canada, his uncle in the East Coast sponsored him, theuncle had to sign a contract that if my husband got into any trouble theuncle would be responsible. He would be respponsible for two years. My husband had to sign a conatract saying he would NOT seek any aid of any kind except emergency medical, also he had to show that he would be self supporting. He worked around for a bit, then joined the AirForce (Korean conflict) and upon discharge became a citizen.
Why can't we continue these very valid rules today???

I am afraid that the president will continue with his amnesty program....(just thought I would throw that in)

If this law is so racist, why is it the exact same thing that Mexico requires?

They do have these rules - if you come in legally.

I have a daughter-in-law who has been through the immigration hoops for over three years and just got her permanent status. The requirements and bureaucracy are simply staggering. It includes a sponsor and all the rest of the above.

It is just the illegal immigrants sneaking into this country who are skating away scot free with it. The law-abiding immigrants are put through the wringer, if they can even get admitted.

This is a great new law in Arizona!

You are sadly correct. The trend all over the country is for frustrated citizens to work hard to pass laws like this one that would actually make a difference only to have a few liberal judges strike them down. It will be miraculous if this stands.

Californians viewing this thread can help institute a similar law by downloading petitions here. It is a pdf file. If your prefer, go to this page and request petitions via postal service.

It's easy to get a few signatures, people willingly listen to the briefest explanation and then say, "Where do I sign?" They want to sign.

Exactly, and let me add "La Raza."

This is a fabulous law.
I know it was well reasearched and
scrutinized for legalities, but an
appointed for life, Federal judge
can strike it down at will.

Phoenix-area Head Start leaders said attendance dropped dramatically Wednesday as worried parents kept their children home from the federally funded preschool program. In one classroom, only two children showed up instead of the usual 20.

Rachael Schultz, spokeswoman for Maricopa County Human Services, which oversees Head Start centers, said Spanish-speaking teachers and staff members called parents to assure them their children are safe at school, and by Thursday, attendance returned to normal. Citizenship is not a requirement to be in the program.

In fact, statistically speaking, it seems like citizens don't need Head Start. Would they still be running the program for what, at least according to this article, appears to be 90% less interest?

It will be a mite tougher than that. Severability is written into it. On the off chance a judge rules against a particular clause, the rest survive.

Post election research indicates about 47% of Hispanic Arizona voters actually voted for Prop 200. The La Raza and Mechista bunch are really grousing about that -- traitors, Tio Tacos, the usual slurs. That's somewhat lower than other big demographic groups, but support even crossed party lines.

Yes. We were inundated with anti-prop 200 ads here. They were desperate to stop it. I won't be surprised if there's a court challenge.

Yeah, it's a really well written law.
It should stand judicial scruntiny,
but nothing can stop a Federal judge
if he/she so desires. They strike
it down part by part, and then what?

I love the fact that so many Latinos voted for it!
That alone must have the "destroy America by invasion
groups" madder than hell.

Head Start???? Didn't our leaders make the claim that these people were only coming here by the millions to work hard and have a better life? Wouldn't using welfare programs contradict that?

That really shouldn't have surprised anyone --- they obviously weren't paying attention to why Silvestre Reyes got elected to Congress --- hispanics saw him as willing to stand up to the Mexican government even after it condemned him for Operation Blockade and Operation Hold-the-Line --- the border residents want border control and a little sense of safety.

Really though -- cutting them off the welfare and other handouts will accomplish a lot ---- but there also needs to be a big crack down on those employing illegals to get around minimum wage and other laws. The illegal employers need to be slapped with some big fines for failing to provide Workman's Comp, legal wages and the rest.

President Bush needs to get right with this issue. That's a fact. I'm sorry the truth hurts. His advisors are not serving him well, and I hope that's some of the people he would like to get rid of. I believe he will do the right thing if he figures out what is happening because of this invasion. He lives in a bubble, and it's up to the rest of us to penetrate that bubble, before this nightmare becomes his legacy. I don't want that to happen to this president. Do you?
